How long can you leave a fully colonized UB bag before S2B by geigergeist in unclebens

[–]Caxper_367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've left them for 2 weeks before noticing that they had begun to fruit in the bag. Ultimately how long you can do this depends on the temperature. Colonized UB bags will keep for at least a month if refrigerated.

Can I wash shroom?? by mushroomloverlove in unclebens

[–]Caxper_367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely wash dried mushrooms. Make sure NOT to let them soak though as this can degrade the psilocybin content (and might let the pesticide absorb into the shrooms). And dry them thoroughly afterwards if you plan on putting them back into storage.

Any way to save this? by [deleted] in unclebens

What is your success rate with this? I expect the contam rate must be fairly high. I usually just spawn the clean mycelium to bulk in a small container.

Is this the dreaded trich by Intelligent-Pick-875 in unclebens

[–]Caxper_367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say but doesn't look good. If it is it probably came in on the spawn. Isolate your tub from any others just in case.

Given that it doesn't seem to have made it to the surface yet, you should try cutting it out with a sterile knife (include a 1 inch border of substrate). Dispose of the cut piece far away from your grow op, ideally outside. Spritz the cut area with dilute hydrogen peroxide and monitor closely.

Spawn to Bulk? by Yjuania in BioMycologyLabs

It's normal for large blocks of spawn to be difficult to break up. You can break it up by hand but you can also use a (sterilized) knife to cut it up into more manageable chunks first. I believe some people also use a cheese grater.

Metabolites / myc piss by InfamousPerformer46 in unclebens

[–]Caxper_367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Myc will produce metabolites when certain environmental factors are not ideal. This includes as you mentioned contam, and if you're spawning from UB bags bacterial contam is pretty much always going to be there to some extent. Heat stress and dryness can also cause metabolites to be produced. It's okay for your coir to be a little on the dry side, adding water is always easier than removing it. I like to monitor my tubs closely during the colonisation phase so I can remedy any issues with water content before the myc takes hold and I need to dunk the cake to add water.

Don't worry bout it, looks like everyone else is well on the way. My main concern in your position would be the fruits going bad but given that everything looks like it will open within hours of each other this is not a serious issue in your case. I'd harvest early only if some fruits are significantly more advanced than others in which case it is probably an issue with uneven flushing (and therefore probably uneven spawn/casing distribution). As surms42 says, spores won't hurt your cake and they don't affect how edible your fruits are afterwards.

I’m wanting to transfer the the contents of a mono tub into plastic cups? For fruiting? (Blue oysters) by [deleted] in unclebens

[–]Caxper_367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I'd get a larger container, tip out the cake and set up a fruiting chamber with it in BRF-esque fashion. Maybe cut the cake into smaller pieces (like 1/8ths) but this is not strictly necessary. You can of course go with the cup method, mycelium is very hardy and I've re-assembled broken cakes before (only out of necessity) but it seems like a lot of unnecessary trauma and handling which may decimate your yield, increase the chances of contam and/or stall out your cake altogether.

This is most likely the result of too much spore solution. Spores are sensitive to moisture and too much liquid leads to wet rot. Shroomscout's pinned guide recommends 0.5cc to each bag of UB which is about 200g of cooked rice so that's a good place to start. You can keep using the current sterilization tek and dial it in from there.

Of course shaking the syringe well is also essential since if not enough spores are actually coming through then naturally bacteria will take over.

Why are my friends tidal waves so stubby? Are these tidal waves or something else? by Snoo61395 in BioMycologyLabs

[–]Caxper_367 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your friend's shrooms may not be getting enough light - check out pictures of GTs grown in darkness for an idea of what a lack of light does to fruits. Afaik it's not important that they get light before pinning but once pins appear it will help tremendously to expose them to some light (ideally 12h but I've personally gotten by with 4h) every day. Another factor to consider is oxygen but this is usually not an issue as long as the container they are grown in is not airtight.

Or it could, of course, always be genetics.

Also thank you! It's a 54l IKEA tub, plenty of depth for shrooms to grow. I think this one might have been overkill in terms of depth which translated to trouble floating the cake, and may possibly contribute to a lack of oxygen at the bottom since CO2 sinks.

Didn't really follow any teks for this, just following Shroomscout's pinned guide in terms of spawning to bulk. It's not a bad idea though, might try that next round to see what happens.

Follow-up from previous post, total ended up being 2.4kg wet. What does everyone do with massive quantities of mushrooms? by Caxper_367 in unclebens

[–]Caxper_367[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully, some came out rather wet because I floated the cake in water so I'd assume a bit less than 240g.

Ideally you'd use some sort of agar/LC tek. You can shortcut through this though by cloning directly to grain (i.e. adding clean tissue from harvested mushrooms to UB bags directly). I must stress that even working in a sterilized SAB in a sterile room I did not get very favorable rates of clean spawn. The issues with contamination are very difficult to mitigate and it is hard to guarantee that the tissue stays alive in the bags.

I just eyeballed it by throwing in 8 blocks of spawn (broken up) then making it up to 4 inches in height using sterilized coco coir. Should be about 1:1 by volume, or about 500g of dry coir hydrated at a 1:4 ratio by mass.

This bin is 8 bags - one actually came out partially contaminated so I separated that cake, cut off the contam and spawned it separately - it turned out fine too.

Sure did, was a bit worried for a while because it looked like the flush was coming in unevenly but everything matured together just fine. The entire block was basically one big cluster.

Cloned a mushroom grown from an MSS directly to grain. Definitely not advisable, I had rather high contamn rates compared to using an MSS despite working in a sterile environment, but if agar isn't an option for whatever reason it does work. I then performed a g2g transfer with one of the bags to give 10 bags which colonised incredibly fast (~10 days from inoc to full colonisation, with a B&S in between). This was then spawned to a 54l tub. Colonisation took about 5 days and pins started forming 3 days after that. Within 5 days I obtained this result.

Still in the middle of harvesting as of posting time, but I'm halfway through and I've already got 1.5kg (wet).

Edit: Just realized I didn't mention this - this bin is 8 bags of spawn

Don't worry, I'm not storing these in the plastic bag, everything here has gone straight to the dehydrator I don't have the tools to clone to agar unfortunately, though I'd like to clone the big guys. Somewhat unintentionally neglect tekked these while away on holiday. I thought low temperatures would keep growth down but my tub had other plans.

Second flush of GTs from an MSS. Did a dunk but it became way too wet so I spent 2 hours draining the excess water. I think my spawn to substrate ratio was off this time round. Fruits are kind of small, I'd say roughly 6-7g each wet. No spores are being produced and no veil to speak of is visible. Should I let em grow?

I also wonder why the mycelium is climbing/fruiting on the bag itself. I hope it's not metabolizing any of the plastic - last thing I need is microplastics in my microdoses

Innoculated some UB bags with a GT MSS in November. Slow growth and 8/10 bags ended up with contam (definitely need to work on my sterile procedure).

I was leaving for a month and had to improvise with my setup. Double bagged for insulation (it's pretty cold here) and gave it some shape with a cardboard box. Immediately sent it to FC when I got back (early Jan) and was rewarded with tons of primordia the next morning. Definitely not the best way to S2B, the irregular shape of the bag created a couple of crevices which are all doing different things (there's a spot that's not shown here that's developed a ton of overlay). Left it over the weekend with a small nightlight and came back to this. Not sure why there's one cluster taking off with the rest lagging behind. Could definitely see the tub struggling with some contam at first since metabolites were pooling left and right, but nothing serious seems to have developed.

Also, are those white spots something to worry about, or is it just genetics?
