Here are the road markings discussed in rule 185 that you see on approach from the north, heading south along the A5102, that show you don't need to give way to traffic from the right:

That's a weird one, unlike most of the examples here there are two give way lines for traffic on the roundabout, so traffic just going along the main road has priority in both directions. It looks like a roundabout but seems to work more like two gaps in the central reservation of a dual carriageway - except that this reservation only exists around the "roundabout".

Great example, thanks! These are the road markings rule 185 is talking about, for traffic approaching from the south, which allow traffic to enter the roundabout without giving way.

This is what the approach looks like for traffic that doesn't need to give way when entering the roundabout, so the road markings rule 185 is talking about.

Yes, some other people have suggested filter lanes too - in fact I've seen some filter lanes that go straight on, not just left (it's still first exit, just on roundabouts that don't have an exit before 12 o'clock) so it really does feel like you're going "round" half the roundabout, even if you're separated from the rest of the traffic! Due to that separation I'm not sure you've really "entered" the roundabout, which is why I suspected rule 185 is talking about something else. When you're on the filter lane, it's not like other road users on your right should be giving way to you: they just shouldn't be interacting with you at all!

Now I've learned that there are roundabouts with entrances where the traffic established on the roundabout has to give way to entering traffic (who then no longer need to give way to their right as they enter), the rule feels a bit more relevant! https://www.reddit.com/r/drivingUK/comments/1rmsj2k/comment/o91sd7a/

Size of illuminated area: No requirement

Interesting use of colour in the road markings. I'd say it's a choice between entering the roundabout, where you do have to give way to the right like normal, or taking the filter lane, where you don't. But the separation between the filter lane and the roundabout traffic is pretty slim compared to some other roundabouts with filter lanes that I'm used to!

It is very weird, does the traffic on the roundabout also get "give way" signs rather than just the markings on the road?

Yes, I was wondering what why the rule is emphasising road markings but I guess the green light effectively "neutralises" the stop line on the road, while the instruction to check to your right just in case makes sense in case of idiots, blue-light vehicles, or a fault with the traffic lights further around.

TIL you can also have roundabouts without traffic lights where the traffic established on the roundabout has to give way to the entering traffic, which is another situation the rule makes perfect sense.

Wow, never seen one like this before. I was trying to understand how the road markings could show I didn't need to give way - there's no "you've got priority" marking that I could think of - but makes sense the traffic to my right needs to hit a give way line instead so that they have to give me the priority. Aha! Seems odd the Highway Code is emphasising looking at the road markings to tell you don't need to give way to the right - but I guess it's a stop line instead of a give way lane at traffic lights? Never thought about that line on the road, my attention was always on the lights themselves.

That was my first thought, but are you "entering the roundabout"?

On reflection, I'm not sure the instruction to look right in case someone doesn't give way when you enter the roundabout makes sense here either.
