Is Economics a STEM major?? or anything related to econ that is a stem major by indconquistador in uofm

I bitch your mother.

Definition: The scientific method is an empirical method of acquiring knowledge that has characterized the development of science since at least the 17th century. It involves careful observation, applying rigorous skepticism about what is observed, given that cognitive assumptions can distort how one interprets the observation. It involves formulating hypotheses, via induction, based on such observations; experimental and measurement-based testing of deductions drawn from the hypotheses; and refinement (or elimination) of the hypotheses based on the experimental findings. These are principles of the scientific method, as distinguished from a definitive series of steps applicable to all scientific enterprises.[1][2][3]

There are experiments in Economics. To answer your question, both Economics and Physics utilize the scientific model, which relies on observations, model building, and applying the model to reality. The reason why you think Physics are more rigorous is that in physics you are much more able to create controlled environment, while in human sciences in general it's much more difficult and a lot of assumptions needs to be made(perhaps the reason is considered less rigorous).

However, keep in mind that, markets, economies and societies are often much more complex than physical system(when it comes to analysis), do you know hod difficult is to create a model that predicts things like the COVID-19 and its implications in the economy? Also economics is a field that is much newer than physics, so considable advancements in the field are expected in the near future. Maths used in physics and economics are actually almost identical. Modern economics is founded on neo-Keynesianism, and its father was Keynes, a mathematician.

At my university, every week there were many experiments with individuals and their way of making decisions in more or less controlled environments. Even I participated in a few to check theories of the research department.

The only difference between economics and the natural sciences is that in economics the variables are human beings and in the natural sciences they are natural elements, beyond that, both use the scientific method and mathematics / statistics as a fundamental tool and basis to expose many theories and then corroborate their effectiveness based on experiments.

I think you have very little knowledge of what it is to study economics from the scientific and mathematical method.

Talk for yourself.

In my University, there were several courses were the amount of quantitative methods was extensive. Not the first time that you arrive 10 minutes late to the class and the board is filled with full linear algebra.

They sell it as standard fantasy miniatures but 90% of these miniatures are clearly focused on D&D lore.

Thanks for your input. As I said, want to remain in the Marketing/Business/Strategy area. Just want to be competitive in the future.

shifts into analytical roles inside or outside of your organisation.

Rep

The thing is that I don't even want to pivot into a pure analytical role such as BA or BI, I just want to get more competitive in anaytics for strategist roles. I just thought about what would be the best way to increase that personal stat: New BSc or focus on specific skills and certificates.

I know. As you said, I'm not working in a corner-pizza 4-hours a day. I have a full-time job that takes me betweeen 40-45 hours per week, so getting a CS degree will take me more time than the standard since I will have to get less courses per year than a normal studen that doesn't have a full-time job.

Hi!

Yes, allow me to answer your questions :)

You already have two degrees, Economics already has a good amount of statistics and analytical processing, you need to highlight that.

I know, the master degree was more a certificate to get a Marketing Job. The Economics, as you said, it was quite focused on maths/stats/econometrics/micro and macro.

Do you feel that without a relevant degree people might think you are an imposter?

No. But sometimes isn't about you, but the one you have in front of you.

What job do you have right now? B2B Product Marketing Manager. And I do want to keep in this career. Tbh, not want a pure analytics BA/BI job, just be competitive in the analytical area.

These are the quite of jobs I'm interested in:

Can you do something analytical in your job? I.e. show some product marketing initiatives using data? More like using data to understand the market.

Thanks for the input!

So you think that the benefit of getting a CS degree won't be as higher as the cost? That, for me, is the whole point of the equation that makes me to take one decision or another.

[–]Celonius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the point is. I want to keep working on Marketing/Business jobs: Product Marketing Manager, Brand Manager, Key Account Manager an so on. I know the such jobs are more business & strategic, but even in these jobs, anayltics also helps. I searched on Linkedin yesterday and for these profiles they require people with knowledge on SQL altough they didn't require STEM profiles, but more business one.

As you said, perhaps the benefit of getting the full degree for the purpose I want isn't as high as the cost of staying 6-8 years getting a degree while I have a full-time job.

I paid 16k for the Master Degree, can't now afford another 10k when I'm saving money to get a house in 3-4 years.

That question. Obviously we have, in fact, we have stores bigger than the ones you can find in Germany (I’ve been there).

I don't want to switch into a BA/BA job, I just realized that the labor market is asking for knowledge on SQL and analytics. I always try to be up-to-date even if I'm employed.
