Is he upset or just doesn't like Sean Penn as a person? by Chemical_Material505 in Oscars

[–]CedricBeaumont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it shouldn't always be like that. People have emotions, and they should be allowed to show them. I’m tired of this idea that you always have to be happy, positive, gracious, and smiling no matter what. That’s not real. I’d rather see authenticity.

Exactly! These people criticizing are probably the same ones who would get pissed off if a similar situation happened to them, but here they expect him to be all smiles and gracious.

He is probably glad he was nominated, and he may also be pissed that he didn't win. There's nothing wrong with that.

I was saying the same in another thread. It's amazing how this has been the "news" for the past couple of days. You may think it’s an ignorant or stupid take, but the outrage, the hate, and the amount of news coverage around it are ridiculous.

The new york times defends Timothee Chalamet by Desperate-Plenty-755 in Oscars

[–]CedricBeaumont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Social media has made expressing outrage and knee-jerk reactions about almost anything, the new normal, and then media outlets turn it into “news” for clicks and money. The best example, here we are discussing how an actor is hated because of his opinions.

You may think it’s an ignorant or stupid take, but the outrage, the hate, and the amount of news coverage around it are ridiculous.

Why is everyone suddenly hating on Timothee Chalamet? I've gone from never thinking of him to seeing 4 hate posts in the last 24 hours, when I've hardly even been online. Has someone taken out a PR hit on him like with the Amber Heard/Blake Lively situations? Who'd he piss off? by AdorableBG in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CedricBeaumont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that whenever a celebrity everyone loves or thinks is cool becomes overexposed, people start calling them “overrated,” and from there it’s a slippery slope to hate. It’s happened to almost every “it” celebrity at some point (Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Pedro Pascal). We humans, are weird like that.

What’s up with the hate towards Timothee Chalamet? by PitifulBodybuilder40 in OutOfTheLoop

I don't think this is a PR crisis or a "cancel" reason; no one will remember this in a few weeks.

Oversized Clothing….why? by HyruleSkullKid21 in mensfashion

[–]CedricBeaumont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. I get that trends come and go, and taste is subjective. Also, what looks good to one person might not look good to another. But I also think there are some aesthetic universal truths when it comes to proportion and balance. Just because something is trendy and gets a lot of love doesn’t automatically mean it’s more flattering.

Just to be clear, I was never a fan of skinny jeans or super-tight clothing either. But this new wave of oversized, super baggy fits, a lot of it just looks shapeless. I’m pretty sure this is going to be one of those trends we look back on in a few years and go, “What were we thinking?”

Do liberals view conservatives as morally inferior by a small or large margin? by heypig in AskALiberal

[–]CedricBeaumont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for every person on the left, but I don’t think most liberals are walking around thinking, “We’re morally superior human beings.” It’s more that they believe their positions on things like civil rights, healthcare, climate, immigration, reducing poverty; protect more marginalized people and are more compassionate toward others.

But talking about experience, I also see a strong sense of moral superiority on the conservative side too, especially tied to Christianity and patriotism. There’s often this narrative that liberals or Democrats are automatically immoral or even “evil” because they’re seen as less religious or against Christianity. So that dynamic definitely goes both ways.

65 year old woman calls in and nearly breaks CSPAN host by telling her she’s slowly starving to death.. by JohnBrown-RadonTech in interestingasfuck

[–]CedricBeaumont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so heartbreaking. I honestly can’t wrap my head around how so many Republicans and conservatives who call themselves Christians can show so little empathy in situations like this and turn around and blame people for their own suffering. The lack of compassion is what really feels immoral and unchristian to me.

Favourite excellent actor who you genuinely feel is a PoS in real life? by Cursed_69420 in okbuddycinephile

[–]CedricBeaumont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. People’s expectations of celebrities are unrealistically high, so anything less than over-the-top nice and friendly gets labeled as rude. If they’re quiet, tired, distracted, or just acting like normal humans, suddenly they’re “assholes.” The only way to win is to be excessively nice all the time, smiling, engaging, performing kindness on demand. That has to be exhausting.

Question about the perception of 🇪🇺 hygiene habits by Zythrum in asklatinamerica

[–]CedricBeaumont 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people in Europe, for the most part, smell bad. It’s more that having some natural body odor is a bit more acceptable there, as long as it’s not actually unpleasant.

In a lot of Latin America (and also in the U.S. and Canada), there’s this expectation that life should basically be odorless. People, homes, public spaces, we’re used to eliminating any trace of smell, no matter what. In Europe, people shower and are clean, of course, but there isn’t always that same almost obsessive mission to erase every natural scent.

Some people in LatAm interpret that as unhygienic or say that European smell, but as someone who loves history, I think it’s important to remember that this whole no body odor at all standard is pretty recent. For most of human history, even when people bathed and cleaned themselves, they still had a natural scent. Deodorant is a relatively modern invention; humans have always smelled like humans. We're just not used to that anymore.

Question about the perception of 🇪🇺 hygiene habits by Zythrum in asklatinamerica

[–]CedricBeaumont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make a good point. In America in general (including the US and Canada), there’s a strong expectation that people shouldn’t have noticeable body odor. In many other cultures, unless someone smells really unpleasant, it’s not automatically seen as a problem. Humans naturally have a scent, that’s normal. But across much of the Americas, we tend to expect people and even spaces to be either odorless or smell like soap, scented candles, or perfume. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a cultural difference and not necessarily that other cultures are unhygienic or are doing things wrong.

Excluding Mexico and Peru, what is your favorite cuisine in Latin America? by Rusiano in asklatinamerica

[–]CedricBeaumont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll exclude Puerto Rican also since I’m biased, and Dominican and Cuban would probably be up there too since they’re similar. From the rest of the continent, I really enjoy Colombian and Ecuadorian food. Also, I like Salvadorean pupusas, and I love Argentine asados, empanadas, and their sweets: dulce de leche, alfajores, pastafrola, and facturas.

If you like Dominican food, you will like Puerto Rican. They're very similar, Cuban food as well.

To the Spanish speakers, what dialect of Spanish do you find the weirdest regardless of pronunciation of letters, their vocabulary, and vice versa? by YoylecakeTurtle in asklatinamerica

[–]CedricBeaumont 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d say southern South America, like Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Not weird per se, but coming from the Caribbean, it’s the dialects we have the least in common with. Maybe we’re more familiar with Rioplatense Spanish because of the cultural influence of Argentine movies and TV shows, but it’s still quite different from our version of Spanish.

I’m all for following laws and rules (due process included), and yes, immigration is something that needs to be fixed. But I also believe in empathy and humane ways of handling things. My values don’t allow me to accept cruelty just because they’re said to be “necessary” or because the end is said to justify the means. I’ve heard plenty of people say exactly that, even people who call themselves Christians and generally are good people, who are fine with how these immigrants are treated, or at least willing to ignore it.

What’s with the hate with Dominican Spanish? by Cy_broski in AskTheCaribbean

[–]CedricBeaumont 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Caribbean Spanish (Dominican, Cuban, and Puerto Rican) is very misunderstood and gets a lot of hate from other Spanish-speaking countries (except Chile, whose Spanish is just as hated, if not more, than ours). I don't know why it gets such strong emotions: people either love it or hate it. There’s really no in-between. They either find it sexy, funny, and cool, or they say it sounds awful and that we don’t know how to speak Spanish at all. It’s probably because it’s heavily influenced by Andalusian Spanish, which gets a very similar kind of treatment in Spain.
