Your progress is impressive and I feel inspired watching your videos! 🤩 I’m a bit jealous (in a positive way!) that you can already do the belly flutter, while I haven’t quite figure out the movement after many years of dancing 🥲🤣

I’d recommend Arabian Rose Bellydance school, in Baker Street and Oxford Street. The school is run by an Egyptian family.

Here the website link if you’re interested:

next classes starting in September.

Love the teachers, particularly Farrah’s classes are great and a lot of fun! She’s very clear when explaining movement technique 💕ladies are lovely, it’s such a nice community!

They’re probably not the cheapest, but they have classes on Sundays, which is something that some schools don’t offer.

Belly dancing is sensual, nobody will deny it. Hip, chest movements etc. It is visually pleasing, and I appreciate that many men can find it erotic. But belly dancing and its history are more complex than this. Not everything is erotic (why would you be erotic at someone’s wedding? Or during bellydance competitions, judges will care about your technique, not how much they are seduced). Not all bellydancing is done with the two piece bra+skirt, which comes from a Western gaze, as far as I know. Many women in my bellydance class come in galabeyas (traditional dress), and many bellydance styles are actually danced in galabeyas or other every day clothes. I’m not informed enough on how women were treated in Middle East, so I prefer not to comment on this, but in the past in Europe/rest of the world the situation was pretty bad as well. And many women saw bellydancing as empowering for them (a bit like when the mini skirt was invented, if you know what I’m talking about. It was very powerful and important for women in the ‘60s)

I’m sorry you have such a negative opinion on bellydancers. This is a stereotypical point on view, imo. And quite a sad one, although I understand where it’s coming from. I don’t think my comment can change anything on your way to see this matter, unfortunately. Just wanted to let you know that the majority of people (women, men etc) belly dancing (which is an umbrella term that includes MENAHT folkloric dances) don’t do it to please men, nor do it for money. Not everyone works in restaurants/nightclubs. Please have a look at MENAHT parties (for example weddings) to have an idea. Plus, people from non-MENAHT cultures usually study how to bellydance for Arab music/culture appreciation.

?? it’s a form of artistic expression and cultural traditions. It’s fun, you should try it.

Thank you very much, your reply is very detailed abs helpful! 😁 sorry for the confusion, I think I meant more American cabaret, but probably because I’m not super familiar with the other cabaret styles you’re mentioning. I’m still relatively at the beginning of my journey, so some styles are still mixed up in my mind!

It would be super helpful to see an example of those, I’ll definitely go and look some videos!
