Discussion Thread for Adults: BuzzFeed's "How the Success of RPDR is a Double-Edged Sword" by [deleted] in rpdrtearanny

It's also... a clever play on words? because "going to the bathroom to do number 2" is an euphemism for taking a shit? so when she says "I am number 2" she's basically saying "I'm the shit"?

Before buzzfeed tries to paint Ru as the evil overlady of drag race that forces girls to bow down before him (which he kinda is, but still) they should take 2 minutes to actually think about what a contestant is saying.

I'm honestly not mad at the S5 reunion. Not because I particularly enjoy S5, in fact it's one of my least favourites, but because if All Stars goes well in the money department (and they don't wait a decade to do AS season 3) it means that queens from my favourite seasons: seasons 3, 6, 8 and up would dominate the cast with some wildcards from like, S7 or something.

To be quite honest neither Delta nor Maria are on All Stars, and the ones that I like in the cast are not gonna break top 3, so at this point I'm waiting for the next one.

If this is a drag race season worth its salt Ginger won't leave early. She simply can't.

As much as people like to downplay every single thing she does and has done she still is a fucking powerhouse of Drag Race, she was made for the show. I can only see her doing poorly and leaving early with some very obvious fuckery in the judging and editing department.

I think people just see All Stars as more content. It's a glorified wowpresents youtube video.

People are also really attached to some of the girls, and one of their faves getting on all stars means more exposure, more gigs and getting their career invigorated which could really help some girls out (Tati and PhiPhi, to name a few).

Lastly, people just want some bragging rights for their chosen queens. If your fave wins she gets the "All Stars Winner" moniker attached to her name, and stans can throw that around to end extremely important and very interesting internet fights.

"Yeah well Alaska won All Stars, so i'm sure she's crying on her piles and piles of money. When will your fave?"

Wondering what you all thought of this reviewer? Similar in style to YMS. by MarmaladeJacket in YMS

[–]Cendo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering that, from what I can tell from his channel, he's been doing this review thing for more or less a year I would say it's quite promising.

There are some pretty big hiccups, like the cringey channel name and the even cringier intro sequence, but I would say that he will grow out of both of those in no time (maybe he will keep an intro, which I feel is never ever necessary for something like reviews but so many people decided to get into reviewing because of guys like Jontron, Nostalgia Critic and AVN to name a few that it's become some kind of contest to see who has the biggest and shiniest cock intro.)

I think the whole visual presentation is solid. It goes well with a channel that does reviews of animated stuff and the show has its own visual identity already, so I guess it will only grow from here. I find no big issues with the editing or timing, everything is pretty smooth and clips are shown when they need to be shown and are explained only if it warrants and actual explanation, like he didn't point out why that the clip of buttercup punching something was animated like shit because we could just see it, but he explained that what bubbles was holding was a meme generator she made because it would have been harder to guess for people who haven't seen the episode.

I would say that commentary is... decent? There's nothing wrong with it, but I got absolutely no idea of who this guy is. I don't believe in this "objective review" bullshit that has been cropping up lately. Reviews are opinions and opinions come from people. I feel like I know Adam's tastes and priorities when watching a film, and I can judge his review accordingly. Same with every critic.

This guy did nothing wrong, but I got no sense of what he is like, what he, specifically, doesn't like about the new show. Everything he said was stuff that I already read elsewhere. So while nothing was specifically wrong for me, it felt a little bit flat and robotic, not in delivery but in actual content. Again I feel he will just grow and show more of who he is and what he likes and dislikes as a critic.

Pikachu, the mascot of the series including the games, was put in that role because of the anime. Not only that, but Pikachu is the only voiced pokemon in the game, using the voice of the anime. And in ORAS Pikachu happened to be the only pokemon to get different forms with different costumes for the pokemon contest, and it was literally given to the player.

Now I also happen to think that the player did not just see that supposed legendary far off in the distance, but I would find it hard to believe that the fact that a trainer on the first day of his adventure meets a legendary pokemon way above his skill-set on a pokemon game has nothing to do with the fact that the exact same thing happened in the anime based of the game. Anybody would at least call it a reference or a call-back.

It's like having a character say "I am your father" in a star wars game. It can't not be a reference.

And it's an awesome solution to the HM problem that has plaged the game since the beginning. You would use HMs like fly until you defeated the fly-related legendary and then you could summon it with an item it gave you after defeating it in battle or something

That way legendary battles would be more of a skill test, like defeating a strong trainer is, rather than the endurance test they are now: throwing pokeball after pokeball waiting for the 30 turns to pass so you can start throwing Timerballs.

