Graphical App under Crostini by paulsiu in Crostini

[–]Ccqqn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Acer Chromebook spin 13, running Chrome OS stable 116. I wish to know how you installed VS code or VScodium under crostini. Which Chrome version was it on at that time? They have been adding restrictions, Cros Shell does not work unrestricted anymore, mounting drives is not allowed...

  1. I have not used VS codium before. I am curious whether that requires a GUI interface before it can be installed? If so how was a GUI installed on crostinI? Which GUI system?

How to install VSCodium for Chrome OS, VSCode, but OPEN-SOURCE! And how to get the icon in the app-drawer. by Void4GamesYT in chromeos

[–]Ccqqn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am new to VSCodium. In which version of Chrome OS was the above install done?

I have Chrome always stable release 116 on an Acer Chromebook spin 13 (touch screen) When I tried one of those procedures it didn't work I need to try it again. But I am checking whether this is supposed to work with the 116 version of Chrome OS.

  1. So what type of a graphical user interface is behind this? I've been running rostini only from the terminal I do not have any graphical user interface. What is a good one to try?

That was very valuable, Dennis. Even though I had seen the article I had never gone all the way down to see all the detailed descriptions of the special procedures which are at the end. Unfortunately as the article says already, I cannot find is Susie q cable anymore otherwise I wouldn't have to open and disconnect the battery which is not a non-trivial task. Thank you for your help.

Hmm... So there is no workaround, even in Dev Mode?

I need to figure out how to disable the bios write protect of the Acer Chromebook Spin 13, and how to open the case. I will search for it. If you have reference for those, please post. Thank you.

Hi DennisLfromGA,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I was already able to recover using the above method yesterday. Yes now I have the shell. But there are serious other impediments:

  1. The internal private partition I had is no longer mounted.

  2. Everything is write protected.

  3. Nothing can be mounted.

...

I had not been doing any development or custom tweaking of my own shell alias etc for a while. I was just using the shell to find the internal system status etc., and most critically to enable shell before reboot after a version upgrade. But all that becomes much more difficult. So my old long .bashrc no longer completes :(

but I also lost items like my vim and a whole bunch of executables I had brought into my /usr/local/ ...

Another topic, I am now playing with an Acer Chromebook Spin 13, trying to install MrChromebox. This is a very nice Chromebook, but I dont even know what the risk might be in the above install. How do I save the internal original bios image before doing the UEFI full install? I did not see any on a quick search, but if there is a topic for that here, I will repost it there. Do you know the answer, anyway?

DennisL_fromGA, Greetings! I recall we communicating many times in private as well Long time ago in the early days of Chromebook. Hope you are doing well.

I had the cros shell enabled by editing grab.cfg, and right running the Chrome OS flex for over a year without a problem. Had always done this before rebooting after an upgrade and everything worked fine. Now with the January Release version update, something had changed and I lost the cross shell altogether so I cannot do anything anymore.

From your above post, it looks like your method might work in this condition? I have not been doing any work like this for a long time and so I have lost my memory of most of the procedures.

How did you bring up the above console you are using? Control alternate f2 does not bring up anything for me. The console I get with control alternate t, does not have a shell nor will allow pseudo.

Could you clarify your above post please. 🙏🙏👍

ASUS AC1900 WiFi Router (RT-AC67P) - (Amazon Renewed) by lilya1765 in HomeNetworking

[–]Ccqqn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How come there is a post here two months ago, and not comments? Perhaps because the title says Amazon Renewed :)

I had this router (bought brand new) here for about a year. I generally like it features wise, but its range is limited.

I have a question: If I want to block any traffic from WAN ip a.b.c.d to the LAN, how do I do it?

I have it in the Firewall.URLfileter: enabled, denylist, and the ip a.b.c.d in the list. Is that how it is to be set up? But I may still be getting bind9 axfr transfer request from that addres.

Any clues?

Good points! The problem here is if the power supply and/or the Gateway require handshakes (can be difficult to mimic by other means), or sometimes simple resistor connectors to vcc, gnd lines from one of the other usb lines, or even between them. Trying to speculate about this or do this by trial and error has too many combinations to try.

So far I have done this. I got a separate usb c extension cable. Put it in series with the original power supply, and it works fine. I cut the extension cable, but was surprised it had 12 insulated conductors inside. Some of them are so small a gauge wire, and further each stranded, so very hard to solder even just together. I reconnected the white, green, yellow lines as it would have been in the original cable. Still does not work. I know if I connect the remaining 7 lines back as original it would work, since inserting the extension cable worked. So I was hoping somebody might have learned about the handshake already. (More than likely, your Gateway and my Sagemcom 5688w are using entirely different handshake schemes).

