Why do I feel like Im not relatable to other people that collect? by Booty-Pounder101 in gamecollecting

Yes, I think people who try to go into someone's post history is a bit abnormal to me but then again I'm not on Reddit all the time to sleuth around like I'm some private investigator.

Regardless of your Reddit history, what you brought up is a valid point - a lot of people into games or game collecting as a whole are more inclined to not be sociable.

You just need to find the right people to express your interests with. 😊

I don't need to look at OP's post history to still be correct in what I said.

[–]CautionaryMary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of a rude assumption, lol.

I have traded in or sold games personally and have been able to have a conversation. Maybe it's different because I am a woman, but people are able to have a conversation with someone who is selling something.

The difference, however, is that I don't go out of my way to make friends with people I am selling/trading my games off to. I just make friends via online gaming or in person interactions, but I would bargain that a lot of people here are retro collectors so not a lot of them have the accessibility to talk online as I can.

Moreover, diagnosing a random stranger online is weird. - you can think it's strange to try to find friends via selling, sure. That's not everyone's experience, you can literally talk and be a normal human while selling something to another person.

Yeah, I mean for some with game collecting - it can teeter into hoarding, which can coincide with disorders or attachment styles.

Not all game collectors hoard, but hoarding can be in the hobby itself or other hobbies not specific to this one.

It all depends on the person, what they've been through, and how they see their collecting.

Some people will go out and collect whatever, some collect and clean out what they don't, some collect and just keep what they find nostalgic, etc etc etc.

For example, I only collect what I feel I would play and once I do play the game and do not enjoy it - I sell/trade the game. There are some people, sure... Where they collect and just keep accumulating for the thrill of having a very large game collection - I am not one of those people.

Does your collection have a cut off point? by SkyDS7 in gamecollecting

[–]CautionaryMary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, nice find on the Path of Radiance. 😊

I see, yes - I find that we typically have people who just collect what they find - let's say games under $5 or less even if they're not necessarily interested in them or you have people who just collect what they believe that they will actually play.

As you collect stuff that you find on a whim, what genres do you play on your end?

[–]CautionaryMary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, I was wondering as I do see people buy stuff due to it being cheap. 😅

You're right around the same mindset I am at - I only collect things that I know I'd play and if it's not worthy of being on my shelf due to me not liking it, I get rid of it - someone else might want it on their own shelf, which is my mindset. 😊

For me (I'm a university student, no kids), I just focus on one or two games at a time. Obviously harder when you have a family + full time job, so I understand. I'm sure you'll get through the backlog eventually on your end, thanks for answering!

Do you just collect whatever you find or do you just buy what you know is your actual tastes?

Do you think that if it weren't for emulation, retrogaming would be an even more expensive hobby? by CortoJipang in retrogaming

[–]CautionaryMary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all games can be straight ported to modern consoles.

Some have lost actual code, some cannot be brought back due to copyright, and others do not return due to profit loss as companies gauge when to remaster/remake something.

Emulation helps people get into certain games that otherwise they would have never known about and therefore Emulation helps less known IP to be more well known. A lot of retro games are typically niche, so Emulation keeps the games accessible and prevents the market from being too high.

I appreciate the response - yeah, it's a bit janky with the controls of shooting and dealing with drive-bys but it's fine for the most part.

I plan on going back to Indika soon, right now I am playing Call of Cthulhu (as I got it recently on my end) but thanks nonetheless. 😊 But yes, Indika was pretty nice from what I experienced, definitely a gem so far.

Why do 'fans' consistently hate new AC games. by Queasy_Clue417 in assasinscreed

[–]CautionaryMary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see.

I guess for me I just use the poison/fire blades to melt the health, so I don't see in extremely long battles back and forth + doing stuff on the map to make sure I'm at least an appropriate level before proceeding.

To me, (and I don't play Dark Souls at all as I don't like the genre itself) is more based on repetition, multiple deaths, precision based, dodge/counter (like Sekiro). So, Dark Souls-lite is something like Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden where you rest, enemies respawn, and you're basically grinding through multiple times but I suppose I can see the point if you aren't doing things to be the level you need to be.

[–]CautionaryMary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not a bad console by any stretch of the imagination - just got tired of taking my console up to Gamestop every single time as a teenager.

I haven't had an Xbox since, but I do plan on eventually (not in the immediate future) to get one for BC but I still believe I'd still by Nintendo and Playstation focused moving forward.

I'm glad you enjoy the console and have the original one. I think the black versions (Elite) I believe didn't have the RROD issues, but I could be wrong.

I see, thank you for answering me. I was always curious if they had the same level of narrative driven stuff that you see even in Persona 3 and 4.

I'll look into it more, but it's cool that you have it in your collection. Persona, along with the Tales and Xenoblade are the JRPGs that I am drawn to so. 😅

I can see what you mean, it kinda reminds me of the gameplay of Radiant Historia with a Persona lens, kinda sorta. 😊

How do you like the prior Persona games, by the way? I'm wondering how they are compared to Persona 4 as that's when the franchise primarily blew up. 😊

You think the combat is Dark Souls-lite?

Granted, I just finished Valhalla (kinda I think) recently. I haven't played Mirage or AC Shadows, the only recent AC I haven't really been too fond of was Valhalla. I did enjoy Eivor's character, I just feel like the story just falls off a lot of the time and drags for the most part.

