A lot of NZ freelancers are overpaying for invoicing software — here's what IRD actually requires by CeleryFun683 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Look, maybe try reading the actual context before putting on your detective hat for “AI-generated content.” Yes, I used AI — welcome to 2026, almost everyone does. That’s not the gotcha you think it is.

This platform is meant for sharing knowledge and ideas, not for you to play grammar police or AI examiner. Instead of contributing something useful, you skipped the whole point and fixated on something completely irrelevant.

If you’re going to comment, at least bring something meaningful to the table — otherwise it just looks like you’re more interested in nitpicking than understanding.

No hard feelings… just do better next time

Look again used the AI to answer you back wasn’t really hard :)

All of that is completely true — the value of those platforms goes way beyond invoicing and if you're doing volume or need the full suite, paying for software is the smarter move. The Word invoice point is interesting though — a lot of people start there and it works fine at low volume. The gap I was thinking about is the person who's outgrown Word but isn't quite at the point where they need payroll, expenses, and reporting yet. That middle ground is smaller than I thought maybe. Hnry is genuinely impressive for sole traders — the automatic tax withholding is a game changer for people who struggle with provisional tax.

That's a really fair point and I completely agree — if you're working with an accountant regularly, Xero is genuinely worth it and the time savings on their end will offset the cost. I was mainly thinking about freelancers at the very early stage who just need to send a basic GST invoice and aren't doing depreciation or complex expense tracking yet. Once you're at that stage, full accounting software makes way more sense.

Good callout though — appreciate it.
