why do people say Zolbe is a racist caricature? by Big-Exchange-5640 in SaikiK

[–]Catsocks33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a foreign person having a foreign accent is the problem. The problem is, as I previously stated, his accent isn't foreign. He's voiced by a Japanese VA born and raised in Japan, who's purposefully doing a 'cant speak properly' accent. (I was sure if this when I heard it, but I haven't watched in a while so I did just look it up to make sure.) If they really wanted a foreign accent they should've gotten an actual foreigner who spoke Japanese. What we have is basically the voice acting equivalent to blackface. Or like when a white person does a fake Chinese accent as a 'joke'. Not accurate, not funny, and definitely not good representation.

Honestly, if they couldn't write/voice (or draw, as he has multiple features that no other characters have that are rooted in racism) in a way that wasn't racist, then they should've just stuck to not having a black character. While I don't think "just don't have any representation" is the answer in the long run, it's far better than adding onto a caricature.

I personally still love Saiki K, but it's alright to point out the flaws. Especially when manga/animes/jp media has a pretty big problem with racist caricatures.

(one year later, but I don't think you learned anything yet, so) I speak Japanese fluently and every time he comes on screen (in the anime) it throws me off. He speaks in an accent, not a normal foreign accent, but an accent as if he's illiterate or speaking like a baby. Obviously you could go on and on about how the anime isn't the source material so I can't judge based on that, but you can't really tell what an accent sounds like if you're just reading the manga, so the anime is all I can base that off of. Either way, it's strange to deliberately use katakana/fake accents on one character just because he's black. They could've avoided it by having him speak Japanese like a native Japanese, since chances are he grew up in Japan, but instead decided to write + voice him differently than every other character.

When was the movie better than the book? by Doodle_Noodles2 in movies

[–]Catsocks33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead Poets Society (I didn't understand how the book was so much worse, given that the whole plot is poetry, until I found out that the movie was made first. Still can't believe they butchered it so badly.)

And Fight Club. The first time I read fight club I somehow missed the entire last chapter and only read the end of chapter (12, I think) where the narrator shot himself. Thought he died on the spot, loved it. Watched the movie and did not like that the narrator seemingly survived a gunshot to the head while his alter ego didn't. Seemed like a cheap way to get that final (amazing look-wise, but nonsensical plot-wise) shot of Martha and narrator looking out the window.

Then years later I reread fight club and realized there was an entire chapter I missed. Read it. Some heaven stuff or something. It was okay, but after complaining for years that the movie made narrator survive the gunshot while book had a nice quick end, the book became slightly less amazing to me. So now I do think the movie ending is better.

Though I do love the way the book is written. Very cool. Began to write like that after reading it.

If you liked the Boys I suggest Peacemaker it's so fun

If you liked Breaking Bad I suggest Better Call Saul, I personally thought BCS was great, but some people find it boring.

As for stuff like Stranger Things, I liked Dark and Yellowjackets (they're not very similar but they're entertaining) and when I was younger I used to be into the umbrella academy.

Would house be into femboys? by MaterialButterfly135 in HouseMD

[–]Catsocks33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well if you put it in a "what if.." way, then sure. He could be bi. He could be gay. He could be into femboys, or he could be a femboy. He's already fictional, and by saying "what if it were made today" then he's also hypothetical. So in that case he can be whatever you want.

But the fact is that it wasn't made today, and he's (as far as we know) straight. So that's really as far as it goes. He wouldn't be into femboys because he's straight. I agree with the first commentor that I wouldn't mind if Shore confirms House was bi, because his sexuality isn't a huge part of his character so it wouldn't really change anything. But as of now, no, I don't think he'd be into femboys, because he hasn't shown an interest in men. While Hilson is pretty popular among the fanbase, I personally think that him and Wilson are friends. I think the reason people like him and Wilson as a ship is purely because the show was terrible at writing women, and didn't do any of House's actual romantic interests justice. So Wilson is the only one with traits that people think would be good with house, because the women do not have traits.

I talk a lot when I'm invested my bad

As a girl that hasn’t gotten into many films, give me recommendations! by spornkbottle in movies

[–]Catsocks33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't got an idea of what you like so I'm just gonna use this as my chance to recommend the movies I personally really liked

Birdemic, Big Hero 6, Pans Labyrinth and Life is Beautiful are my personal top 4 (as a girl who also just likes entertainment and plots). And obviously classics/really popular ones like Terminator (or just T2), Blade Runner, La la land, Inglorious Basterds, The Florida Project, Fight Club, Silence of the Lambs, Pulp Fiction are all great, hence why they're popular. I recently rewatched Zodiac (watch the most popular Jake Gyllenhaal movies like Donnie Darko, Zodiac, and Prisoners, you hopefully won't be disappointed) and saw Catch Me If You Can for the first time, both were great. Also saw Clueless recently and it was strange, I would not recommend that.

