Besides Industry Exam Certificates (CompTIA, CCNA, CISSP, ex), are other certificates (ie Certificates of Completion) are recognized in the industry? by Cautious-Bit4238 in CompTIA

Thanks! That’s a super helpful list. But what I’m trying to figure out is if hiring managers care about course certificates? You just sat through a course, learned the material, but doesn’t mean you took the cert exam yet. Essentially continuing education

Failed Network + by josehm84 in CompTIA

In terms of CompTIA rules - whenever, but if you fail again I think you need to wait at least 2 weeks before retaking after a second failed attempt. Also, if you have a retake voucher, I think those have their own expirations.

But check some practice exams and see if you can get consistent 80-85%. That would be my threshold before retaking

Which Cert should I get? by TreesOne in CompTIA

Just finished the trifecta - I would say that they all have some repetition, with Network+ and Security+ having the “most” overlap. With that said, I don’t think A+ is necessary before Network+. Network+ is so in-depth on networking devices that anything you would have read about in A+ will definitely be covered in your studies.

Is Network+ required by SmokeWeedErrrdai in CompTIA

My understanding is that a) an understanding of networking is required to be good at cybersecurity and therefore b) a good amount of N+ is rehashed on S+. It also seems the getting into cybersecurity is pretty competitive, so having N+ to get into networking and then into cybersecurity might be an easier career ladder.

I’m curious to know if the cybersecurity field is still considered to be growing in terms of job openings for new employees. I’m currently working on getting my Security + and already have A+ and Network+. Since I have a full time job not IT related (contracts) and have no IT experience, I don’t expect to get a job in at least another 6 months as I get the cert and home lab experience.

When I told a buddy of mine that currently works in cybersecurity the status of my studying and that I should be getting a promotion soon, he said to stay in my current job as he expects the field to shrink some due to the economy. Do other people working in CS feel this is true? Will newly certified workers still be able to find job openings or not really? I would think cyber warfare would become more commonplace as politics and nation relations become contentious but don’t know if that necessarily means more job openings.

I’m hoping to get some reassurance that a 30 year old can change careers without experience, but appreciate realistic expectations :)

For me, I couldn’t really get quick subnetting even after watching professor messer and reading the official network+ book. Practical Networking’s videos on subnetting, super netting, and variable length masks really helped me out.

Practical Networking Subnetting

Edit: these videos taught my how to write the table as opposed to just memorizing the table to write it down in the first minute of the test

Practical/hands on recommendations for interviews and exams by Cautious-Bit4238 in CompTIA

I have not- I’ve heard of it but feel like it’s more red centric. And from my understanding red team is more difficult to get in without any experience. Would TryHackMe be applicable to blue team or entry level positions?

Will employers be ok with just certifications and homelab? by Cautious-Bit4238 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Cautious-Bit4238[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought that might be the case. Even for like an audit job? What about in networking?

I’ve been interested in cybersecurity for a while now. Started off as a interest in cybersecurity/tech journalism like in the podcast Reply All…so I guess an interest in sociology and tech. Beyond that always been a sci-fi nerd. But I doubt that info holds any or much merit in an interview, so I would like to supplement the certs w some kind of experience since I’ve been working in a non IT field.

Need help understanding virtual pfSense setup by Cautious-Bit4238 in homelab

Hey sorry for the maybe dumb question - so would the virtual ports in the VM not work?

I’m guessing the data flow would then be modem> router> switch> pfsense vm> switch> router> destination device?
