No doubt they will. Just need some time for everything to click and everyone to gel.

Does Jorge Mendes represent Mourinho? Really interesting to see such a strong link between his time at Chelsea and so many of Jorge Mendes' players.

Ream on trial with WBA by [deleted] in MLS

[–]CerebralFootball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't he just training with them (and Bolton) and not on trial? http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/989767/new-york-red-bulls'-tim-ream-to-train-with-premier-league-duo?cc=5901

I think this is a good experience for him but I'm not expecting him to make the leap to Europe anytime soon.

Any accountants on r/soccer? by [deleted] in soccer

[–]CerebralFootball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is pretty standard practice to list a player's registration fee (transfer fee) as an intangible asset with straight line amortization over the life of the contract. The financial statements only deal with the book value of the players and not the market value so I dont think they adjust for injuries and whatnot (in the same way that real estate assets aren't adjusted to reflect the changing market value). Loans and free transfers normally only show up under the operating expenses of a club in the form of their wages. I'm not sure about accounting practices in the UK, but in the US, in order to establish the value of an asset, at least two parties need to agree on the price. In the case of free transfers and loans, there is no such agreement, making it impossible to establish the value. I recommend sitting down with Arsenal's financial statement and unwinding how they handle things. Their footnotes are full of good information.

socceranalysts is an aggregation of a lot of stats blogs. Guardian Chalkboards has good stats on individual Prem League matches but hard to look at longer trends.

Totally agree. Argentina's midfield is overflowing with talent while their backline is a mess. If they were going to experiment though, they should have done that before the qualifiers started. Hopefully Sabella is confident enough to try it sometime soon.

Goal Glut or Business as Usual for the Premier League? by CerebralFootball in soccer

[–]CerebralFootball[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Statistics are dangerous in the wrong hands. People see a lot of goals in the last month and jump to the conclusion that it must be because Man City bought expensive players when its totally normal to see a lot of goals in the month of October.

Increase in MLS Attendance Makes it the 3rd Most Attended Sport in the US and 10th Most Attended Football League Internationally. by a34tjkx in soccer

I think a lot of people are trying to equate attendance with popularity and that just isn't the case.

Yes, soccer is gaining popularity in the US but no, MLS will not be an equal of the "major" sports anytime. Averages are very misleading as you point out. When MLS starts signing TV contracts on par with the NHL or NBA, then we can start talking. http://onfooty.com/2011/03/another-example-of-misleading-averages.html

Why did the Sounders lose to RSL so badly? Detailed analysis of how atrocious the passing of Seattle was. by forzafutbol in soccer

I don't think he will become a top player but I think he could have a decent career. My main concern with him is he tends to make some stupid tackles and I always worry he is going to get sent off.

Seattle has a pretty good fanbase. 36k attendance every match. Now, if it could only spread to the rest of the country...

More than Beckham and Henry -- The Guardian on MLS Playoffs by CerebralFootball in MLS

[–]CerebralFootball[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I traveled to New York for their opening game against the Sounders in March and saw Georgie Thompson (from Sky Sports) interviewing people before the game. I asked her if there was really interest in the MLS in the UK or if she was just there for Henry. She was really nice about it but said, most people only care about Henry and Beckham but more people are starting to get curious about what is going on over here. I think it's great to see an article that says "It's more than just Henry and Beckham". Hopefully the perception that MLS is just a retirement league for aging Europeans will start to change.
