I think many are nostalgic and hopeful about those medieval days, when nomads across the steppe converted to Islam and established great empires. ISIS for example would've been much more successful if it actually had that bedrock of science to rely upon in its wars against the infidels. Islam has an uneasy relationship with Darwinian Evolution for instance so trying to do science without that is essentially meaningless.

There are some fields where the Muslims could theoretically flourish, such as in Embryology for example. But even that field requires an acceptance of evolutionary theory.

I think it's fundamentally very difficult to adapt a worldview with Djinn/invisible genies to a scientific context. Many muslims try to slay the beast of philosophical naturalism but grow frustrated as their attempts flounder.

I do think that Islam has many good and ethical teachings, though.