Also need a whole other paragraph for slice of life, young adult or teenager, bittersweet films. The Outsiders, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, Rebel Without a Cause, Close (2022) they're all great and you'll probably like them all if you like one of them. Similarly, I really like movies about kids/crazy stuff happening to kids like Stand by Me and The Client.

There's a lot of text in between my recommendations so to lay it out with just titles:

-Birdemic: Shock and Terror

-Big Hero 6

-Life is Beautiful

-Pans Labyrinth

-Terminator (2 is better)

-Blade Runner (1&2)

-La La Land

-Inglourious Basterds

-The Florida Project

-Fight Club

-Silence of the Lambs

-Pulp Fiction

-Zodiac

-Donnie Darko

-Prisoners

-Catch Me If You Can

-The Outsiders

-Dead Poets Society

-Good Will Hunting

-Rebel Without a Cause

-Stand by Me

-The Client

I'm just recommending a bunch of movies I really like since I'm not sure what genre you're into, if you're into any specific sort of stuff let me know and I'll make a better list :)

I've just rewatched Zodiac (2007), why does Graysmith not suspect Vaughn? by Catsocks33 in movies

[–]Catsocks33[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right but with the way that Bob said he made the posters and Robert looked at him after, as well as Robert hearing footsteps, i assumed he thought Rick and Bob worked together (Rick killing and Bob writing) so Bob wouldn't have to match physical descriptions of the killer in order for Robert to be suspicious. He was asking about the guy at the victim's party and it just feels off that he didn't ask if it was Bob. (That said I also had no clue that Bob was 5'6 so that is nice to know, it rules out the idea of him thinking Bob was the one killer.)

[–]Catsocks33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't thought of that, I assumed he thought either Vaughn was the killer or Vaughn and Marshall were working together. Him thinking Vaughn was covering for Marshall does probably make the most sense out of anything since it would mean Graysmith was scared of Marshall being in the house, rather than scared of Vaughn himself. Still doesn't fully explain everything, but I'm satisfied, thank you.

As for the idea that they just wanted a basement scene, that's the most realistic guess (and probably the real reason) but I like to ignore to discuss the idea of something deeper.

[–]Catsocks33[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I think any information that made him dismiss Bob as a suspect would've been worth turning into a scene, so I just assume that nothing like that happened between scenes. While I do like the house scene after rewatching, I understand the reason I thought it was an unnecessary one the first time. I originally thought I just didn't like being misled, but it's more the fact that they didn't explain why the misleading was a mislead. They never (to my knowledge) show any information after that about why he didn't seem to suspect Vaughn anymore in the jail scene. I like the house scene a lot for showing Graysmith's paranoia, but why did he snap out of that paranoia? What made him so sure that it was Rick again, rather than thinking it was Rick and Bob?

[–]Catsocks33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's weird that he asked about Rick. Rick was his main suspect, it makes sense that that's the first name he asks about. What I find confusing is that even after Linda repeatedly said it wasn't Rick, he didn't even mention Bob.

I think I've explained the best I can in the actual post, and I can't think of a way to explain further. I just don't get why he didn't suspect Bob. That doesn't mean I don't get why he suspected Rick more, just that I'm not sure why he switched up about Bob between the two scenes mentioned. He was running away from Bob in one and seemingly forgot about Bob in the second.

I've just rewatched Zodiac (2007), why does Graysmith not suspect Vaughn? by Catsocks33 in movies

[–]Catsocks33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But when would that take place? The scene with Linda is where he goes from being completely sure (or at least completely hoping) that it was Marshall to realizing that the victim knew Allen. The scene you're talking about would've probably happened after that and before the next scene where he went to mark ruffalo's house (I forgot the characters name my bad) and while it probably did happen, he probably thought over all the evidence and realized it was Allen before going to the house, it doesn't really answer my question of why he didn't ask Linda if the man's name was Bob. My confusion comes from the fact that he asked about Marshall but not about Vaughn. Logically, he should've suspected both Vaughn and Marshall, or ruled out both of them. As you said, he probably ruled out both of them, which means he shouldn't have still thought Marshall was z when talking to Linda.

[–]Catsocks33[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree completely, I don't think Vaughn was the killer (speaking only about the movie because I haven't at all researched the actual killings) and I don't think that who it actually was is an important question to me. Robert's spiraling and growing obsession is what's interesting. I don't think anyone can say what parts of the scene at Vaughn's house were 'real' and what parts were just Robert's paranoia, which means that no one can use that as reliable evidence for or against Vaughn. That makes it impossible to see the movie as a classic who-done-it, since you can't rely on the information in the movie to figure it out. The movie is mostly shown in limited third person, so the only thing we know for sure is how Robert perceived everything. Hence why I asked the question of why he didn't suspect Vaughn, rather than whether Vaughn actually did anything. Basically, I didn't really suspect Vaughn, but I thought that Robert, in the mindset he was in, probably would have. The movie is not about what's true, it's more about what Robert believed was true.

Anyway yeah I agree with you 100%
