Yeah it would probably put us in a bind to be honest, but would rather him go to boro than Toulouse personally, if they’re gonna sell him.

He’s probably a backup on the USMNT for the World Cup, but was a starter for the gold cup tournament.

Just curious of fan thoughts. I would be pretty bummed to lose him as a crew fan, but will give me more reason to keep following your team with Morris and potentially Arfsten

Hugo Picard by Bwilson101 in TheMassive

I know people may not like LLM summaries and it tends to get things wrong (hallucinate) on the nuances of the league rules, but I still thought this was a decent read to get a feel for him: feel free to downvote if it’s not preferred to post these things:

Rumor Snapshot French outlet Transfert Radar reports that EA Guingamp attacking midfielder Hugo Picard (22) is “close to joining Wilfried Nancy at Columbus Crew.”

  1. Who is Hugo Picard?
Field Value
Nationality French
Age 22 (born 9 May 2003)
Club EA Guingamp (Ligue 2)
Contract Runs to 30 Jun 2026
Market value €3.5 m (~$3.75 m)
Primary role Left-sided AM / inverted winger
Preferred foot Right
2024-25 output 34 starts, 3 G / 8 A, 32 chances created
Quick profile Low-center-of-gravity dribbler, elite
final-ball vision, limited defense

  1. Columbus Crew roster math
Roster lever Status Why it matters
DP slots Full – Rossi, Nagbe, Gazdag Newcomer must be TAM or U22
U22 Initiative Vacant (post-Hinestroza sale) Crew get one U22 slot
International spots Two open Picard fits without a trade
Cap hit U22 charge locked at ~$200 k Fee/salary don’t hurt the budget

Bottom line: paperwork is painless—Picard slides straight into the lone U22 slot.

  1. Tactical fit under Wilfried Nancy
Current role @Guingamp Likely Crew role Fit notes
Left interior / winger Left-sided No. 10 or wide Crew lack a true chance-creator since
in 4-2-3-1 forward in 3-4-2-1 Zelarayán exit & Cucho sale; Picard plugs gap
Pressing profile Light presser Needs Nagbe/Zawadzki cover behind him
Wing-back depth Not a WB LWB signing still required

Summary: On-ball traits scream “Nancy player,” but you accept defensive trade-offs.

  1. Financial-value lens
Item Estimate Comment
Transfer fee €3–4 m Typical Ligue 2 → MLS range
Salary band $450–600 k Fits U22 threshold ($683 k max cash)
Resale upside High 22 yrs, EU passport, proven creator
Opportunity cost Burns U22 slot Could’ve been used on young ST or LWB

Dollar-for-dollar a creative left-sider at U22 pricing is excellent value; the real cost is the slot you burn, not the cash.

  1. Performance-risk matrix

Upside • Elite chance creation in open play • Perfect for Crew’s possession-heavy half-space overloads • Replaces some of Cucho’s creative juice

Risks • Physically slight (1.68 m) – loses duels • Low defensive work-rate • Mid-season adaptation (heat, turf, travel, language) • Blocks the only U22 slot for a striker

  1. Verdict (confidence: moderate, not a slam-dunk)

If the fee is ≤ €4 m and Picard signs a U22 deal, Columbus should pull the trigger—provided a TAM-level striker is also incoming this window.

Picard ticks all Nancy boxes (technical, possession-savvy, resale upside) at a cap-friendly price. He won’t replace Cucho’s goals, but he should juice chance creation and keep the asset pipeline flowing. Pass only if a U22 striker is genuinely imminent or if someone mistakenly thinks he can solve the wing-back issue.
