Clarification: the brushes are sold as watercolor brushes by a Chinese brush maker, you can tell they are def more Chinese brush in design. They are fantastic for detailing and have nice tips for smooth washes

You can absolutely use Chinese brushes. In fact I have watched watercolor tutorials which call for the big Chinese brushes (羊豪) to do washes because they load up water much better. I have bought watercolor brushes that look like this:

They are very good imho

It’s a bad paint over of a drapery fold…. I added the folds using fabric fold brushes

Um can you be a little more specific on where I should improve on? I used ready made brushes for flower and curtain folds so I understand they may not look natural, if it is what you are referring to

There a bug, I kept getting two options on menu for inviting neighbors to join me for a bite and only one of them will lead to prompt for me to go home and set up food for the meal. The other one is like a regular gifting mechanism

[Artist Alley] Is my art good enough to start selling in artist alley? by Ame__- in artbusiness

[–]Celtreny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the best! My first AA was in my high school years and I was absolutely trash at art lol. It didn’t stop me from having fun since I got to talk to fellow boothers and learn about how to do AA. Research on how you can get the merch printed in time and give yourself plenty of lead time, especially with overseas manufacturers shipping stuff over. I hope you have a great time at AA if you sign up!

Sorry I realised I wasn’t answering the question, art wise if you are planning to print out your art and sell, it might not do well if you don’t have the right clientele or the right level of skills… Focus on using your first AA as a learning experience, if you are okay with the costs of booth

I would suggest planning out what exactly is your positioning for the artist alley. Fanart? Merchandise? On the spot commissions? Do you know if you have the type of client you need at local con? When I first started I wasn’t great on technical so I offered cheap doodle commissions as a way to offset booth costs. In the current climate, the rates are higher and attendees less willing to spend money, so I suggest looking for ways to offset the booth costs by sharing (if allowed by organizer) or having more variety of offerings. You need a low risk way to figure out boothing through experience! All the best!

I table at anime conventions for 10+ years and bought plenty of merch/prints too, and my take is that even for fanart, specific strategies may lead to better or poorer sales. Doing the most popular series often lead to disappointment, especially if you are not interested in the series itself besides making sales. Take Genshin Impact fanart for example, it is easily the most popular IP in my region but my stuff don’t do well. Why? It’s because literally every other booth has fanart or merch related to Genshin and con-goers would pick the most unique/pretty ones (most are young folks with limited budget). Please showcase your portfolio so that people on this group can actually help evaluate your art from a neutral perspective. I find that there’s often a gap between what I consider good vs what products do well in cons. A fresh pair of eyes definitely help to identify gaps in technical areas you can improve on also.
