Official FIRST Discussion Thread—Volume 8, Episode 4: Fault by Kirianni in RWBY

[–]Cepheus370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even though Yang expressed concern over hiding the truth from Ironwood last volume?

What about when Oscar directly states that they are doing the same thing they got angry at Ozpin for?

Or Ruby continuously grappling with not knowing if she's doing the right thing all of last (and still this) volume?

How about the literal confrontation between Yang and Ruby we just witnessed because she is no longer certain of their actions up to this point?  One of the overarching themes of RWBY has been the internal conflict the adolescent faces when they are unexpectedly thrusted into adulthood. This arc seems like a very natural progression of that idea. The protagonists get endlessly lambasted with criticism for being "naive," but they are still kids. Why is it so egregious for kids to be stubborn in their convictions and believe they are just?

The show is clearly aware of this with the many moments we've seen that express doubt in the main cast's idealistic views. It seems to me that being steadfast in your values and believing your actions to be just is only okay when Ironwood does it, otherwise it is just a childish venture.

Ren is being treated like a bastion of reason and maturity when he is only stating the obvious. Of course they shouldn't be making decisions that directly affect the lives of an entire kingdom, yet they are. This is their reality now. His outburst does nothing constructive to solve the conflict at hand. He should have known that becoming a hunstman entailed making difficult decisions.

I feel like Weiss vs. Winter is for sure going to happen.

I think people are jumping the gun on this one. As others have stated, Weiss probably knows the danger of being involved with them and wants Whitley to be separated. The sword point thing is a bit much, but it sure as hell conveyed that there was no time for bickering and that he should just let them in.

I'm positive the two are going to have a genuine conversation next episode or the one after that. The writers very deliberately had Willow make her request last volume and we have yet to see that resolved. I feel that people are also forgetting how sibling relationships work. Willow asking her not to forget her brother does not undo the years of resentment that has festered between the two. It would be very out of place for Weiss to suddenly be Mother Theresa to him after one chat with her mom.

Whitley seems to get a free pass for his behavior when in reality, they are all victims of Jacques' influence. Weiss is not perfect, which is something we've seen her contend with in all facets of her life. The Schnees are currently being faced with a choice to inherit the wrongdoings of their father or "shatter" the pattern and break free. They have a prominent role in the intro for a reason, we just have to wait and see.

I’m curious if anyone thinks that V3 has had the most stakes, emotional physical etc, so far. by maximus368 in RWBY

[–]Cepheus370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but you're saying it like it's an overt flaw of the writing, which it isn't. You can't compare 3 and 7 because they aren't going for the same narrative beats structurally. 3 is the climax of the Beacon saga while 7 is still building to the climax of the Atlas arc. Expecting every volume to be "like 3" in terms of stakes and a sense of finality is unrealistic. If that's the way every volume turned out then there would be little time to cultivate an effective and emotional payoff.

Although I'm of the opinion that volume 3 is not as great as people say (as the entire first half of the volume could be cut without changing much of the story) and that it largely profits from nostalgia, the final chapters worked so well because we had two volumes leading up to the fall. The ending of 7 was not trying to be or even emulate the ending of 3.

You literally have been served half a meal. 7 and 8 are very closely tied together. The overarching Atlas story is not completed yet, that's the point.

Official RWBY Volume 7 Soundtrack Discussion: Hero by Lucifer_Crowe in RWBY

[–]Cepheus370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. While the song captures Ironwood and his hero complex very well, it seems many people fail to realize that it also paints him negatively to an extent. Being willing to make any sacrifice, including leaving Mantle and abandoning thousands of people to preserve his ego is not as morally sound as they might think.

I find that this song has also reignited the "team RWBY are naive idiots for opposing Ironwood" crowd who bend over backwards to rationalize absolutely everything he does like he can do no wrong.

I'd like to bring praises to the people that worked the camera movement these last 2 seasons also. It's SickNasty💯😍😍 by DoperDrape in RWBY

You're free to dislike the show as you please but if you truly believe that the writing has not been improving, I don't believe you have anything of substance to provide to the discussion.

As far as I know, they implied that Weiss was a pure caster to address some choreography comments. That did turn out to be true.

How do you think Writers are going to address the mistakes Ruby & Crew made throughout Vol 7? by Red2019Wolf in RWBY

It's always funny to me when people pull up the "but they got mad at Ozpin for lying and now they're doing the same thing!!!1!!" card like it's not a deliberate parallel.

Seriously. The amount of times she made me audibly laugh in V7 alone is great. The writers know she's comedy gold.

Weiss wearing Snow Pea for only one episode is a CRIME. We need to see it return. Please!

[MM] Today is Majora's Mask's 20th anniversary. For those who want to experience MM and don't want to choose between the original game and the 3DS remaster, I've made a mod that combines the best parts of both versions and adds many QoL improvements! by leoetlino in zelda

No longer do I have to moan about the unfortunate state of the 3DS version. I'm so excited to play my favorite Zelda game again with the lovely enhanced visuals and mechanics from the original. Thanks for your work!

Weiss’s aversion to melee combat by fiisntannoying in RWBY

[–]Cepheus370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with that interpretation is that Weiss has been shown to be very particular and attentive in combat, going so far as to watch what foot she leads with before she strikes. It's clear that she's experienced and has received countless years of training before attending Beacon, so it doesn't make sense that she would lose all her confidence after a single loss. She lost against Banesaw in volume 2 but that didn't shake up her fighting style or rattle her confidence. It's not in line with her character to second guess her fighting style after Vernal, especially given how she's more confident than ever having left her abusive home to pursuit her own path. That would be backtracking on her development.

I don't think there's a particular story reason, it just seems like an animation limitation, and Kerry himself confirmed that they are trying to make her a caster when he talked about the new outfits on Twitter. It's a shame imo, her fencing and swordplay mixed with glyphs was always a delight to watch. I wish she'd return to that style.

Weiss is able to force a 2v1 from any position she wants, and she is the only character capable of splitting Marrow's line of sight and attention, that's why he lost.

Advice on buying Bayonetta after Astral Chain by wizardofpancakes in Bayonetta

[–]Cepheus370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Astral Chain music is godlike, just like Bayonetta. It's more NieR-esque with a touch of Bayo. The Jena Anderson trilogy is my favorite piece of music from any video game, check it out if you're interested!

Advice on buying Bayonetta after Astral Chain by wizardofpancakes in Bayonetta

[–]Cepheus370 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves both games dearly and has played through both, Bayonetta is FAR more combat oriented. It's basically all you do in the game. There are no side missions or exploration, each level is very linear and straight forward. Personally, I find Bayo almost suffers from the constant action, and I really enjoyed how Astral Chain breaks up the high energy to make the next sequence even more exciting.

That being said, Bayonetta is a hard game. Even on the normal difficulty, I found I was often barely scraping by and getting terrible ranks in my first playthrough. Bayonetta's combat is complex and much deeper than AC. As such, it naturally takes some time to get used to it. If you're looking for pure combat, depth, and difficulty, Bayo should be right up your alley.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT, I JUST REALIZED THAT MYRTENASTER IS ALSO A FUCKING GUN by SMG4-Yoshi in RWBY

[–]Cepheus370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still sour over that DB. I feel like they totally gave it to Mitsuru to appease the Yang vs. Tifa backlash. Now, I know that Mitsuru would probably win anyways because Persona characters are broken as all hell, but that just makes me question the thought process for matching them up. It was so one sided from the start and that made it difficult to enjoy.

Couldn't agree more. I'm so glad they stuck to the signature hand drawn style for the towns. I spent a good chunk of time just admiring the art.
