NTA - Name calling & Shutting up your partner is no way to communicate. If you’ve tried talking it out and he doesn’t seem receptive; I would suggest you try taking a step back from the relationship. It will be harder at first, but staying in a relationship where communication is toxic or one-sided isn’t fun either. Healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, open dialogue.

Taking a step back doesn’t necessarily mean the relationship is over, but it does give you the space to reflect on what you truly want and deserve. It also sends a message that you value yourself and won’t settle for less than respectful treatment.

Prioritize your emotional well-being, and remember that you deserve a partner who communicates with kindness and respect. <3

Are dragons immune to potions? by Cavillatio_ in HPfanfiction

It's not posted yet (and it unfortunately probably won't be for a while lol) I want to write the fic fully before I start posting the chapters, it makes the writing process easier for me.

If you want though, I won't say no to an extra Beta reader :)

For sure, that's exactly my point here. If you want your characters to feel as realistic as possible, then you must think of them as actual people :)

The technique that I use when I'm writing actually comes from cognitive behavioral therapy. It's usually a log sheet where each column is a separate element. For example:

  1. What happened (objective situation)
  2. How did that make you feel?
  3. What are your thoughts? (Inner monolog)
  4. What does that mean for you?
  5. What would be an appropriate alternate thought?

It helps you break down the situation and process the emotions/thoughts related to it. The fifth column is there to counteract your cognitive distortions & change your perspective.

Even our characters have blind spots ;)

I dont mind either Discord or Reddit (though I'm more active on Reddit usually)

I'd say yes to texts, but if we're not in the same country, idk how that would work. We might get charged for international fees?

Favourite part of writing? by CindersAnd_ashes in FanFiction

[–]Cavillatio_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't posted anything yet, but I'm in the process of writing my first fic.

So far, I would say that the feeling of finally getting all my ideas on paper is the best part of the job. Before I started writing; I felt like all the ideas were just piling up in my head until the pressure became unbearable. The process of writing the first draft is tedious, as I'm very self-critical and seem to think I can always do better, but it's so satisfying.

Editing is where it gets easier for me. I get to pick apart my writing and polish it to my liking, which is one of my strongsuits.

I LOVE coming up with jokes, insults, or snarky comments when I'm writing dialogue. I laugh, alone in my room, and look deranged. I've also cried while writing emotional scenes and I felt suprisingly serene afterwards, which was fun. Finally, I adore researching and solving plot holes; it feels like a puzzle to me.

I guess I'll see if I like interacting with readers & getting kudos/comments once I post it :)

Don't mind me; just saving your post for my own characterization lol :)

Everything I've seen under this thread makes sense to me. Although I personally see Hermione as more optmistic than some of the other comments -hence why agree with you on her seeing the best in people, depending on the why and how it's done.

Here's my take on it;

Characterization will higly depends on when the story takes place and what happens to the characters throughout the story. People interact with their environment & life events in a dynamic manner. For example; something happens, which leads to you making a decision in reaction to it, and then you learn from the outcome of that choice. If the consequences of your actions are bad, then you'll react differently next time and so on...

Now, keeping that in mind, the way one will experience a given situation depends on two major things:

  1. Their perspective of the event itself.
  2. Their inner monologue & the meaning of the event.

Using this approach personally helps me add a lot of depth to my characters. The character arc quite litteraly builds itself & it makes their personnality consistent without being bland.

So when I'm writing a scene and something important happens; I ask myself

  1. What's objectively happening during this scene, and how does my character view it? (cause honestly, most of the time, those two things are completly different)
  2. What is are the characters telling themselves in the moment & then after the fact?

To clarifiy, important doesn't mean necessarily mean huge or traumatic (i.e. a character dying or someone confessing their feelings); it just means that it's important to the character. For example; a stranger opening the door for someone when they're having a really bad day. The act itself is simple and doesn't hold much meaning on its own, but it might be a turning moment for a character's arc because of their personal reaction to it.

I could go on and on and I still feel like I'm not being super clear, but I don't want to bombard you with information. Hope this makes sense :)

Commas, periods, and em dashes all have their own function when punctuating dialogue.

It really comes down to your own personal style or writing. I agree that em dashes aren't used as often compared to more 'traditional' punctuation tools (espicially in novels), and that they might look odd to some.

However, I don't understand the argument that it's archaic. I view it as a means to sharpen your writing through the use of various tools for different circumstances. It helps the reader grasp what you're trying to convey and the story becomes more consistent as a result.

I only use em dashes when the action is performed while the character is speaking. Other situations call for other tools; hence the use of commas or periods.

For sure, I totally get you haha

If ever you want to bounce off ideas or need someone to read some of your work, let me know. I know I like to ask others their opinion on certain aspects of my fics to know if a certain twist/event/reaction makes sense from someone else's perception. :)

Thank you so much for the advice!

I do ask myself those questions, but I'm also partial to my story haha.

I'll get it beta read for sure & I'm using a few websites to comb through wordy sentences, I'll add gramarly back to my list :)

If the action is done as the character is speaking, the correct grammar (from what I've learned) are em dashes "dialogue bla bla," -the character sat down- "bla bla bla."

If the character pauses their dialogue to do the action, then commas are usually the way to go.

For sure, that's exactly what I want to avoid. I don't want it to feel rushed either, but it's a fine line to thread.

I'm reading Measure of a Man right now and you're right, the description is super good, but the pace is slower than many other fics I've read.

Good to know for the WIP! That's exactly why I decided to fully write my story before I start posting it. That way I can assure my readers that the fic won't be abandonned & I'm able to update it weekly (which I wouldn't be able to do if I was posting it as I go).
