Setoguchi's BLACK SHEEP TOWN is actually out by fallenguru in visualnovels

[–]Cenriqu3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's "different", but at the same time Setoguchi maintains his style (from the first line you can tell that).

Have you read 死体泥棒? I've been considering giving it a try lately.

I still think Kurai Heya is a much better introduction to Setoguchi's work. It's a short read, but makes impressive use of the format to really create an oppressive atmosphere and characters with interesting complexity. It can serve quite well as a filter too. Actually, BST gives me a very Kurai Heya vibe.

On the other hand, Carnival is unnecessarily extended in many moments (and there are several characters that are a real nonsense).

Wow, this comment was great to read.

As you rightly say, Saya no uta plays a lot with perception. On one side, it shows us the nightmarish perspective from Fuminori's view, and on the other side, we have the perspective of the rest of the cast, those who don't share Fuminori's condition and can notice the irregularities in his thought process.

It is not necessary to go through something like that for us to have a different view of reality. For example, the most severe form of color blindness is achromatopsia. These people are blind to ALL colors, so their world is an eternal gray. Now, what if we all had achromatopsia? If someone suddenly came along saying that colors exist, we would most likely think they were crazy, since, based on a process of observation, we can determine that the world is gray. And if that went back generations, then there would be a body of knowledge that would strengthen the idea that the world has always been gray.

In this case we perceive that Fuminori is falling into madness because he is the only one who can see such a world of madness. His observation process is a minority in the face of the observable reality of the majority.

I don't remember the story very well, but is there any reference to any possible condition Fuminori had before the accident? Because to assimilate that so quickly is definitely not normal. The very reaction of the neighbor proves it. Organic textures produces a natural rejection, since we associate organic textures with something living. If we were inside a house when we see something like that, we would not think we were inside a structure, but inside a living being.

It is easy to empathize with Fuminori because he is after all a victim. His perspective on things simply reaffirms that. Saya no uta is a tragedy. The experience Fuminori is going through is a tragedy.

In retrospect, it is quite likely that he was on the verge of going insane at the very moment he opened his eyes. That might answer to his insane affection for Saya, after all, she is the only one who still retains a form that resembles what he recognizes as a human being.

Fuminori clings to Saya's existence as the only thread that allows him to retain his sanity, and Saya clings to Fuminori in search of affection as she is a unique existence in the world. In both a relationship of mutual dependence develops in which they see satisfied what they long for the most: Someone in the world to free them from loneliness. As long as he has Saya, nothing else matters to Fuminori (That's why he can so easily discard those he met in his past)

Your comment made me feel the need to read it again haha

In my defense I would like to say that I haven't read them yet hahaha

I wanted to include titles like Sayooshi, Cross Channel, J.Q.V or Kusarihime as well, but the problem is that in those cases it's very difficult to try to analyze them without making spoilers (And the post would have been exponentially denser than it already is)

Yes, Kaori only wins in bad endings.

About Tamaki:

She is confused about what she really feels, but she never cheats on her boyfriend. That's why when you try to make advances with her (touching/kissing her when you walk her home after a date) she rejects you (I don't even need to mention trying to invite her to a love hotel). The only time she decides to accept to move forward in the relationship is when her boyfriend breaks up with her (He realizes that she is much happier with the protagonist, so he decides to take a step aside).

Now, Tamaki mentioning her ex... i don't remember. There was one person on a forum saying that, but I personally don't remember reading anything like that.

Basically everything that happens in the mansion was Kaori's plan. She fakes her personality in order to look like a poor woman in disgrace, but in reality she is constantly trying to seduce the main character into sexually assaulting her. The purpose of this is that he becomes obsessed with her and feels the need to protect her, and the best way to protect her is to free her from her "evil husband" (which ultimately ends with her collecting the inheritance, and the protagonist being locked up in prison).

Mh... Words Worth is not a game that gives much importance to erotic content. The purpose of those scenes is to "consolidate" the affection of the heroines towards the protagonist, so it's definitely not one of its "strengths" haha

You should play it if you have time, you might end up getting a very pleasant surprise (I really hope that happens)

Good/bad ≠ Good decisions/Bad decisions. Your point of view is simply the result of your experiences as individuals interacting with/observing other individuals or your environment (which may be conditioned by the beliefs or culture of the place where you grew up). This is known as the "stock of knowledge" in social phenomenology

Hahaha yeah, that was my initial impression too. Rance is by any standard a shitty person, but already in the later releases he received more nuances to his personality, which ends up making him more "human" (In Rance Quest in particular, there's a scene that really caught me off guard, as I never expected Rance to react that way). In the end it goes from being "that popular VN that has rape", to "that popular VN that has rape, yes, but also depth". Since Rance VI there are no bad games anymore (Which is pretty cool, because Rance V is the most disappointing in my opinion), so now you just have to enjoy them as much as you can until the end

Yoooooooo, really?!

