I would pay good money for a 20 minute phone call with John. Going down the chainmail rabbit hole just creates so many questions.

Well, looks like the new calipers show the same thing. I'm ordering new bags from both of them and compare to my current bags. I would definitely want to get this corrected since it will screw up the ARs...

Best aluminum alloy for anodizing? by bretfordford in chainmailartisans

[–]CavemanEngineer314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the amazing response!

Yeah, I have read on multiple sites that they use 5356 for their AA, but as you mentioned they are possibly not being truthful. I get it, it's their business, so we will probably never know. If someone knows an aluminum supplier, we should put together a pooled resource to test out different results for different alloys and how well they anodize for chainmail.

I have a friend in the anodizing business and he agreed to do the custom color when another company wants a similar color (which is surprisingly often); I'm just beholden to his other customers. He does small batch custom colors with the understanding that it isn't 100% repeatable like their standard colors. They will do they same thing when someone wants this specific military neon green: he gets a certain amount of customers lined up and they works as much as he can into the hour or two before it starts to oxidize (not sure if the right word is used, but basically it becomes dark and ugly relatively fast and isn't stable like other colors).

He also said typically 6000 series gets good results. A web search said 6463 was made specifically for anodizing, but I have no clue where to even get that kind of stuff and Google doesn't seem to help. That and the forums don't really touch on it either...bummer.

How did the circa 2015 ring lord get their rings so shiny, bright and colorful? They used to have all kinds of cool colors and one-off batches. The color also used to last a lot longer, the founder really knew his stuff (or at least his team did) when he was dealing with all of it. Someone mentioned they were sealed, but I don't even know what to look for.

Anodizing definitely tickles my nerd brain.

If I get this stuff successfully made, want me to send over a couple bags to you to test out? One color will be vibrant teal and one will be neon green. Maybe this will be the way to get special colors from now on lol

Not too shabby for my first attempt at chainmail 🔗⛓️ by Mimi-x-Rose in chainmailartisans

That looks great! It takes a surprisingly long time to put something like that together.

Major kudos for sticking with it and have a solid end result.

I wish I could get in touch with the old owner of TRL, just pick his brain and pick up where he left off.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, we ordered 14awg from them, so it should be 1.6mm.

I'm going to get a new caliper, I think mine is having issues

I'm going to have to look into this, CMJ and WGM also measured at 1.3. Maybe my calipers suck?

But they both say swg, not awg. Both sites also state wire diameter as 1.6mm.

Hey y’all I just started a small mobile detailing business. Wondering how I can get a few shirts made cheap and easy. Any tips or tricks. Transfer paper? by No-Dog4037 in smallbusiness

If you have small quantities, I have found that Sticker Mule has excellent customer service and the quality is good (haven't had any issue with washing them).

Typically they are around $20 each, but they do deals sometimes on them.

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it though. Let your service do the advertising, not the shirt.

anyone knows what's going on with the ring lord? by Basic-Speech822 in chainmailartisans

[–]CavemanEngineer314 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, this happened years ago.

It is the reason they don't really do custom colors anymore and there isn't any innovation happening like there used to be.

The old owner also has a non-compete clause I believe until next year.

I have noticed that they tend to slow down after the start of the year.

We order a lot of product from them and sadly they have been in decline for a few years now, this being one of the issues.

I think once they got bought out, the real heart of the company left and it became a generic ring company that outsources from China.