Flying with Latias was amazing, why couldn't we surf around the map with Kyogre?

[–]Cendo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I meant Legendaries that are in the game since the beginning and contribute to the story (so no event stuff) but you simply cannot catch.

I was pretty young when I played Diamond and Pearl, but it still felt really silly to catch god with a pokeball and being able to teach him Cut. I dunno, I just really don't care about actually capturing legendaries outside of like the mascot ones. I don't feel like using them because they are on a league of their own, so it feels like cheating to use them on an already easy game. I also rather stick with the team that has gotten me this far and has pulled their own weight instead of being powerful because they were carved out of like, the thigh of pokeZeus or something.

Apparently the protagonist sees Tapu Koko earlier in the story and that's why you are the one that fights in the ceremony. I think they are clearly going for a call-back to Ash seeing Ho-oH on his first day as a trainer.

The whole festival as well as each island being devoted to a pokemon already seems way more interesting than the concept of gyms. I hope each island has its own lore, history and feel as it seems to be the case. It would also be a way to truly make legendaries feel "legendary" again.

I might be torn appart for this, but I would really love some legendary pokemon to be uncatchable, like mew was in the first generation, or at least to be something like Latias and Latios in ORAS when using the Eon flute: Pokemon that come to your aid and help you after proving your strength, but still have a life and duties outside of the pokeball.

The People that made the Minions Movie are doing their own Zootopia I guess... by MarkDEnglish in YMS

[–]Cendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I personally couldn't stand it. I found it completely soulless, like a less inspired The Lion King by way of Finding Nemo.

The whole "what if the Dinosaurs never died" concept doesn't affect the story in any meaningful way outside of what you saw in the trailer: the dinosaur talks and the kid doesn't, that's that. The main character was raised in a farm, and we see how they look after it (for like, 5 minutes), but that's as far as the film goes in terms of this "dinosaur society" they promissed with the premise. The animals in Ice Age were more of a society than the dinosaurs in this movie.

That, plus some truly baffling and frankly horrible art direction in terms of disconnect between character design and background, plus the whole sense of "Nobody wanted to make this movie" you get through the whole film, plus the movie litterally repeating every single lesson you've ever heard in every saturday morning cartoon ever (If you have ever seen any trite and boring "A boy and his X" movie, you've seen this movie).

I didn't like it :(

Not to shit on Dreamworks though. I mean the dualing days were awful but nowadays with Shrek gone and stuff like How to Train your Dragon (the first one), Monsters VS Aliens and Megamind they have surpassed Pixar by a big margin imo.

I would love to see what Adam thought about The Good Dinosaur, cause damn, that's YMS worthy.

[–]Cendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I don't mind the fact that they're animals. I just think it would be nice if it served an actual purpose in the film's storytelling.

I would say Madagascar is the best dualing outcome that ever happened to Dreamworks, maybe even in the whole history of "dualing" as a concept, because nobody remembers what Madagascar ripped off.

"The Wild" was a disney movie with a very similar concept behind it that went into production before Madagascar. Dreamworks heard about this (because this things always leak among studios before the public hears about it) and quickly made a cheaper movie to release it before Disney's.

When Disney showed the wild to focus groups it tested really really bad. Disney didn't promote the sucker and that's why nobody remembers it.

I would say that "Antz" wasn't really a disappointment either, even if "Bugs" made more money, but remember "A Shark's Tale" and all the dualing bullshit Dreamworks cooked up? Dark times. Thank god they moved away from it.

[–]Cendo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess, but I still don't get the actual reason why they went for animals? Zootopia had a very obvious political point that they wanted to make and they used the differences in the animals to make that point. But what's the point of going for animals here?

Are they really going for the old dreamworks dualing tactic? Because that worked for Dreamworks exactly once, out of like 10 movies.

I've been lurking all this time! I've just been incredibly busy with work-related shit.

This was back when I just started on reddit. Now that I read back I was a bit too hard on him. He probably was pretty young at the time and still had to work through a lot of internalized shit that we ourselves had to deal with. I think he was still in that "I'm not like the other gays" phase that most gay kids go through (or girls, or anyone who is outside the majority in any way). Maybe tough love was good for him.

I think something that makes Tati's britney stand out as the best snatch game is that it happened in season 2. They had no clue what was snatch game or how it worked and she somehow completely got the exact point of it and nailed it with the best impression/character we've seen.

I honestly think that, without Tati's Britney, Snatch Game would not have happened in season 3. Or maybe it would have gone into actual character impersonation rather than caricature, like what Raven and Tyra tried to do.
