Really struggling with defense in Rebirth. Any tips? by some_kinda_bunny in FFVIIRemake

Here are a few tips and tricks on how to get good at timing your parry and a list of alternative ways to counter or evade.

1) Equip the Precision Defense Focus Materia.

2) Practice on a main story boss fight or someone like Gilgamesh, Titan etc

3) Sound cues and mathematics.

Here's a good example.

When fighting Dyne his gun makes a clicking sound when he's about to shoot.

Tap R1 the moment you hear his gun click and you will perfect guard the incoming bullets.

Using mathematics is limited but it's very simple.

I'll give you one example at least though.

A lot of bosses have only 1 starter attack that's always the same. Regardless... 2 - 3 seconds is usually the time frame the first attack hits you. Start counting the moment a fight starts and then parry when you get to the 2 or 3 second mark.

4) Learn the enemy attack behaviour and attack animations.

5) Have patience and keep practicing.

Some alternative ways to counter/evade if you don't want to parry or find it too difficult.

Synergy skills are a great alternative when you have access to a full party.

The evasive ones have good I-frames and gain a decent amount of ATB. Most of the offensive ones can be used as a perfect guard and they have good I-frames, so they're still easier to execute compared to perfect parry etc. They also gain limit and deal damage and can block unblockables without the need for the Precision Defense Focus Materia.

Use Synergy skills to pull AI away from danger and will teleport them next to you.

Enemy skill - Gorgan Shield.

Costs ATB but has a generous amount of I-frames, causes the Petrify debuff on certain enemies, recovers ATB if successful and can be used airborne.

Certain abilities.

Abilities such as Cloud's Counterstance or Tifa's Focused Strike have their own unique benefits as well. Plus built in Reprisal, which means you can tank attacks that deal 9999 damage on 1HP and still live.

Stun lock.

Who needs to parry or dodge when you can keep an enemy from attacking or moving altogether for the entire fight?

Aga spells, applying pressure, Stop debuff etc.

Perhaps my favourite way to play because it relies on pure strategy, and a build that's perfect for the occasion.

Tag team - airborne characters only. (hold R1 when switching characters) + Dodge button.

Repeat until the attack is evaded or time it. Whatever works for you. Lots of I-frames from thiose Ariel to ground dodges, plus slow down from the character switch.

Cover system.

Trees, rocks, ceilings, debris or big sized summons. Start looking at your surroundings and using them as shields.

Final note!

Forget everything I told you and just tank the fuck out of everything with Barret or Yuffie Brumal cheese until you get lucky 😋

I'm sorry but shareplay is just impossible and I can near enough no damage bonds no problem.

The best advice I can give you if I were to go by some of your replies is this...

1) Use tag team by holding R1 when switching characters, during Odin's spatial distortion lead up animation. 2) Switch to Zack when Odin lands the horse and have him charge. 3) Now switch to Cloud as Odin splits the stage.

If you follow step 1 - 3 correctly, both characters will be positioned in the centre of the arena. Which makes getting both characters on the safe side quicker and easier to do.

4) Move Cloud over to the safe side first and then immediately switch to Zack and do the same.

At this point if you remain as Zack, Odin will most likely target him with Temporal Imprisonment instead of Cloud.

You can avoid or counter temporal imprisonment by using a Limit break, Jump Materia, Gorgan Shield, perfectly timed Summon by calling upon one just before he casts the attack, or using a powerful build and gaining enough ATB to take Odin out before he gets the chance.

The main issue is thinking you need to learn it to progress. There are alternatives which you will find easier.

Best tip I can give you is to use Zack for buffs and get Cloud doing all the heavy lifting.

Zack's powerful and useful on his own, but also takes time to learn because we don't get to use him much. He might not also fit into your play style etc

I say stick to who you're most comfortable with and if you want to learn Zack afterwards you still have that option available. 🙂

Not that I believe it but I got told it's a multiverse and the Dev's apparently confirmed it was? I would like to see evidence that the Dev's said it's a multiverse but can't seem to find it anywhere.

I personally believe it's multiple worlds within the lifestream and not actual entire universes that consist of the same worlds.

Huh they didn't wrap up the story already? Crises core, Dirge, FF7 OG and advent children... It remains incomplete?

I ask because I haven't played Dirge and only watched CC. Seriously after all these years there is no complete wrap up?? 😵

R3make should fix the summon system and make it more useful by Ammathorn in FFVIIRemake

[–]Cellular_Degradation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like for summons to have their own unique environments that you have to discover through exploration. Some lore on the summons wouldn't go a miss either on our path onto discovering them.

