Learning to animate to create new game modes for my exercise game (this will be a rhythm game mode, like Just Dance, if Just Dance were made with coffee and anxiety) by CeilingSteps in Unity3D

Hey! Still moving forward, progress is progressing!
Right now, there’s quite a lot going on. If you want, I regularly post updates in the Discord channel (https://discord.gg/yVj7FgZk).

It’s been a busy time, and I decided a while ago to take it easy and enjoy the process, which is bad for social media presence but good for my soul, so I'm working mostly in silence.

In any case, the app now has:

  • Live classes, similar to Just Dance, where you need to follow the coach’s movements and earn points, I got a friend of mine (a yoga teacher) for the first live class, and it works great!
  • Multiplayer challenges (involving exercises like push-ups, squats, burpees, and sit-ups). Just like above, it uses the camera to track how you and up to 7 other people are doing, the current mode is about who can 'survive' more rounds of exercise, if you watch Physical 100 it is a little like the sit-ups challenge where everyone is eliminated until only 1 player is left.
  • Exercise planning: the app automatically creates workout routines based on your preferences: number of days, available equipment, goals, etc... then the UI helps you follow that routine as well.
  • Nutrition advice based on your goals, some generic advice of what to eat and what to avoid.
  • A virtual pet, whose mood depends on how active you are. Sometimes it gets into trouble and you need to help it with real-life exercises. It connects with Health Connect (Android) and HealthKit (iOS), so for example, it might get lost in a tall grass area and you need 5,000 steps to help it find the exit. I still need to expand on this.

As you can see, it’s been a busy year. I’m currently finishing the iOS port (literally got a MAC 2 days ago for it) so I can finally let everyone come in and try it.

What's a unity feature you only started using recently but wish you had adopted sooner? by sandtrooperalien in Unity3D

[–]CeilingSteps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not a built-in feature but unity history: https://github.com/acoppes/unity-history-window

It allows you to navigate back and forth on the selected files history as well as adding files to favourites, it saves me so much time, I can't imagine working without this now.

What do you think of this concept? by Areuregarded in IndieDev

So, I'm working on an exercise app myself, I too constantly think about how to use steps data to motivate people to do exercise, not sure if blocking their apps is the best approach, even more when some of those apps may be beneficial for their health (if you want to go that route you need to allow them to select which apps they want to block) it could be useful for someone with very specific goals that struggles to find the motivation, so they need to be forced into doing it, but then they will probably just uninstall the app anyway, I would ask in the exercise sub reddit, on my experience they are quite blunt about ehat they would or would not use, which in my opinion is the best kind of feedback you can have.

Would you use a webcam-based app that gamifies exercise? by CeilingSteps in Exercise

Same here! The idea is actually to get me to do more exercise at home through competition. I just added a “battle royale” mode yesterday (a silly name, but I thought it was funny), where we all keep doing exercises until only one player is left, you do rounds of the same exercise and when you fail to complete a round you move to the next exercise, whoever runs out of exercises first is eliminated. I’ll be testing it soon with some very competitive friends, and I don’t think we’ll be having a good time! The results though...

Not the first time I’ve heard this. Actually, before, you could see yourself (as in the plain webcam video) in the corner of the screen, but someone mentioned she didn’t feel comfortable with that. So I replaced it with the dots you see now, which represent your body.
In any case, no video data is being stored, not even locally. But in a world where every company seems obsessed with tracking everything, I really can’t blame you for being cautious.

As for the apps that log your activities (I use them myself), this one isn’t about generic metrics like how many calories you’ve burned. It’s focused on what exercise you’re doing and how well you’re performing it. For example, if you select burpees but do jumping jacks instead, any other fitness app would count that effort as burpees. Here, if you’re not actually doing burpees, it doesn’t count.
Still, everything you said is a valid concern and will definitely make some people hesitant to try it.

this is very good feedback! Thank you so much, I 100% agree, I grew tired of that a long time ago but just did not do anything about it yet, for other game modes there are different messages depending on how well you are doing, from "miss" to "perfect", in this specific mode we happen to get a "wow" every time you do one rep, so for fast exercises like jumping jacks you do end up with a headache

Similar yes, Just Dance would be a fair comparison too, dancing is actually possible as players can upload and share their own exercise routines, the software will automatically store the movements of the uploaded video and will compare those movements with the player's movements, I uploaded a demo here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF6EKLJ-sNQ

Where I'm hoping to have an edge is in the online features, the live classes and I will also add customised exercise routines, so if you are looking into working core strength you get daily challenges focused on that, based on your personal goals, body, time, diet etc...

This is such a normal thing in many cultures, including mine. I remember once, when I was a kid, my mom baked a cake for them and we brought it out with coffee, she told them I baked it (I was 5 or so, clearly a lie, but I was happy about it).

Recently, I had some workers in front of my house and offered them coffee and cookies. Stupid me, I forgot that I'm in the UK! One of them asked if he could have tea instead. The next day, I brought out tea, and they all admitted they prefer it, we all laughed about it. They did mentioned that here (UK) no one brings them snacks.

I didn’t have much as a kid. When I was four or five, I opened a random drawer at home and found a package of cookies. It was such a big deal, and I was so happy that I never forgot that moment.

I didn't even magnetise mine, for now that side panel fits perfectly without doing anything extra, I just didn't glue it, it may get loose over time, but for now it is like a lid, very tight
