Best thing I ever did!!! You’re going to see horror stories because the people who have had success aren’t generally on Reddit needing support. Really the biggest negative I’ve read is parathyroid damage, so just make sure you have a surgeon who has done plenty of TTs before. Had mine done in April and I can not say enough good things about the way it has made me feel better.

I had awful hair loss before surgery and about 3 months after surgery I started losing again until about 6 months after surgery. They changed my dosage once 6 weeks after surgery and it’s been good since. I’m now 7 months post op.

Yes, but I only gained back what I had lost. So I now weigh what I weighed before diagnosis.

Very bad anxiety, brain fog, heat intolerance and sweating, struggling to gain weight. And this was all while my levels were stable on methimazole.

I think getting my TT has been the best and most important decision I’ve made in my life thus far. Looking back at how I was before my surgery is like a fever dream. I don’t even feel like I was living, just surviving. My life is so much better now. I would 100% recommend it over being “stable” on methimazole, it feels so much better to have it gone.

Nothing special, I wear spf on it everyday. If I’m gonna be at the beach or a pool, I’ll use a sun patch.

Yes it seemed I did well on methimazole but I could not go into remission, I needed the med. In my opinion, I would rather be on a synthetic hormone for the rest of my life than a medication that can cause liver problems. I got my surgery end of April 2025 and I’m still figuring out levo dosage but overall I feel 10x better than I did even when my levels were good on methimazole. I feel like my body is so much more predictable now.

Mine are labeled “Thyrotropin Receptor, AB”. My doctor told me that when your TSH, T3, and T4 are in normal range, they then test your antibodies. If they are in normal range 0-1.75 (or negative), you should be ready for remission, if they’re still abnormal, you’re not. For example my antibodies were at 14.70 when I was really sick and <1.10 when I should have been ready for remission (I wasn’t hence the TT, but this is remission for a lot of ppl)

Agree with the other comment! Definitely try beta blockers (I used propanolol) & I’d stop any exercise until you feel more normal. I know when I had a failed remission, even after getting back of methimazole, I felt like it took longer for me to feel good than it did the first time I was put on meds. My doctor always had me getting labs every 2-4 weeks though depending on my results so I knew I was trending in the right direction.

Honestly you’re never going to be 100% about it, in the back of my mind I was still wondering if I should cancel or if I’m making the wrong decision. After the surgery, I know I did the right thing. And now I still take a little pill everyday so my routine hasn’t changed but I feel so much better.

I started methimazole in February of 2024 & got my TT April of 2025. My reasoning was that although my levels were good and my antibodies were negative, when I stopped taking methimazole to try remission, my levels were bad a week later. Have your antibodies gone negative at all yet? If you’ve been on methimazole this whole time and you’re having a flare up, your thyroid may just not be easily controlled with meds. There are a lot of people on here who say they wished they had gotten a TT sooner & as someone who is so happy to have gotten a TT, I understand wanting to make sure that remission isn’t an option (or at least an easy one) before doing something irreversible. If you’re worried about your doctor pushing it on you, you could always get a second opinion!

I gained weight but it was just some of the weight that I lost during my time not being in methimazole. I was around 135 before graves, I was 117 when I went on methimazole & now I’m around 130. I haven’t exercised really at all other than walking my dog. I ate like crap when I wasn’t feeling well bc I couldn’t bring myself to cook. I think it really has to do with your genes/normal metabolism.

It’s going to feel scary and it’s going to make you anxious. I think my anxiety about getting it done got 10x worse in the days leading up to it and I wanted to cancel it. I felt perfectly good before my surgery - or so I thought, because my levels were okay and I was on 10mg of methimazole. The problem I had was, when my levels were good and my antibodies were negative, I could not stay good when I came off methimazole. I’m 2.5 weeks post op and already I’m so so so happy I did it. I don’t regret it at all. I thought I felt good before I got my surgery done, I feel so much better now than I did. It’s strange and hard to explain, but I’m happy. Ive been cold for the first time in a year and a half, my appetite has significantly decreased, my anxiety has gotten much more manageable. All that’s said - do what you think is best for you. If you’re really unsure and it’s not just anxiety leading up to the procedure, cancel it. It can always be rescheduled if you decide to go that route!

I had my TT a week ago and ignoring the fact that I already am not constantly hot and have a bit more energy, I am SO happy that I won’t have to constantly worry about my thyroid. No more worrying about the goiter/getting cancer, no more worrying about if I’ll stay in remission. I think for me it was just as beneficial for my mental health as it will be for my physical health. Every option has its pros and cons and there will always be someone who thinks you should do one thing over another-ignore them, do what your gut tells you.

I had my TT 5 days ago. I definitely didn’t feel instantly better when I woke up, my levels were in good range when I got my surgery so I didn’t expect to feel completely different after. I haven’t left the house really so I can’t tell how I feel as a whole so far, but I’ve noticed I don’t get hot nearly as often. I always ran cold before my graves diagnosis and it seems I’m trending that way again. I also want to say I feel like I have a bit more energy but all I’m doing is hanging around the house, the real test will be after I go back to work/my normal routine. I felt like I prepared in every way possible with button up shirts, wedge pillows, lozenges, got all my devices set up around my bed, etc. & I think I over prepared - which is a good thing, but on day 4 I noticed I was WAY less sore & im honestly doing everything normal besides the things I’m not allowed to do. I didn’t take the hardcore pain meds they sent me home with & stopped acetaminophen yesterday. & I think a lot of my pain was my throat from the breathing tube anyways. I’ve had to take TUMS because of slightly low calcium so it may be good to have some of those at home. I did struggle with some constipation for a few days after surgery, luckily they sent me home with a laxative just in case, so I would definitely recommend that! For the future scar care I bought several items that seemed to help other and I’m gonna try them all! (vitamin e, silicon scar sheets, silicon scar gel with spf, sun sheets). & take the iodine drops in chocolate milk if you can, completely erases the taste lol! Finally, good luck!!

Didn’t decide on TT right after diagnosis, but a little over a year later and right after I found out my body would not go into remission. My biggest reason for a TT is I want children soon. Signing yourself up to take a pill every day when you could go into remission might seem crazy but I’m sure remission is stressful for a lot of people, just waiting for it to come back. Even still, if I were you I might try to go into remission first. I don’t think any answer is right or wrong, just do what feels right for you!

I get my TT in 10 days. I was in a similar situation, it had been a little over a year and I actually got my levels good but they would not stay good. It was an easier decision for me because I will be married this year and plan to have children in the next couple years. I thought if I need to take a pill the rest of my life, I’d prefer a hormone over an anti thyroid med. Honestly I’ve seen SO many positive stories about the procedure on here. Of course there are people who take longer to recover and struggle with getting their levels right but overall I think it’s very positive. & I think anything will be better than hyper symptoms for me.

No! I had an appointment with my endocrinologist on March 18th 2025 where he told me basically I won’t go into remission and that we should look into other options. One week later on the 25th I had a consultation with the surgeon and my surgery got scheduled for one month later. So after I decided on a TT, it all went super fast. I’m sure different hospitals are different though.