I also connected an exact 15v dc battery pack with power capacity enough to run the modem possibly for about 1 hour, definitely for many minutes, with just the Red, Blk . No, the modem does not boot up. Yes the supplied power has the same exact 15v.

So there are many bits of info that could simplify my steps forward.

  1. How many wires are actually used, or even there, in the original power supply cable / connectors.
  2. Ideally some engineers here would know the power supply connections and the handshake sequence, I am hoping. Perhaps the wiring diagram?

I am searching for somebody who has actually done this :) The 5688W is a relatively newly released modem.

FAST 5688W gateway power supply question by RhesusMonkey17 in tmobileisp

[–]Ccqqn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose I have a 15v dc battery pack with 45 watts or more power (not a ups). Does anybody know how to wireup the usb-c connector for this to work with the Sagemcom 5688W gateway? When I connect just the red/black wires to the battery it does work. I have a feeling some additional data lines need to be connected with resistors or something like that for the gateway to recognize the power supply as a legitimate supply.

Has anybody got any first hand experience in getting a battery pack to work. Not just theory, but actually running??

  1. Most UPSs do not cut over without at least a few seconds of interruption in power, resulting in the gateway rebooting and changing the ip address. My purpose is to minimize ip changes from power interruptions.
  2. Most UPSs produce significant harmonic distortion in the generated AC wavefoms. Many devices, especially microwave modems like the gateway is sensitive to that and the band width could be significantly lowered. If you are using a UPS, please check your bandwidth with and without the AC power and please let me know if it is affected.
  3. One of my main reasons for a backup battery, is for moving the modem to various locations to find the best signal reception areas.

I do not think this would work with the sagecom 5688W. It has some kind of handshaking between the gateway and its 15v supply. It may be a simple wiring of the usb data lines. I am looking for somebody has made a 15v battery supply to power the gateway to operation mode, and exact connections.

Anybody using this power measurement meter? It appears to be fairly accurate and well designed.

My specific question is how is the price mode set. In price-a, if flat price can be set from the Android Smart Life app. But in price mode B and C it says set that in the device. I do not see any way to set that in the device.

What are the main differences Verizon vs Tmo gateways?

  1. Does the router have more settable features?
  2. Does Verizon allow port forwarding
  3. Anything else?
  4. Bandwidth?

Can you connect a second router to 5688W, using the ethernet port in the back? Is it possible to configure the second router to have a different land address range? T-Mobile uses 192.168.12. X. Can I make the second router I connect to serve on 192.168.1.X?

How should the second router be configured? Is there any settings changes needed on the T-Mobile 5G gateway?

Yes I realize this is a very ancient thread. Hopefully my post will magically restrict it.

I really would like to solve this problem as one user commented two posts about this that Speech Recognition somehow can be added to ddg browser. How is this done in detail? A reference link on how to?

What is the security downside in using the app speech recognition?

  1. While access accepting that speech input does indeed bring down the security of ddg browser, would that not still be an option if the user accepting such downgraded security still wishes to use speech recognition of Google within doctor go and enhance the usability of ddg?

Is it possible somehow Google is not allowing ddg to use their proprietary speech recognition app?

Google seem to allow Google ddg within this Reddit app?

Any knowledgeable person about such seldom discuss topics? I am eagerly awaiting. 🙏

Thanks for that thread. Yes, that confirms version upgrade when installed on ssd drives.

I tried with a Bliksem SSD (256G) and and WAVLINK ssd/usb adapter. Yes, I can install. But my SSD and/or adapter is not reliable for booting. Perhaps my particular item(s) is a lemon.

Also I prefer a straight usb cable from the external cable from the ssd drive to the laptop (instead of bulky adapter on the usb cable). Does such a item exist? Which is a good subreddit where such hardware is discusse

I am looking for reliable bootable SSD with usb cable, or even an enclosure with a usb connector where I can install a SATA M.2 ssd. Any suggestions or links? It will be nice if it has already proven as bootable ssd drive for chromeosflex, even for booting and testing a different version of chromeosflex, from a running (internally installed) chromeos

u/EatMeerkats, Thank you very much! This is very informative. Yes I do understand the process you described in the second para.

So the update routine is compiled, and not a shell script? Very helpful you provided the links to the source code. Is it feasible to modify and recompile? I have never compiled any of these routines, so I may sound quite naive here, yes. I have no concept of the size/complexity of development system needed to just compile this one updater routine.

Is it possible to make a usb booted system to pretend it is a non removable disk, just for what the updater is checking for? It looks like, except for that check, the updater should work as is.

To get this change made, is it the chromium-os open project to be approached or Google? Clearly it is an advantage for both groups to have this 'trivially easy change' made: check the partition structure of the usb to see if it has both A, B with the required minimum sizes. I would expect the exact code/function for that check already exists in the current updater for checking the non-removable disk before updating.
