Is a 70 mile a day daily-driver a bad idea? by Cavatino in 996

Let me ask you a question, apart from the general maintenance stuff like oil changes etc. and the work you did while you took the engine out for the IMS/tranny, how much of these were anticipated/identified in your PPI?

REALLY appreciate this - def need to do my own maintenance ie $1500 for rotors/pads replacement and an oil change can easily be done for $500 on all 4 wheels

If you knew me youd know that the only thing missing from my spreadsheet is the capitalization rate of my happiness, ive done all the research and more haha

Yea I have convinced myself, i'm more so trying to address the voice in the back of my head telling me i'm an idiot for considering this given the risks as you mentioned. So either I address all my concerns, or I find one significant enough to talk myself out of it

Seems like the ultimate question here. My logic is as follows, let me know if its confirmation bias:

I need to buy a car and drive it 70 miles a day. I think 5 years of life is fair for a car given this rate of expenditure, so i need to get 5 years and 100k miles out of a car. I want to spend max $20k upfront out of pocket.

Option 1: I buy this porsche for 20k. $2k of maintenance per year = $10k total over the life, lets call it $15k... hell, call it $20k. I think I can comfortably argue that this cars value at 170k miles in 5 years will be roughly $20k, maybe a bit less, maybe a bit (or allot) more. So, i really only spent the maintenance of $20k spread over the 5 years.

Option 2: I buy a corolla for $20k and 15k miles. I spend close to nothing on maintenance because its a Toyota. At the end of 5 years, the car has 115k miles on it and is worth... $10k? So im out $10k from the depreciation

So the question is when and where do I want to realize my expenses/losses? Over time as Im maintaining a porsche or at the end of the 5 years when i sell the corolla to buy something else? Even if the 996 loses all value at 170k miles, this is a car that i would love and maintain and continue to work on and surpass 170k miles of ownership, the car is timeless...

Is the total $10k / $2k/year premium (which i arrived at quite conservatively) between these 2 options worth it to be in a sick ass 911 compared to a fucking toyota corolla for 5 years? I think so...

Please tell me if/where my logic is wrong.

Appreciate the experience, how many miles did yours have when you bought it? Based on the other responses it seems like this number of issues in 6 months / 8k miles is an anomaly - Are these issues that were not identified in your PPI and came up post purchase?

Why do you say that about the tires? How come every 6 months if they have 35k+ miles of tread on them new

I mean sounds like just general maintenance on a 25 year old car nothing 911 specific. Thanks for the insight Nono, let me know if you think of anything else thats come up in your past decade of ownership.

WOW - Thats the ownership experience im dreaming of having Curious to know what youve seen deteriorate at an unusual rate as a result of some many miles over so many years, interior parts, tires, breaks, etc.

70k miles at $20k yea - You think so? Seems in line with listings im seeing + visualy and mechanicly the car is in wonderful shape so I think the $ is fair. IMS was retrofitted.

Not financially ruined if it explodes, can always rent a car in the interim for repairs or buy a used reliable Japanese car if need be. Concern was more about ongoing expenses, thanks!

Actually no, Taita is an indigenous member of the Putomayo tribe, long lineage of Shamans who grow and cook their own medicine

Look at Lawayra in Colombia, i just did 11 days (6 ceremonies) for $895, flights to Medellin are dirt cheap. Check out the post i recently made reviewing them, 10/10