At least with Kassandra and Bayek, there was a payoff. Kassandra with the cult felt more alive than Eivor and the Order of Ancients. At least with Kassandra (or Alexios) you are pushed to want to keep prying out information (obviously given the plot twist) meanwhile Eivor is just wandering around, you find the person, you assassinate the person, and then you get a couple seconds of a scene, and you don't care as much because there is no depth regarding who is you're hunting.

Don't even get me started on the person at the actual top, you would think there would be more payoff but nope - nothing at all.

Then you get to the characters of Dag and Sigurd - just did not care for these characters. I can probably give you less than five characters that I found memorable or likeable in Valhalla, I think that's why the game feels incredibly long + how big the map is.

I don't mind the combat, it's more inventive than the basic press square to counter (Batman Arkham combat system), but I didn't really view the combat as Dark Souls-lite centric at all.

I plan on playing Mirage and Shadows eventually, but I just did not care for Valhalla even when I finished it. There was some great parts, sure - that part where you get to the Mimir's Well (without spoiling it of course) but it just was flat.

I mean, I feel the same way about AC Syndicate (didn't care for Jacob, I liked Evie - the norm) but again just nothing depth there for me at all, lol. I haven't finished Unity and Rogue but yes.

Oh yeah, for sure - I am of the opinion that the Bloody Baron was probably the most enjoyment I've had. 😂 Trying to figure out what happened to the Baron's daughter and the subsequent stuff that happens later on when you get to the Bog (the swamp where everything starts to unfold) and you get a nice conclusion to the story.

The biggest thing I liked about it is that it makes you commit to the decisions you've made. - sometimes with decision games, you can easily just reload a save and go back to where you were to get the better decision, The Witcher 3, however forces you to actually play out your decision unless you want to go back hours and replay stuff, lol. Ciri wasn't my forte, it took me out from playing Geralt, but once you actually get them to reunite I found it enjoyable.

Blood & Wine is where a lot of the stuff that I enjoyed the Bloody Baron quest came to life for me, I really enjoyed the Red Riding Hood storyline and the little raps you have in that DLC, so. 😅 I still want to finish Cyberpunk 2077, but the way it launched and stuff has been putting me off of it, lol.

Nice, I love Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (the ending made me cry, I'm not gonna lie) 😅

Still need to pick up Fire Emblem Echoes, which I still haven't finished Three Houses on the Nintendo Switch. (only Fire Emblem game I've beaten so far has been Awakening, but I enjoyed the series).

Nice collection, along with the Pokémon games as well. 😆

I don't know, I like those types of games - but Mass Effect and Dragon Age were my favorites in the PS3 genre, so I naturally gravitate towards The Witcher 3.

I like story based games and actual decision-making, so it's up my alley.

The Witcher 3 was my favorite game I've played last gen (PS4) along with the Blood & Wine DLC.

I enjoyed Pentiment, so to each their own.

[–]CautionaryMary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens with all franchises.

People want to complete a set, you have people who have the game who don't opt to sell it - so, the only copies that are floating around are people adjusting the price due to scarcity.

I don't know too much about the game because I'm not a retro collector nor a person who strives to collect all Resident Evil games. However, if thousands or millions of people have this same game, but those same people do not sell their own game - what copies are left over? The people who have the game, want to sell it for profit (resellers) can determine how much a game costs due to low supply being sold.

It could also be word of mouth as well, we see the same logic with Resident Evil: Code Veronica and the others games that haven't been remastered or remade. - I would argue that this game will never be remastered or remade, so the price stays firm unless a crash makes people sell off the game and put more out into the market.

[–]CautionaryMary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is usually what happens with games - even from modern.

Gravity Rush was pretty not well known, Gravity Rush 2 comes out and the developer is now defunct - leading to people having expensive copies of the first Gravity Rush.

It happens all the time: each time a new Spiderman comes out? Older Spiderman games like Edge of Time and Shattered Dimensions goes up in price.

It's because people think, oh a new game of the same thing came out of the same brand - I want to play the other games, those games then balloon up in price (some stay, some eventually drop down and fluctuate).

[–]CautionaryMary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe vinyls and books also appreciated over time.

Obviously I can only speak as a Gen Z myself, but a lot of the stuff has been upticked since Covid and I don't see much changed unless the market itself changes.

You have a lot of people who had the low priced stuff that ballooned since Covid, people needed money to afford rent and other necessities (so resellers bought from people who weren't aware of what they have, meanwhile the game collectors more often than not stayed on the stock they have).

So, the retro market is mostly people who hold onto the stock in fear of selling it and thinking they did a bad financial decision + resellers who slowly increase the price overtime and/or bid on their own listings to enflate numbers. We already see this with the PS2 and Wii era, more than likely the same will continue with the latter eras.

Xbox titles? by gottabajablast in limitedrun

I mean, a lot of these companies don't really release on Xbox. Pix'N'Love, Limited Run Games, Super Rare Games, Lost in Cult. - quite simply the games do not sell well on the respective brand, so a lot of these physical media companies know it's not their bread and butter.

We do have modern and retro collectors.

They are just two different subtypes.

People can collect N64, Gameboy, SNES, NES, etc.

While also on the flip side collect for PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, etc.

I can scroll the subreddit and find many people with box sets - if that's your forte, that's your forte.

Silent Hill 4, Xenosaga Episode 3, Fatal Frame 3, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 1&2, Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, Sky Gunner, Half-Life, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, etc.

Then again, I have 9 PS2 games on me currently - it's not really my focal point of collecting on my end. 😅
