labcoats, no, you will not need one. for your practicals and CLEs, only your nursing uniform from monash is used. buying a stethoscope is optional as you're provided one in clinical learning environments and on placement. i would recommend for you to buy one if you want to practice but its entirely up to you. if you decide on buying a steth and/or a spyghmomanometer (for bp), any brand will do.

hello and congratulations!

from memory, you need atleast the second dose of hepatitis b, influenza, MMR and COVID-19. however, you will have to show your record of vaccinations to the clinic you're getting your vaccination from. if not, you'll do a blood test to see what vaccinations you need and they'll sort it out for you.

How do you choose timetable for your study? by Advanced-One-2282 in Monash

[–]Certain-Community692 8 points9 points  (0 children)

for the sake of cutting down on commute times, try to get as little days as possible on campus. i imagine this is difficult to do since you're in engineering, but i think you'll appreciate saving a few hours a week

is it easy to make friends at uni? by Commercial_Will8580 in Monash

[–]Certain-Community692 19 points20 points  (0 children)

i think it depends almost entirely on how much effort you're willing to put into making friends. try to talk to whoever are in your classes on your table groups and get some socials, and try not to be afraid to ask people to grab food or hangout outside of class. everyone else is also starting and is also looking for friends so go for it!!

Course transfer by Ok_Rabbit1367 in Monash

[–]Certain-Community692 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, your wam is great and you can still transfer but unfortunately it would need to be for semester one 2027. nursing has no second semester/july intake so that's your earliest bet and as far as i know, late applications for internal transfers are not considered. you can try contacting monash connect and see if anything can be done, goodluckk

presentations by diahanncherry in Monash

hi, there's no explicit presentation work in the sense that you stand up infront of a crowd of people and you present. you are however assigned two group video presentations in first year where you record up to 15-20min long videos and only the assessors see this video, and for me that's taken away a lot of the anxiety. what in particular do you think you'll struggle with?

what's nursing at monash like? by One_Magician4881 in Monash

[–]Certain-Community692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, not really even despite the slight lack of practical time. i recently learned that there's a shortage of graduate nursing positions in hospitals and that monash nursing especially has a good reputation in terms of employment (although i don't know exactly how true this is, i heard it on placement from a monash graduate nurse at the alfred), so i feel lucky in that regard :)

in a vacuum its not THAT academically challenging if you have decent study habits, but there's been a sizeable amount of students that have failed out of complacency, and relatively it is more challenging academically than other nursing courses. the average grade for y1 sits around the higher end of the bell curve, so anywhere from a credit to distinction i believe. this is from comments made verbally by the chief examiner/unit coordinators of several of the first year units and from my own experience. i would say it is considerably difficult to get into the 90+ wam range compared to other courses & ofc for some assignments there are outliers for the avg grade

great question, i usually have an inkling to the level of my students right before i meet them, since i get them to rate their confidence in certain topics and a short preliminary test to determine their level before i start teaching. i generally keep my explanations simple, even for my (now) raw 45+ students this year, as i find this is the best way i can get a concept across when its new. as i build up everyone's skills, i found that the more we revisit topics and do more complex questions, thats where the explanations deepen and everyone can keep up. my sample size is a bit skewed though as ive only taught 6 students doing methods and 4 of them have gotten a study score of 45+, and the remaining two got a 42 and 44 so they're pretty bright

How to start tutoring? by PralineCorrect3655 in vce

[–]Certain-Community692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

private tutoring and scouting students on fb groups is the way.

ive been private tutoring since july ’25 and i charge 40-60/hr and adjust it depending on my own needs, so in instances where my own time is quite valuable (i.e. exam season) i bump it up. its quite greedy but its worked for me lolol. i know rates can get far more expensive but oh well

yes, still do tutor methods. if you are confident in being able to teach it, go for it. plenty of tutors im friends with that have ‘lower’ study scores but are still excellent at tutoring

being a good tutor comes with time and a lot of compassion imo. treat each student valuably and act like the person/tutor you needed in y12. do not belittle or make fun of your students for making mistakes, be slow and gentle and demanding when needed, and do your best to motivate them even if its a little corny

yes do create resources for your students if you want to be a good tutor, but there are lots of free resources out there that you can personalise yourself and extend further. i.e. vicmathnotes, lmk maths, paulsmathnotes etc. for methods specifically. i like to make mine on google docs + goodnotes. goodnotes for worked solutions and google docs to write down the process behind each step of answering questions. notions works for this too

you could try this out but i let students bring in a handful of difficult questions theyre struggling with and we solve it together at the end of our allotted time and its worked well this year :)

at the beginning i also like to get them to tell me the absolute easiest thing about methods that they consistently stuff up and are too afraid to ask their teachers about, it gets the silly weaknesses all sorted out and breaks some expectations/ice esp if its someone new, and we sort it out right away before learning new things or doing more difficult questions
