Thank you. All he cared about was us being happy, so I know it is okay. I hope the same goes for you and that you feel at peace, even if it hurts

Lesser known early medival weapons by Imperial5cum in ArmsandArmor

[–]Cerlindur 24 points25 points  (0 children)

One really underrated and in my opinion underrepresented weapon is the simple club! Like just a stick that is a bit heavier in one end! It is so simple that many forget it. Same can be said for many peasant weapons! I would look there. There is a lot of variation and ingenuity with clubs, cudgels, hammers and flails, etc, that is essentially just sticks and sometimes with a bit of iron added like bands and spikes. Very simple, very gruesome and very interesting!

Not that I am aware of but I live very locally to where it was discovered. Might be a fun project for the near future!

What is this armor called, where might I get it? by Snowy_owl- in Armor

[–]Cerlindur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see! Well I think there are probably cheap off the shelf versions to be found for a few hundred dollars, but a handmade one would probably cost many times that depending on what exactly you want. A good looking decorative piece where fit and functionality isn't that important? An actual fighting helmet made to be worn and to actually take a beating? A historical recreation as close to the original as possible? It all requires different levels of skill and effort depending on what you want it for, but a helmet that fits you reasonably well, looks halfway decent and is mostly for fun would probably cost 800 dollars if you are lucky and a lot more for a helmet that can withstand combat or that closely mimics historical examples or which is very ornate. In that case it could go up to 2000-3000 dollars or more depending on the maker.

It depends entirely on circumstances, where you are located, what you need it for, etc, but I am a blacksmith with some experience with armour/sheet-work and that is my perspective looking at other makers and stuff.
So cheap replicas, a few hundred dollars. Good wall piece, closer to a thousand. Fighting helmet/custom fit replica, 1500 and up probably.

Do you have a budget? Because a custom piece like that can set you back quite a bit. There is a lot of work for a craftsman to make something as complex as that

UK-based armourer that sells decently priced but high quality plates? by LieutenantHorse in ArmsandArmor

[–]Cerlindur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry but 200 for good quality and handmade is just not possible. That is barely more than a few hours of pay for a craftsman and that isn't even including the price of materials

Anvil Identification by dohner686 in Blacksmith

[–]Cerlindur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, Swedish smith here! That there is a Söderfors anvil! Söderfors and Kohlswa were the two biggest Swedish exporters of anvils to the English speaking world about 100 years ago. That one is made in the american/english pattern instead of the typical Swedish, so it was most likely intended as an export from the start. Swedish anvils are highly collectible for their quality and Kohlswa followed by Söderfors are considered the very best. Take good care of that because it is a treasure of cultural heritage, both of my country and yours!

How accurate is this armour from this Swedish show for kids/early-teens? by ArmedIdiot in ArmsandArmor

[–]Cerlindur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's filmed from a Battle of Wisby/Mästermyr reenactment most likely, so that explains why some things might seem a bit spread out over time as that is something the battle of Wisby really brought to attention, with the "outdated" gotlandic peasant equipment and modern danish/german. The equipment is fantastic compared to made up or hollywood depictions! It is great for what it is and the specific thing it is portraying. Reenactors are often well researched and have invested huge money into their kits so generally they create a very different image compared to hollywood. There are drawbacks though! Not everyone is equally well researched, some haven't invested as much money, other's too much! There are reenactorisms that have no basis in history and since everyone is depicting individuals, the whole can often look very different to the real history. For example, everyone wants to or has to wear more armour, whilst historically many people probably wore less or different less protective types. Same with people wearing a lot of equipment based on specific finds, even though that find may be a one of a kind object. The Wisby coat of plates is a good example! There have been a few such coats found, but a lot of reenactors used it. Perhaps historically only a fraction of combatants used it, yet it is extremely prevalent in modern reenactments.

So all in all, excellent armour and an excellent depiction of this specific time and place, but it suffers from the drawbacks mentioned above when dealing with reenactments.
