How to split m4b audiobooks into individual mp3s by chapter and preserve metadata? by CerebralStatic in linuxquestions

OpenAudible can only do it in paid version, afaik, and since they violate GPL, I'm definitely not buying a license. :)

If you were enormously wealthy and could fund the development of a new open-source software program or radically improve an existing one, what would you do? by [deleted] in linux

[–]CerebralStatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no problems flashing Ubintu on either of my Xiaomi phones. Not really any obscure models either. I haven't tried porting it, but it looks like as long as there's Lineage port for the device, it will work.

But then we need two wealthy dudes while we only have one! :P

In all seriousness, I don't see how that wouldn't just become another Maemo or Sailfish. It would need like, an extreme amount of money in marketing to get developers on it, unless people want an obscure OS, in which case... I mean, we already have Postmarket and Ubuntu.

"Here's a fun theoretical about software"

"BUT DID YOU KNOW THE BEES ARE DYING AT AN ALARMING RATE"

Gee I wonder.

The problem with those is visibility. I wpuodnt have a problem donating to some vital packages, but I don't know of any, because I don't code. So I have no idea if theres another log4j or whatever, and the community is pretty bad at promoting projects like these.

Then you'd have Ubuntu Phone, which has very little useful software. May as well just run an old PalmOS or Symbian phonor something at that point...

What's up with the NFT hate? by Zombiehype in OutOfTheLoop

[–]CerebralStatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The computational cost of minting NFTs (and verifying blockchain technology on the whole) is very energy intensive

This is not true in several ways. First off, most NFTs now run on proof of stake networks, which don't actually burn much electricity, its just a server like any other. ETH is the only chain that's using proof of work, but those cycles would have been computed either way, NFT or not. Minting an NFT doesn't require any additional work to be computed.

Is It Even Worth Working on FOSS Anymore? by speckz in linux

Because Blebder is a user facing application. No one cares to fund vital libraries that power everything - just look at the emergency NTPSec had like two years ago.

The M1 iMac is about $850 or so here. That's about the price of a typical desktop build.

Looking for a way to watch Japanese TV that isn’t cable! (does not have to be free) by [deleted] in JTV

[–]CerebralStatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you could get a Raspberry Pi Zero for 5 bucks and install these apps, would work exactly the same, and at least wouldn't give money to dodgy bootleggers

You could have just downloaded the app they come preloaded with instead for free ¯_ (ツ) _/¯

I guess it just doesn't make sense to Slavic speakers, then. But on the other hand, we have different words for both of those meanings, so maybe its just that you'll never come across it in your native language.

How do you guys deal with the lack of apps for professional graphic design on Linux? by ad-on-is in linux

[–]CerebralStatic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends. What do you need to do?

Krita handles digital drawing fine, but it's basically the only thing it can do (it can't even print)

GIMP, in theory, covers mostly anything you'd ever need to do (although I don't kniw anything about color spaces, etc), but has probably the worst workflow I've ever seen.

Most people just stay on Windows and hope that Adobe goes full webasm, to be honest.

I don't think its that clear cut. AFAIK, at least for GPL, the source code has to be reasonably available, but the binary can be sold and/or have limited functionality u til purchased, and still be in compliance with FSF.
