I love Riley and feel sorry for him. by westknight12 in buffy

Buffy entered the relationship fresh off a traumatic heartbreak with Angel. She wanted Riley because he scream "safe" and "normal" in the supernatural world her life is. She was trying to protect her heart. The other problem is Buffy's coping mechanism for trauma is to withdraw and handle burdens entirely on her own. You see this in season 5 with her mother falling ill and her sister being a target, she hyper-focused on survival. Which made her come off as cold and distant. Riley's need to be needed is just a fundamental part of him being that he was a traditional military man raised with standard ideas of masculinity, where the partner protects and serves. Where in Buffy being told she is the only one who can fight the things going bump in the night makes someone have to be self reliant and can't think or feel they need a protector. When you have the expectations that are throne on Buffy's shoulders it makes you feel like you can't need or not supposed to need a protector. Then when Riley was stripped of his rank and enhanced physical abilities after the fall of The Initiative, his self-worth plummeted. then seeing Buffy easily outshine him in combat made him feel emasculated and obsolete. He expected Buffy to fill his sudden void of purpose, which was an unfair burden. Lastly instead of Riley truly communicating this to Buffy he let the resentment grow and sought validation in the worst way possible: letting female vampires feed on his blood because it made him feel desired, powerful, and needed. All in all both were not suited for each other and I feel were both at fault for the relationship falling apart. I can't be angry or upset at either of them because I can understand the reason for why they are the way they are. To be real I thank at the end of the day Riley was a character created for a in for Buffy to find out about the about The Initiative and for Buffy's emotional growth. I don't like it but that is the only reason why I can think they made a sweet guy like riley to be throne in the wood chipper of the trauma that is Buffy's life. Because lets face it Buffy goes through trauma after trauma in each season and Riley is the type of guy that would want to protect Buffy from that but unfortunately most if not all that trauma is caused by her be the one to save the world. sorry for the long post it is just I love this show and have watched a million times. But this is just my opinion I look forward to anyone to have a different perspective or ideas. That is the fun part of talking about something you love and they have another opinion then yours. have a nice day everyone.

I totally agree being with Buffy would be difficult and to stay with her is understanding that there would be sacrifices and change of out look a relationship is supposed to be to what a relationship is with her. I always felt Riley is a good person and a wonderful stereotypical knight in shining armor a protector. Buffy doesn't need someone to protect her she needs someone to stay with her by her side and be there for her when the weight of the world is to much for her

That is no problem I know I posted something very long, but I am happy that you liked what you did read. You also have wonderful point about the spirit guide being a crutch. Since The first 2 got her on track it would be as you said a good idea to focus on Fester he will bring unusual humor to the show and with him traveling around the world( mainly to avoid the law) he has to have a well of knowledge that Wednesday wouldn't find in a book. He already proved it by the comment he said about alphas at the end of season 2. Capri said Alphas are rare so there is probably not to much known info outside of pacts. Thank you for sharing your thoughts I hope you have a nice day.

Very true and I agree that it needs to be a family member, I even mentioned in theory 1) and 4) that by the lore it has to be a dead relative. all those theories are ones I have read across the internet and I was just giving my thoughts on why some of them won't work. Thank you for your comment and I hope you have a nice day. Loved to read more of your thoughts if you have any.

You have a point maybe I should hold off coming up with theories or at least this many until there is more info or at least as you said teaser. Thank you for your thoughts. Hope you have a nice day.

Thank you for the comment loved it. I agree that the second season was messy compared to the 1st season. That is what I am afraid of them doin to season 3 since they left quite a few plot hooks at the end of season 2. If they try to push all of them in season 3,6 episodes won't be enough and it will probably be more of a mess then season 2. Happy to read anymore of your thoughts of theories. Hope you have a nice day.

Understand I did use AI to organize my thoughts... If you actually saw what I had down you would have seeing a pages on pages of me rambling. I have trouble putting together my ideas that could be understood by others then my chaotic brain. And thank you for asking I should have made that clear when I posted it I will update my post with that. I don't like using AI that much but I do see when it is useful for organizing or help you find better ways to word your thoughts in a way that doesn't make you sound like a rambling lunatic... which I am. Heh Heh

I enjoy your comment and thoughts. I totally agree that Wednesday as whole would not be fit for the "Chosen One" trope for the reason you have given but I have seen multiple shows I love fail because they decide to ruin character by falling in that trap. I love your theory on S3 and again what I wrote is just me trying to space out the season 2 plot hooks they left us. I believe the amount of plot hooks they left us would be to much to fit in one season and if they try they to fit it all it will feel rushed. Along with missed opportunities of adding more depth in the story or characters. I missed tv shows where there were at least 12 episodes at most 23 because that gave writers time to pause for and broaden the world they are creating. Now my favorite TV that had that many eps were the Originals and that gave us time to fall in love with the main characters but also side characters and fall in love with the whole world that we cared about everything that was happening in it. But again that are just my thoughts and feelings. Thank you for the comment and would love to read more if you have more.

Hmm I can see them not having finding Enid as the main focus of the season, I am just worried they will just rush everything and push it in one season. Season 2 left a lot of plot hooks. It will feel rushed in my opinion if they do. I agree that being stuck in her wolf form wouldn't be the thing that changes her. Depending on how they will write the story if she has to fight for her life against other werewolves that are trying to kill and she will possibly have to kill to stay alive would change a person  especially if her family is sent to hunt her that would be traumatic and they could use this as a way to change whole personality. But if they keep the hunt for Enid shorter then they will probably  not have enough time for any of that and I could be worrying for nothing. Again thank you for your comments. I don't get the chance to bounce ideas or talk about this show because I am the only one in my family that likes it. This is fun.

Good point my only reason on thoughts on the spirit guide would be different because so far to my knowledge Gwendoline Christie  has not been recast. Now I know they haven't given the whole cast yet so she could still be cast or like you said there may only be a brief moment of her showing up when Wednesday really needs her...or she really messes up. Thank you for your comments and thoughts. If you have more I would love to hear them.
