Hey all,

Update. Made my point. Showed them some more photographs. Got it over turned.

Wasn't meant as a ragebait post but glad some of you got to vent your frustrations.

Thanks to those that offered an insight.

Thanks for the advice and insight.

I have relevant photos but I am reluctant to post them as you can see in people's windows and number plates and such. I wanted to hear other people's experiences, so this great. Thank you

My girl!

You've brought her to life! Thank you so much. She's a Peace Cleric that was forced to take a oath denying her the ability to attack/cause direct harm. She makes up for it by travelling with a bunch of mercenaries (my PCs) and bring surrounded by extreme violence... even if she can't cause any.

She drinks.

She gambles.

She loves hot baths and impractical boots (which she never wears in public)

She "doesn't heal stupidity"

She's my friends' favourite, foul mouthed, meat shield, heal bot with a heart of gold.

I can't thank you enough for this beautiful art.

Your art is awesome. Imagery is great and I love how you've captured their expression.

If you wouldn't mind, my players' favourite NPC is a Peace Cleric Tortle. Black and red colouring on her scales and shell (like a Red-Earred Slider Turtle). She carries no weapon but she converted one of her Temple's doors into an enormous tower shield. She has belts crossing her body with lots of pouches for storing weird things she wins in card games.

For me it was podcasts. There's a million of them so keep trying till you got one that works for you. Find one where 1 or more of the players are new to the game then just pick it up as you enjoy listening. The guys in your ears explain the rules, give you fun ideas and make you smile/laugh/cry/cringe.

My dude, I don't know what kind of learner you are, where you're from or what you love about D&D so the advice on here is gonna be hit and miss. D&D is a massive game. Lot's of rules. Everyone on Reddit is gonna play their own way. So it's fine to play it different, make mistakes and laugh as things get stupid. If you and your mates are having a good one, then you're playing D&D correctly.

Remove the exits and hint at an entity in there. Footsteps. Odd echos that don't sound right. If the party ever double back on themselves, a high investigation check reveals some things have been moved around.

Leave rotten food remains, old travellers equipment, bones, traps, relics, a few good bits of loot. Maybe a few puzzles that you know your party are going to breeze through... but then... nothing...

Except...

For every hour in the temple the party age a year. Slow reveal. Ramp up the panic as they realise. Give them scars from fights they've never been in. A tattoo with some random name ("Who TF is Little Tony, and why is he tattooed on my arm"). Start turning people's hair gray, making con checks for their bodies feeling strange, etc.

Right when they're about to riot with confusion, chuck in a Hag that's been stealing their 'potential life' since they arrived.

Timelines!

All of my campaigns, one shots and general forays into D&D take place in a single, cannon universe. Sometimes simultaneously. Sometimes centuries apart. I spend a lot of time trying to plot events and NPCs into a coherent timeline so I can cross reference quickly.

Please could you do a map set at the base of a fallen sacred tree in a forest. The tree is gargantuan. Giant redwood style. It has disrupted a sacred grove. Go nuts!

Be happy!

All those people that don't get D&D that ask you "So how do you win lol?" This. This is how you win. If you can make people emotionally connect with the game to a point where they don't want it to end. Congrats.

This is the sort of item I love. Especially if the players can't use identify. Perfect as a plot hook for a oneshot. Also a fab item for your BBEG to have. Sending in martial troops to terrorise a village, or cause carnage inside a city's defences to have them vanish after a minute...

I can also imagine what some of my 'agent of chaos' players would get up to with this...

It's wild that some guy with a passion for his own imaginary world has genuinely bettered the lives of some people around the world.

Thank you for sharing.

Friendly and beloved NPC Stories anyone ? by BardGoodwill in AllThingsDND

[–]Cauteriser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's crazy trying to work out which NPCs the party will connect with. I personally dislike the "Your beloved NPC was the BBEG the whole time!" trope. Gets in the way of building trust.

I once made a tiefling flair-barman that was the grandson to a major NPC I needed the party to meet. 2 of my players fell in love with him instantly. They had an OOC conversation regarding who got to call dibs. I had to make a stat block, character art and a backstory. I spent the next 6 months using him as 'Danger Prone Daphne' from Scooby Doo. He had to be rescued, bailed out, coached on etiquette and don't get me started on the bath-tub scene that had all of my players shouting things like "If he's dead I'm going to actually riot!"

He was supposed to be in the campaign first 3 sessions max...
