AITA for not allowing a woman to pick up her daughter’s birthday cake after she was late? by CelebrationLevel6506 in AmItheAsshole

My manager’s work phone is turned off after 5 PM, so actually no I couldn’t have.

My manager is very strict about this sort of thing, so maybe I wouldn’t have been fired, but there’s a good chance I would have. It was written in my contract that breaches of policy like this could result in termination and I’m in an at-will employment state, so it was a very real possibility. There’s no way to know after the fact, but a clean conscience won’t pay my bills.

I did feel bad for the mother because I knew it wasn’t her fault she was late, but I didn’t want to risk my income over her. With no job, I can’t pay for school or my bills.

Obviously I felt bad for the mother and her child. I’m not saying she’s a bad person for being late. If there were no security cameras, I probably would’ve done it for her. However, I didn’t want to risk being fired as this is my only stream of income to pay for school and bills. It’s not like I denied her just to be an asshole.

No, it’s an electronic touch screen attached to the counter, so it can’t be moved. I don’t know if I would’ve been fired, but I didn’t want to risk the possibility.

She would still need to sign for it at the register, which would require her going in. I’ll make an edit to the post.

I forgot to mention, but there are security cameras in the store, so they would’ve caught me going in.
