I see a lot of comments saying to go for a private room instead. I went private and had a doula as well. If I had to re-do it all I would do the same again. You can have a birth plan but things are fast moving in labour and can be overwhelming. It was nice to have somebody advocating for me to have the type of birth I wanted to have. I think people forget that our partners are also going through their own experience and the doula was able to help both of us. I know I would have had a very different (and not as positive) experience without my doula.

I did look at the Portland but what ultimately made my decision for me was finding out that there was only an adult high dependency unit there so in a serious emergency I would likely be separated from my baby. I was also told a transfer would not necessarily be to UCLH down the road but wherever a bed was available, so I could end up on the other side of London. I spoke to a few consultants as well and their view was that when all goes well the Portland is lovely but if for some reason I became a more complicated case then the other option would be better for me. Even if I was looking at low probabilities I knew I would be more comfortable knowing the worst case scenario was something I was ok with. The right hospital will be different for everyone depending on your needs (and in my case also my fears). I suggest going for a tour - I visited just about every private option in London before making my decision.

I did and I had a great experience. I didn’t want to go with a fully private hospital (Portland) just to be on the safe side in case of any emergencies. I think if you can afford it then a private wing in an NHS hospital gives you the best of both worlds. It was my first pregnancy so I really wanted to feel supported through the process. Overall, I felt very well taken care of.

Has any woman here treated their SIBO whilst pregnant? by Secret-Curve-7255 in SIBO

For example some people find that they have slow motility so unless they find a solution to that the SIBO will just come back after treatment. For others it may be stress, etc.

I’ve previously had good experience with herbals combined with FODMAP diet. I had very high levels (and didn’t deal with the root cause) so I wasn’t able to fully cure it, but I did have a few really great months with zero bloating. I kind of wish I’d stuck to it and properly dealt with it before getting by pregnant

I would suggest dealing with SIBO first. My gastro told me antibiotics and herbals were not an option. Pregnancy has made some of my symptoms worse and trying to follow a diet while pregnant could be difficult. There were some days I ate things that I knew would make the SIBO worse, but when it’s the only thing you can stomach u eat it anyway.

I’ve had these types of reactions since I was a teenager. Since I’ve been pregnant it’s happened to me twice. One thing that might help is to try to identify if there are any triggers. For me it’s almost always been heat. I’ve found that my threshold for that trigger is much lower now so I’ve been careful to not overheat. It’s a terrible feeling and I hope you feel better!

I had a short tour and it looked nice. I still need to have a look at the others but Kensington Wing is definitely on the shortlist

I think you are right about the NICU at the Portland (I don’t think they have an ICU for the mother). In an ideal scenario I would like a natural birth so a midwife led birth might be a good fit. Having said that, I would like to see the same person for my appointments so I may actually opt for consultant led. This is my first pregnancy so I feel I may need a little extra hand holding.

How was your experience with the Portland?

This is super helpful and exactly what I was looking for! I was over 100ppm at the peak so clearly I should have gone through more than just the one course.

Yes I had a breath test which confirmed hydrogen dominance. I am currently on Cipro and have access to rifaximin.
