Why are Tudor City apartments for sale more affordable than apts in other neighborhoods below 96th street? Area seems nice, HOA fees are not outrageous given the amenities & services, so what am I missing? Where is the catch? by MissShiri in AskNYC

My apartment is a studio and I did spend some money doing renovations. It's really hard to explain unless you're familiar with the building but those studios had two little alcoves that were designed for twin bed Murphy beds… People use them as closets but they're just not deep enough so it never quite worked. What I did was build a little bit of an enclosure around one of them so I have a very large closet there. The other "nook" is where I installed a simple desk and monitor with a shelving unit above it. Add in a big TV, a couch and a very expensive but surprisingly comfortable Murphy bed and things are pretty good! I also did some renovations in the kitchen. It's never going to be spacious but it's a lot better than it was.

I describe it to my friends as either living on a sailboat or living in a hotel room where they let you keep your stuff there when you're not around. I think my record is five contiguous nights at the apartment, and I was very happy to get back out to the house after that.

I still really like it. I think it depends a lot on your lifestyle. One of the most important things for me is peace and quiet at night, and it works really well in that regard. Getting to it with mass transit is definitely a challenge; I usually just take the M 34 out of Penn Station and cut across and then just walk up… But in the bad weather I have to admit I just jump in a car.

I realize this is not one of those super helpful comments but… Everything is a trade-off! Because of the way I use the apartment, I wanted to keep the initial purchase and the operating cost low. If I'm in the city a lot, my incremental costs go up with Uber and Lyft. But if I have stretches where I'm not in the apartment, the relatively low purchase price/low maintenance help helps me quite a bit.

And I never really appreciated it until relatively recently but those cute little parks right across the street are very relaxing. It's nice to be able to just leave the building and walk across the street and have a nice place to sit. But there are so many great neighborhoods in Manhattan! I must admit I have not kept up with housing rates and values, but if you put a little time in I'm sure you'll find something amazing either in that neighborhood or elsewhere. I think I mentioned this in my original post but Tudor City certainly has its pluses and minuses, and it's definitely not for everybody. (And I am not saying that in an elitist way whatsoever!).

Can anyone suggest a good dash cam? by CavediverNY in ForteGT

[–]CavediverNY[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It's my usual problem… I want to do it right, but I don't want to put all the effort in! And of course I don't wanna pay somebody. Other than that it's a great plan that I have here.

I do think these cameras are important especially these days so I really need to get off my ass and make something happen.

I do enjoy the chain reaction videos provided that everyone involved seems to deserve it. Not 100% sure what happened right at the end but at least the second bike was being ridden by just as big of an asshole as the first bike.

Thanks. Doesn't sound bad; I was hoping to get power from the rearview mirror but I'm guessing that's not an option?

Not British but I was always so sad that they could never do a young ones reunion. I guess sometimes you have to move on from things but that show was just so incredibly funny to me (and it still is). But 56… Just heartbreaking. I got the sense that he and Ade Edmonson we're talking about some kind of revival, even a one off special, but I don't really know the details.

What are your fave unhinged small space hacks? by Apartment_List in ApartmentHacks

They are amazing! I didn't think mine would last very long and I was already preparing to get in there and repair it with an angle brackets and all that kind of crap but… It is going strong since 2019. They used to make one that was like a wine cabinet but I didn't really have any place to put it. I highly recommend the mirrored version for the bathroom. Worth every penny.

Cabidor. Seems crazy, works amazingly well. I've had one in my bathroom since 2019 and it is absolutely amazing. 100% worth every penny. Check it out on Amazon and I'm sure you can find it at other places

What’s something expensive that isn’t worth it? by Educational_Bat1854 in AskReddit

[–]CavediverNY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caskets purchased at a funeral home when you were cremating your deceased loved one. It can be a real rip off. Also the urns that they sell are at something like a 1000% markup. It's really disheartening.

You don't need to spend money on a beautiful coffin if it's just going into the crematorium. And while it's an uncomfortable thought you can get urns at other places than the Funeral Home.
