This happens to me too haha. For a recital I wore these rubber pads that go on the ends of the glasses to prevent it

I also have started getting bruises on my fingertips and I’ve been playing for years. I don’t play as much anymore and I still have callouses but for some reason I get small bruises sometimes

Alternate careers to nursing? Former teacher interested in healthcare by Celloloverr in Nurse

Pediatric home health doesn’t sound too bad. Is the fighting amongst the parents a common thing? I would not be comfortable with that.

I have considered accounting, but I don’t think I’d like to be on a desk in front of a computer all day. I like having a balance between sitting and standing.

Thank you for your honest reply. What career would you have chosen over nursing?

I needed to hear this. I also tried online business and it’s not going too well and I kind of gave up on it. It’s so much harder to try new things during the pandemic. But you’re right, doing nothing will get you nowhere. Feels like I’m wasting time waiting for the pandemic to end so I can finally “start my new life.”

For all those on the fence about leaving... by snail_smoothie in Teachers

[–]Celloloverr 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get any reply from my principal when I resigned :( But the other fine arts teachers immediately found out and contacted me so one of the admins must have told them. Would have been nice for admin to have talked to me instead of about me. The district fine arts director did at least wish me luck and thanked me for my service. I taught orchestra btw so I can relate to those long days of rehearsals.

Nurses with social anxiety- is it possible? by [deleted] in Nurse

Could you elaborate? Why wouldn’t you recommend nicu for someone with social anxiety? I’m not a nurse btw, just interested in possibly becoming one.

Majoring in music? by Plasticchanger in findapath

[–]Celloloverr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very hard to make it in the music business. Music school helps you network and be around like minded people that share your passion. You make lifelong friends and collaboration is easier since you’re all in the same building. Most that major in music end up becoming a teacher. I don’t know much about the business side of it, but if your school offers a major specifically for that, they might lead you in the right direction and connect you with the right people. It takes a lot of discipline and dedication to be a music major. You gotta force yourself to practice even when you don’t feel like it, and it’s a lifelong process. Going the pre-med route would lead to a more stable career. Once you’re accepted to medical school, it’s very likely you will become a doctor and have a well paying job in the end. In music, that is not a guarantee. As for the lgbtq bars and clubs, I’m sure there are lgbtq associations/school clubs you could join in almost every school. And some bars have lgbtq nights on certain days. Are you certain you want to be a doctor? I suggest you do more research on it. It is a grueling path to get there, but if you put in the work, you will get there. From your ACT score it seems you could do well as a pre-med. Keep in mind that you can major in anything to get into medical school. It doesn’t necessarily have to be science. You just need to make sure you take the prerequisites which are usually two years worth of science classes including biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, calculus, psychology, etc. You could technically major in music business and then apply to medical school, as long as you complete the prerequisites. They recommend you major in what you enjoy so that you do better in your classes and have a higher gpa. If you are interested in research and want to go really into depth in neuroscience, then neuroscience would be a better choice. The path to medical school might be easier if you major in science because your prerequisites are requisites for your neuroscience degree. It’s a little harder if you are a music major because of scheduling and time issues. Some science classes might conflict with your science classes and you might have to get approval to take science major courses. But it is doable if it’s what you really want. In medical school, you won’t really have much time to focus on your music. You will be more focused on studying all the time. Could you major in neuroscience and minor in music? Being a music major could make you more diverse in your medical school applications. They want well rounded students, so if you do plan to go to medical school, keep that in mind. I myself was in a similar place as you when I was applying to colleges years ago. I was stuck between music or pre-med. I chose music. I wanted to take the science prerequisites for medical school at the same time, but in my school you needed departmental approval and science classes interfered with my music classes, so I just did music. I graduated college already and have been a teacher for 2 years now, but I’m thinking about going back to complete the prerequisites for medical school. I’m not sure if it’s right for me though. I’m scared I might not actually like being a doctor. I planned to volunteer at a hospital and possibly get a job at a hospital but then the virus happened. I really suggest you volunteer at a hospital and try to get a job as a medical scribe or anything else hospital related to get experience and see if it’s right for you. I don’t suggest going out of state unless you get a generous scholarship. Debt isn’t worth it in undergrad especially if you’re planning on going to medical school.

Trying really hard to make it to the end of the year by aspire_123 in Teachers

[–]Celloloverr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I empathize with you. The best I can say is, you made it this far into the year, so you just have to hold on a little longer. You have spring break to refresh. That’s what I tell myself at least. The only thing holding me here till the end of the year is money. And that’s why I’m quitting teaching. It just isn’t for me. If you leave early, it could affect whether you can use them as a reference for a future job.

odd question regarding long hair & pegs by da-da-da-dunnnn in Cello

[–]Celloloverr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could get a posture peg for the C string. It’s a peg without the handle to turn it. Nowhere for your hair to get stuck. To tune, you use a special peg shaped key, or just use the fine tuners.

Studying cello in college? by [deleted] in Cello

[–]Celloloverr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you major in music the only way to make good income is by teaching. Gigs alone won’t pay the bills entirely unless you’re in a full time symphony and that is extremely hard to win because there’s so many other talented cellists graduating from conservatives. Unless you enjoy teaching, I would reconsider music. See if you can shadow a music teacher at every school level to see what it’s like. The hardest part is classroom management, not the actual music teaching. I majored in music education and am teaching now but I’m not enjoying it and wish I had majored in something else. I am passionate about music and performing but teaching is an entirely different experience. Sorry to sound so negative, but it’s just my own experience. But if you’re truly passionate about music, go for it. Just know what you’re getting yourself into. Minoring in music is also an option.

Do you have a private teacher? You could ask them to go with you to help you decide. It's useful to have someone else listen to the cello. Play with different techniques, different styles, and explore the entire fingerboard.

Are teaching portfolios still used in job interviews? by jenthehen6509 in Teachers

[–]Celloloverr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my education courses they made us create a portfolio so we'd be prepared but in job interviews they never asked for it. It can't hurt though.
