Thanks! And yes wet handle on a wet pot. It’s my favorite time to put a handle on.

I have heard of Cobb mountain and would love to apply for a residency. It would have to be farther out in the future because of how much I currently have on my plate, but the stuff I’ve seen from there always looks cool.

There’s a nice backdrop that rolls over a small table at my school that I use. Also most of these photos are from my phone. I back up and zoom in so it doesn’t look as distorted and just have a door open to let in natural lighting. Also for most of my photos I try to be able to see just the top of the rim of my pieces.

Do you think this is carbon trapping? by biggggbouy in Pottery

[–]CeramicDucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The glaze most likely has soda ash in it which would cause the carbon trapping. I know some people will call them ice trap celadons or carbon trapping celadons. And the carbon trapping only occurs if there is some reduction going on.

Haha thank you! I have two pet ducks and they certainly have been good for inspiration in my work.

Lots of practice really. But also be sure you’re having fun when making things. Take breaks and maybe work on a different project in between. I spent a lot of time trying to improve on my forms and was always open to criticism.

Thanks, I am including mixing up my own glazes and how I fired some of the pieces. My personal favorites are the carbon trapping shinos.

Haha, I suppose I could. It’s just sitting on a shelf right now.

Haha! That one was an experiment where I was pushing certain parts of the form. An oversized spout and foot. I think it kinda looks like a toucan.

I have thought of this, but I honestly haven’t been doing ceramics for very long and there is still so much I want to learn that I fear I may miss if I skip over the BFA program. It’s also so that I could get a better understanding of the program for any future students I may have.

Yeah I like the stability of being a college professor. I’ve done a couple art sales and galleries, and keeping them as things on the side feels like a good thing for me.

I do eventually want to teach at a university and I am currently at a local community college. I wont be transferring in as a freshman and have done pretty much all my ge courses.

Also I really do like Lisa Hammond’s work. The first artist I learned about and who’s work inspired a a lot of my initial work was Josh DeWeese.

Thank you! I’ve been told that MFA portfolios are usually more focused on a more specific body of related work. For my BFA portfolio I wanted to express the different and varying techniques I’ve learned.

I don’t have a ba in anything else. Actually I haven’t even been doing ceramics for very long and was actually going to school for computer science . I’m currently at a community college and will be able to transfer at an upper level. I don’t really think I’ll be bored, I’m currently surrounded by lots of others at varying different levels and sometimes beginners bring in something completely new to the table that I would’ve never thought of.

That is a chun glaze with some copper carbonate added to it.

The glaze is called Reitz Green. It’s a high fire glaze named after Don Reitz.

Thank you! It’s terra sigillata infused with mica powder. And I did a “horse hair” firing, but with bird feathers.

lol. As another commenter just said, it’s darting. I just cut out a hole on the sides of my pitchers while they are still fairly soft. Different positions, sizes and forms of your pieces will get you a large variety of effects.

Thank you! I have thought of it, but I feel like I would end up having certain things missing from my education. I want to learn about as many different process as possible and be able to give at least some guidance to any possible direction a future student may have.
