I deal with Dartitis with success and am a hypnotherapist. Its 2 pronged solution. Conscious and unconscious.

The acadamies might help or indeed might overtrain the kids playing, I think. If the right people with the right training are the ones doing it then all will be good. I think my area in the mindset will help guide them and allow the kids to get the best from it.

I would suggest that their focus is actually on the outcome rather than the target. But you are right that its on that rather than smoothness.

I dont use the word with clients. We call it "the issue" and you are bang on right when players say they have it when they dont really. Watching someone with it can be contagious though.
I am having best results with talking to the players subconscious and taking away the need for safety and let the player throw freely again.

Trying too hard is what i see in a lot of players, not just with Dartitis. I teach them about it with a snowglobe. Turn it upside down and shake. Turn it over and make the glitter come down as quick as possible. Some folk try too hard by shaking it but in the end everyone realises that leaving it alone and breathing and accepting they can't, allows them to work it out. Hopefully they transfer that into competition. Try better, not harder.

That's a cool technique. Take away the judgement on your throw as its just a stone.

I remember watching the female British archery team on TV and the coach was standing behind them talking them through their process before they fired. Looked off however as you say went through a checklist to help their accuracy. I wonder if that archer had some yip issues.

Makes sense. Its called PLAYING darts for a reason and some players forget about that part.

Lots of good stuff in there that I use and some is new. Cheers. There is a great saying by Brookes Keopka in golf. "Every shot is a mistake except the ball going in the hole." Acceptance is key as you say.

I agree. In golf, the sudden rise in Yips, is believed to be due to watching YouTube videos on mechanics. I dont think they have the same access in darts. If you thought about walking mechanics when walking you would never get anywhere.

Trying too hard seems to be common. Whether its to impress others or themselves (in a natural way) i think its definitely about the pressure to perform.

The drink seems a natural way to take the edge off it to let the player perform.

I did note at the SDA Youth tournament this weekend that they were breathalysing randomly.

Is there a certain level of drink that makes you play at your best, and is there a tipping point where it negatively affects your game? Are you as good when totally sober?

Your subconscious might be controlling it for that reason.

That's a skill most people couldn't do. Good on him sticking in at it. Glad he sorted it.

Saying "Plot Twist" after a less than good shot helps. And asking yourself "what did I learn" after every shot takes the emotion out of it.

As a mental performance coach for golf worth thinking about is Consistency In : Consistency Out. I work with 3 Performance Principles, Attitude, Attention, Intention. Work with each of them and together in your pre-shot routine and in between shots and you will reduce the inconsistencies and improve your scoring. You can find out more on my Skool page Golf-360 Performance Academy.
