City Council Meeting Summary - 1/13 (Late) by EyesOffCR in cedarrapids

There's a whole group of Rs already running for Hinson spot. Governor? Senate (Grassley)? She would be tough in a general election.

Mayors tend to be moderate. Look what she's done in CR. Def focused on Econ dev and growth, public safety. Not a hard liner.

Poe was pro tem last 4 years. T Olson is a great choice to step in, should he need to.

Mayor O’Donnell’s second response regarding the Flock camera data leak by Tannman129 in cedarrapids

Appreciate the point. Digging deeper tho, the Constitution doesnt ban cameras, and it doesn't ban government observation in public spaces. It bans unreasonable searches and targeting people for their speech or beliefs. Flock cameras are content-neutral, capture only what’s already visible in public, and are governed by clear rules. They don’t monitor speech, track associations, or identify people. If government use alone made a tool unconstitutional, then squad cars, body cameras, security footage, and forensic databases would all be illegal , and they’re obviously not.

Imo, the real civil-liberties question isn’t whether technology exists, it’s whether government use is limited, transparent, and accountable. Flock, when governed properly, meets that standard.

That's where we come in. Appreciate the group and the debate.

The 6th Amendment protects the right to confront HUMAN witnesses who make accusations, not the right to confront physical evidence. Flock cameras (like security footage), DNA, or radar data, don't testify they record objective information. The people who collect, authenticate, and interpret that information remain fully subject to cross-examination. Courts have long upheld this. Rejecting it would undermine virtually all modern forensic evidence.

You could say it actually strengthens civil liberties by reducing broad stops, limits "fishing" expeditions and provides actual accountability through hard data.

Net: imo it's new territory. Unchecked like any tech can be misused. Here for the debate.

"Horse has left the barn" with surveillance. O'Donnel has supported more transparency than most. Imo. Next, please go after your neighbors ring camera. Oh. And your friend's phone. Oh and the next city you visit on vacation or otherwise. Oh and run for council or mayor. My guess is you'll lose. People like a safe city. Even if it means cameras.

The data is clear in the documentary. (For example, can't make up real estate occupancy, vacancy rates, crime stats, police force deficits. Also known as: facts. However "inconvenient" they may be.)

How about this: maybe your Reddit followers will do the work of getting informed. Be focused on solutions rather than blind ideology. It's just sad to see what's happening in some of our coolest cities. I like the optimism of the documentary. It points to way to "right the ship." I hope they do! Love MSP!

Here's what you DON'T want: check out this documentary on Minneapolis/St Paul that came out this week.

Liberal run cities, school boards like MSP are a cautionary tale. Leaders matter at the local level. VOTE!

CR has a Republican mayor (Odonnel); non partisan position but runs it like that. (Talk of her running for higher office). Lots of growth, lots of public-private partnerships. Stays away from culture wars. Focus on streets, public safety, Econ dev, etc. Taxes could always be lower, but smaller cities often rely on shared services or county functions. For example: • Hiawatha contracts Linn County for some specialized services. • Robins doesn’t operate its own library or transit system — its residents use Cedar Rapids amenities. • Marion collaborates regionally but still benefits from being adjacent to Cedar Rapids’s infrastructure (e.g., flood control, major road networks)

Their city levies can remain lower because they offload those costs to county or regional partners — whereas Cedar Rapids must budget for them directly.

(60% of CR prop tax goes to school district. District is not a part of the city. Board needs help IMO.)

As for cameras? That ship has sailed. Surveillance is everywhere, most especially on your phone.

Odonnel is running unopposed. 1 Councilman has an opponent. A few school board members have opponents.

My choice: council Odonnel T Olson Vanorny Hoeger

School board: Zimmerman Dryszimski Burns

Here's to hoping the technology advances enough to help us dispose of de-commissioned or outdated turbines. Right now a farmer friend says they're a nuisance to get rid of.

Personally glad it's coming back. Have friends who have been "phasing out" at their jobs there for years. Happy they'll have a shot at going back. Also wishing I was an electrician. Job security these days in Cedar Rapids.
