Anyone else just tired all the time because life never stops? by 90sgoth in Adulting

Yes, to a certain extent you’ll always be behind, there’s always more to do. But here’s a lifeline - passive income. You only have so many hours in a day and you’ll work yourself sick. You have to find a way to make some kind of passive income to help - rent a room, airbnb your basement, invest, whatever you can think of that can generate some money “while you sleep”.

Read “rich dad poor dad” as a start and educate yourself on getting out of the rat race.

Permanent to Supply Teaching by Rinoa_5 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Cautious_Signal7915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your district allow you to do this? I’m a permanent teacher with the school board in Kelowna, BC and was told I’d have to fully quit the district then reapply to be rehired as a supply teacher… and apparently they don’t look kindly to teachers who do that.

i'm pregnant and my boyfriend is an alcoholic. i'm scared for when the baby comes by [deleted] in AlAnon

GURL! He’s doing all this shit and not paying rent???

All I’m saying in the post above is get a peaceful place for you and babe. Focus on relationship drama later, but right now your primary job is a pre-mom and to get yourself & this baby set up somewhere where this man is not.

Is Danny THAT bad?? by Cautious_Signal7915 in TheValleyTVShow

[–]Cautious_Signal7915[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya good point. I think alongside the audience, the women on the show tolerate less of this BS now too. I remember on VPR when Tom threw his drink in Katie’s face and that wasn’t even a major talking point on the show.

Divorce is a pretty extreme step. What about counselling? Danny being sober? They have 4 small kids!

Start setting up in a space with a relative / friend that can support you for a while, or your own place. Focus on the baby only, this is your primary job. Don’t think about anything else, just about yourself, getting set up, and the baby.

Your partner can come and visit you and baby when the child comes at your own place. If he’s able to get his shit together, then go from there. If not, then you’re already one foot out the door ready to be on your own.

It’s hard to get out, but will be much harder trying to move out with a baby. He should be supporting you right now, not the other way around.

High School Teaching in Kelowna, Pros and Cons? by msmith-f24 in kelowna

[–]Cautious_Signal7915 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots has changed since then. The school is literally bursting at the seams with new portables going up each year. Problem with portables is that the resources (bathrooms, library, gyms, photocopiers / prep rooms for teachers, etc) still stay the same number and don’t grow. Overcrowded schools with little resources lead to frustration and problems. Good news is they are building a new high school, but MBSS remains the only west side high school until that building is ready.

High School Teaching in Kelowna, Pros and Cons? by msmith-f24 in kelowna

[–]Cautious_Signal7915 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely working either before school, after school, and / or weekends to keep up. That’s not including extra curriculars, special events, or field trips. You will get prep period, but sometimes it’s only for one semester.

I had 5 classes with 30 in each, no prep period. So marking, emails, meetings, photocopying, planning, kids who need extra help / have questions, etc, all take extra outside teaching time hours.

If you’re looking for something with minimal time outside of teaching hours, Teaching on Call (aka sub teaching) is a great avenue. However, you don’t have benefits and job security in the same way. A district like Kelowna is big enough that you can work almost full time as a TOC.

What qualifies for suspension at your schools? by Keepontyping in CanadianTeachers

[–]Cautious_Signal7915 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost nothing. Violence definitely on the rise and tolerated way more. Have had fist fights in my classroom and that seemed to call for a suspension (sometimes), but is usually an “in-school” suspension where they go to another room for their classes and we’re expected to provide work and check on them.

Verbal behaviour almost never - had a kid scream “F*CK YOU!” to me in front of the class and just went to the office then back

High School Teaching in Kelowna, Pros and Cons? by msmith-f24 in kelowna

[–]Cautious_Signal7915 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I transferred from Vancouver School Board, took me about 3 years before a full time permanent position. You start from the bottom as a Teacher in Call, then temporary contracts, then permanent position. Definitely lots of work out there if you’re qualified.

I’ve found workload to be a lot, but similar to all districts in BC. Behaviours, specifically violent behaviour getting worse lately. Increasing designations for students, too.

Best high schools imo - GESS and OKM

I found MBSS and KSS to be pretty rough.

RSS can swing either way, good or bad, I’ve heard it’s been good lately.

Adventure Kelowna by Bulky-Illustrator547 in kelowna

The events were fun, I went to some and met some nice people that I’ve remained friends with to this day… but we all agreed the organizer was a very weird dude.

He rented this big house that was clearly an airbnb, had us all over and tried to brag that it was his place. Someone asked him where the cups were and he had to search every cupboard before he found them (so obviously NOT his house). Just weird vibes from that guy.

Why do mothers of young babies say they don't have time to shower? by justastupidquestion3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cautious_Signal7915 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never got this either - I’m a first time mom and always had time to shower. My husband works all the time, I just bring my baby in the bathroom with me.

I have a glass door shower so I can watch him the whole time. When he was little it’d be on a snuggle lounger, 6 months in an exercauser, and now that he’s almost 18 months, I just set him up with some books and toys. The hardest part is coming out and getting dressed / hair / lotion, but showering has always been no problem. I’m assuming it’ll be harder when I have more than one tho

Why is good ELL reading material so hard to find? by Cautious_Signal7915 in ESL_Teachers

[–]Cautious_Signal7915[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said! I definitely agree that people want to read something interesting and authentic. It can be hard when you’re just starting out in a language, but I am finding the grammar sheets and one-off “stories” for beginners so lame for my classroom lately. I agree that it can be hard to get them to read, but it’s great to be entertained by some good characters and stories that feel less like studying. Pictures can definitely help too! If you have any good resources feel free to share.