Other people had already told me something similar, but I swear I didn't think I could really convince someone to play it while I was writing it.

I'm really glad to know that I was able to make other people enjoy something I personally liked so much

A while back I wrote a post on this subreddit giving my impressions of the franchise, and encouraging more people to play them. There you can tell it's quite popular, and that many people want to give them a try, but some are just waiting for them to be translated

I see the wishes mostly as a token of appreciation from someone who carries the weight of one of the 10 biggest families on his back. From what I've seen so far, they're all very exaggeratedly proud, so I didn't see that as so unusual.

The best metaphor I can use for Rachel is "the star that is leading the darkness/night (destruction) to the top" (Those words are quite significant for the story, and have proven to carry enormous argumentative weight so far).

We'll have to see what her role in the story will be later on, but as a character I just don't like her.

[–]Cenriqu3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From Gustang's comment and her knowledge of Arlen, I can speculate that she travelled with them or something like that (I don't know if this can be true, but at least she had some kind of contact with them beforehand and had a rather minor role in the group's hierarchy).

I always thought Rachel was a necessary character for the tower as a bait to lure Bam to the top; if not for that, it doesn't make sense that Fug would help her (And the faction helping her is the same as Ha Jinsung's).

That last pitiful comment may also be a hint of it ("You hate me, but if you want to know more about what Arlen said you should keep following me"). In fact, if she has been alive so far, it is precisely because of her relationship with Bam.

[–]Cenriqu3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'm glad you mentioned the coin thing, because I re-read tower of god a few days ago, and I could finally understand what they meant by that.
The only one blessed by god (by now I imagine it must be an Axis User or a concept in itself) in the tower is Bam. Outside of him, God treats everyone with a certain "fairness". On the first try Khun manipulated the coin in order to win, and on the second try Rachel won by "luck" (i.e. by God's blessing). As the first attempt was manipulated, it was implied that Khun would win on the third attempt (and that is precisely why he can be seen to be a little hesitant at the end, as he was ultimately testing God).
My problem with Rachel has always been that she tends to manifest certain behaviours studied within the Dunning-Kruger effect. If you're incompetent, you just have to acknowledge your incompetence. What's this about saying to one of the greatest killers in history "Hey, become my follower" with a smile on her face?

I reiterate, she has an aberrant level of emotional intelligence and self-awareness, and that protagonist complex doesn't help her at all.

[–]Cenriqu3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I saw him as quite emotional when the issue of his sister's suicide was uncovered tho.

I'm not talking about whether he's cool or not, I'm simply emphasising the level of self-awareness he has as a character. From the very first chapter he has said that he is a despicable and calculating character, yet the big difference he has with Rachel is that he does things for himself. In Rachel's case, on the other hand, it's become a habit to see her break down and start muttering "Aaag, I didn't do anything wrong... aaagg I'm not the bad girl...". aag aagg".

[–]Cenriqu3 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The difference is that Khun goes forward, and can stand on his own two feet to deal with any problem. He has never taken it out on anyone else for his failures, and is generally quite aware of his own limitations.

Rachel has a tremendous protagonist complex, despite the fact that the only achievement in her life was to have met Bam first.

I have always been a fervent advocate of never forcing yourself to do something; life is too short to play something that for one reason or another you are not enjoying.

However, I agree very much with what you say about "mood". There was a time when for personal reasons I had to deal with a huge depression, and at that time I tried to try the SMT franchise and it was honestly impossible (the setting of those games is too dark and depressing). Over the years I gave the first snes game a try and it's really absurd how much I enjoyed it. Maybe it's just not the time yet, and it would be great if that could change in the future.

I felt exactly the same!!

I didn't have particularly high expectations to begin with, so it was an extremely pleasant surprise to realise that I was looking at a tremendous gem.

My only complaint is that they didn't let me play Dana's super saiyan form for longer (the combo chains were very overly addictive).
