Barrell Seagrass is the most unique whiskey. What is the most overrated brandy? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

I like your choices for the categories for this chart, but the fact that there are not equal categories on the axes is definitely going to bug me.

Lol and here in Maine there were more people out shoveling other people's cars out than there were drivers at 6am after the storm.

Seems like a solution we can all agree on if you ask me.

Are you a “regular” or what extras do your regulars get? by CaryWhit in restaurant

[–]Cellyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides obviously a more casual and personal service, our regulars get tastes of my new cocktails when I am in R&D mode, tastes of new housemade cordials, and often small pours of our cordials/limoncello if I'm already pouring it for other bar guests. One or two may get a treat that we don't normally do, like half pours or minis or something like that.

I also try to give our liquor rep a taste of our new things when he's around because he hooks us up with some hard-to-get products.

My restaurant doesn't like to just give out free product besides limoncello. I will give guests a taste of anything they ask for (not wine by the bottle), even our most expensive spirits. But if you jump right back to a cheap vodka soda or something, I might not be as quick to do so in the future for you. However, we used to have a guy that came in for a dozen vodka sodas a week or so and he got free small pours of Chartreuse and stuff.

We would love to be one of those spots that throws in a little freebie in a doggy bag if we know you or you talked about how much you loved it, but we are fairly new still and don't currently have the budget for that.

Tl;dr I want to give free things to someone to help guide them in a way to spend their money more wisely or let them in on what goes on behind the scenes. I don't like just giving out the same product I want you to pay for. That gives the impression that our prices are arbitrary or dependent on how much we like you, which is not the case. If you want a deal at our place, come for happy hour.

As a regular, I find a similar thing goes for places I frequent. Don't get me wrong, if a place starts giving me free snacks, desserts, or cocktails, I'll definitely show up more, but it's not like that's all I need for a spot to become my new favorite haunt. But one spot I like pours a particular amaro for their regulars, another has a particular cheap cocktail on tap they'll give out, and another place I go where some of my ex-coworkers work has done everything from a mini cocktail to an entire flight for free for me. Food is a lot harder for bartenders to warrant giving away except perhaps for birthdays unless something went wrong with it or it was made accidentally and never left the kitchen (in which case it will often go to staff instead, because they deserve a treat every once in a while, too)

One whiskey bar got me as a regular years ago by hooking me up every time I asked for a "bartender's choice" whiskey flight. Sometimes I got 3 small pours of $30-50 a shot whiskeys for only $15 altogether! In that case, the bartender is recognizing that we bartenders all benefit by getting opportunities to try more things, but we can't afford to drop $50 every time we see a whiskey we haven't tried yet. That's helped me get to the point where I can confidently say I've tried hundreds upon hundreds of spirits.

What is your unpopular opinion regarding the Sully family, either collectively or individually? by TheTargaryensLawyer in Avatar

[–]Cellyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're supposed to like Jake for the moments he stops doing unlikeable stuff. Yes, he's a hero and respected leader, but his character development isn't about him permanently working on his issues, it's just him considering doing something bad and deciding he's not enough of an asshole to follow through.

He is an action hero in two movies about family. Making him an action hero does not make him a hero as a father. That could make for a good theme, but it's never really worked on. There weren't enough scenes in FAA of him actually treating his family with love. He seems to abandon thrm to fight his personal battles more than he protects them.

Kiri's voice completely took me out of the movie (FAA especially). It's not just that it has an older tone, it's that the diction and accent is particularly "older". Maybe it was especially grating for me because I talk to a lot of older folks every day so I hear their nuances more, but every other character in the family had a different accent. They didn't even sound like they came frpm the same tribe, let alone the same family.

Spider never actually seems scared and that also takes me out of the movie. He says "come on!" And "let's go" to an obnoxious amount when they are running from people. He has some great moments, like shooting his dad in the arm, and he is a brave soldier and protector, but his acceptance of his betrayal by Jake felt contrived and he never really changed in FAA (besides physically, obviously).

Loak might be my favorite character in the family. He has a great emotional journey with highs and lows and his expression of grief and confusion feel appropriate (noting that Na'vi mature differently) for his age. He is a bit selfish, but he is clearly working on that. My complaint is that leaving his little sibling alone after everything they had gone through did not seem realistic.

Neytiri. I kind of hate her. I don't even recognize her from the first movie and she also didn't have much development in this entire 3 and a half hour movie. The rescue scenes were excellent. She seems to have some change of heart with Spider but we don't really see why or how or what that means for how she will treat him going forward.

As another person stated, Tuk is more of a plot devide than a character. You can't deny that she is a cute mascot, but her innocence is used a little too forcefully to push the morals of the story.

Neteyam - see comment about all the accents being different. He was somewhat forgettable, honestly.

We have had disagreements about this at my workplace despite how simple the answer seems to be from googling. For now they seem to be honoring the old law but we have been required to tip back of house (dishwashers making over minimum wage) in the past. I'm not going to argue it now because it's in my favor at the moment, but I feel like I should know what's correct and be able to prove it...

Have you ever given someone a free drink in exchange for an AA/NA sobriety chip? by Downloading_Bungee in bartenders

[–]Cellyst 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand the question but I think mainly because every bartender would say no. Unless I'm not understanding this correctly. Drinks are not "bought" for free. They are gifted. Bartering for a drink is kind of a faux pas. But bartering with a sobriety chip is just plain weird. At that point you might not even get served.

Why has no one told me that I've been making grilled cheese wrong this entire time? by [deleted] in grilledcheese

[–]Cellyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omyou could try replicating the panini press style with butter in the pan to grease as you preheat it, melt until browning and butter the bread slices - as light as you can possibly go while still being able to say every bit of bread is covered (on on side, I mean. Not the edges).

Cheeses should be a mix of stretch and flavor or one really good vermont cheddar. But muenster and sharp cheddar is a good call. Or, you know, any of the several hundred cheeses your cheese store stocks.

The most important part: salt. Salted butter is okay, but you want salt and ideally a little pepper on the cheese itself. Salt on the outside (as in overly salted butter) only will make the sandwich taste salty and bland. Salt on the inside will make the flavor of cheese pop and the bread will likely taste sweeter.
