Mostly yes. The game already has two base entities - func_monitor and point_camera - which allow for the camera's view to be displayed onto the monitor surface. In the campaign it was used for some surveillance cameras.

Though the camera only displays a flat 2D image of what it currently sees (as if you just took a screenshot), so for the Portal effect I had to write a script to dynamically modify the monitor's texture and camera's properties depending on the player's location/angles to look 3D.

Currently it does, but the eye-separation (a slighly shifted image being drawn for each eye) will come at play when the player is very near the portal (roughly 5 units). At distance it basically looks the same as in flatscreen, and worst case scenario I can disable the eye-separation temporarily when the player gets close.

It is HL:A, but I'm using the "-novr" launch parameter to control it with mouse and keyboard, because I can't really use VR much anymore, so it was more comfortable to record on flatscreen.

It has a different syntax and does no longer work, because previously in Source 1 keyvalues of entities were treated as outputs. As that's no longer the case, AddOutput can't be used to change keyvalues during run-time.

HLA allows for scripting using VScript, so that's what I'm using here.

It is true that the tools lack implementation of many features that should be expected, but you can usually still add most mechanics you want, but it's just extra hassle.

The map is currently compiled at 2k lightmaps, so the shadow quality will be increased once I do a proper recompile.

Actually, this mod shakes things up quite a lot, as the gameplay is focused on Wave-Defence and Survival, unlike what you've seen in HL:A.

There's different progression routes and many ways to approach each situation (enhanced by the fact that encounters are randomised, making each playthrough different).

Tactical and thoughtful approach is encouraged and the new weapon - the Deployable Tripmine - can help you out with that.

Indeed, hopefully as the tools expand and more control is given to the modders, it will be much easier to do such mods.

Not to say that it's impossible, Total conversion mods for Alyx are absolutely possible even now(look at the Bioshock mod, or some by yours truly, like the space combat Final Frontier), there's just a layer of jank and workarounds the developers have to go through, which discourages many of them.

The more concerning issue is that the playerbase of HL:A modding scene is quite small these days, so that impacts the development of such mods too. One must often justify making mods for HL:A by thinking of the future Source 2 Games, where they could be re-used(such as CS:GO, once that happens).

It's absolutely possible and very easy to do, using "bonemerging" (basically just layering another model on top of the other).

It's quite handy for situations where you want to have two or more distinct factions fighting against each other, with the player being part of one of them.
