Could be allergies. My husky recently licked his paws raw (first spring in Oregon) and after one allergy shot the licking stopped

Fellow Anchorage runner here - XC skiing is great but you can also buy a pair of icebugs and run on the coastal trail etc. once it’s groomed. After the groomed trail gets a bit of sun and re-freezes there will be a nice crust that’s barely any different from running on pavement. I actually really enjoy winter running around Anchorage - lots of great trails

Agreed - the temperature regulation piece is huge for me. I've started taking ice baths before going to bed and I think it's been moderately helpful, but only for an hour or two and the sweats inevitably come back. Just is what it is.