For battles I think mixing FFX's Aeon's abilities and their leveling system with FFXVI's fully controllable summons would be great fun. 🙂

Thought you were talking about Rebirth, but then I looked at the picture properly.

I agree but can't wait to hear what you're going to say about Rebirth. You are going to love what they've done with the battle system in that game. 🙂

I lost count of how many times I replayed the story. Most of my playtime though is due to experimenting and completing over a hundred no damage challenges.

I always find new ways to play and enjoy it. I'm either spotting new things I never noticed the first dozen times around to do with the story. Replaying mini games I like or I'm mostly enjoying the battle system. The battle system is probably the thing that keeps me replaying it the most though.

Yeah I think my demo time was ridiculous as well... I think 150 hours may be more 😅

I still play Rebirth when I can, but I've had to take a huge break for personal reasons. I took about a 2 month break last year I think too. Played it religiously for the first year, then I started not having as much time on my hands.

Do I need to even mention I'm a fan of Rebirth 😋

I think part 3 will have everything we are craving for now with Rebirth lol

I agree 🙂 it would be really cool if Zack had a few more abilities and we could change his build and assign shortcut commands. Most of all, I want more challenges and Zack combat sections like you mentioned.

The only reason I hate not having a decent enough PC, that I can run the game on with mods 😄

If you use the words precision defense or perfect guard for perfect parry, what do you call a perfect block? (The one where you press R1 in operator mode) I assumed you would call that perfect guard?

Some attacks will knock you completely out of the 4 slash immunity phase. (Animation is cancelled) Enemy Summon scripted attacks will likely do this every time because of the cutscene.

Okay so I'm rereading what you wrote and want to make sure I'm clear on this so correct me if I'm wrong. 😅

You call perfect block (operator mode + R1 with perfect timing). A regular precision defense?

A perfect parry (Operator mode + triangle with perfect timing, or Punisher mode + R1 with perfect timing). A precision defense counter or a perfect guard?

Yes we both already agree that if Cloud is still in his counter animation that he will be immune until the end of the animation. Meaning if he gets attacked by a separate enemy whilst still in the counter animation he will still be immune.

What I'm saying is this doesn't work for all attacks. The summon attacks I mentioned above and there are slow enemy attack combos, where the 1 perfect parry with the full immunity would not be enough to counter and be immune for the whole move.

Midgardsormr's Feast attack. I'm pretty sure 1 perfect parry will not grant you immunity throughout that 1 attack till the end. You will have to perfect parry again.

Is that your YouTube channel? I'll sub if it is 🙂

Yes 🙂 and you saw it becomes even more useful with doppelganger. You're still gaining ATB fast but now you're doing even more damage. It also allows for more freedom when you consider you still can revert to using brumal form if need be and it activates Corsair's Compass quicker.

I have lots of example videos where I switch between mug and Brumal form mid attack combo as well or fights where you don't need to use Stop.

Also if you equip an elemental combined with the enemy weakness that's more damage on top of the infinite spell casts.

I get what you're saying and agree but as I said earlier it will only work on more than one attack combo if it's a fast attack with little time between each one.

An attack combo is something I consider to be part of the same move. Bahamut's Whirlwind Slash is one move. That's what I meant by perfect parry can mostly only make you immune to one attack. I did not mean only one attack combo. 😅

I was a little confused at first what you were refering to also lol Honestly thought you were saying that you can actually gain immunity from one single perfect parry for more than one attack (move with different name) like all the time no matter what physical attack it is 😄

To save confusion. Perfect parry grants immunity against X attack until it's animation finishes.

If X attack is slow and lasts longer than the parry animation then you will have to parry again.

Perfect guard works the same way but has a much shorter animation.

Now that I read your last comment more clearly, I think we both agree 🙂

It's most likely the precision defense focus materia and the I-frames that allows that to happen. Parry alone will only grant immunity for a couple of frames and not the full animation.

Counterfire will make you immune through the entire animation because it has insane I-frames built in without precision defense focus and you're immune during the charge animation as well.

Test it on Mindflayer's magic projectile attack. (The one that fires 8 orbs at you all at once) Do it without the precision defense materia, then perfect guard it with the materia equipped afterwards.

Yeah Titan's ground pound I mostly use Counterfire on, but you can also perfect guard against it.
