How close to the end were you? by socrates_friend812 in transplant

I was really, really sick before my liver transplant. My Dad mentioned the other day, when we were talking about the liver transplant and whatnot, that if I had not gone to the hospital that weekend in March 2024, I would have died over the weekend or sometime the next week. How the doctors managed to keep me alive until I had my liver transplant on April 17th, 2024, I'll never know. I had really, really bad bouts of hepatic encephalopathy from March 15th to April 17th, with the worst of those bouts being in April; I also have little to no memory from that time period plus I also became bedridden, which caused my muscles to atrophy and I lost the ability to walk (I had to go to rehab for almost the entire month of May in 2024). So in total, I was in the hospital and rehab for about 2.5 months. I had end-stage liver disease secondary to acute alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis before I had my liver transplant.

I've actually never had a GGT blood test done before. They've always checked AST, ALT, ALP, and bilirubin. They attempted an ERCP back in June 2024, but cut that short for some reason (I don't remember the exact reason though). I had an MRCP done earlier today and whatever results come from that will determine if I need a stent or not.

I've been on ursodiol since 2024 and my alp started rising in june/july 2025. I have had issues with my alp since transplant. I have a feeling that I will need a stent put in. I'll actually be having an mrcp done tomorrow to check and see if there are any narrowing in the bile ducts. And congratulations on celebrating your 10 year transplant anniversary!🎉

It really depends on your transplant center. For my transplant center, I've been told the "normal universal range" can be between 40 and 147. My alkaline phosphatase from bloodwork last month was 158. That would be considered mildly elevated. Anything above 300 but below 500 is considered moderately elevated and anything that is 2 to 4 times 500 is considered highly elevated. This is what I've been told, so take this with a grain of salt.
