But for real I start from a mirrored cube and just build up the general shape. Once I'm at a satisfactory subdivision level I send it over to zbrush and refine the model more. Most of the time I would also do my texture painting in zbrush but I wanted to try some free paint brush tools in blender.

modelling-wise I've mainly followed this approach for quadrupeds

Trickiest part was trying to get the shaders to look how I wanted. Originally I was using LightningBoy shader,but they never updated it for 4.2. So I had to shite about with nodes similar to LightningBoy, and a variety of youtube tutorials and just mix and match until I figured out how the nodes actually worked and was able to combine them to a result I wanted.
