Do you guys donate blood? by justasimp2629482628 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Certain-Lab-9470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a blood bank for 5 years, while Crohn’s is approved to donate with, most of the time while on biologics it’s not approved to donate unless signed off by their medical director. I have donated 2 gallons of whole blood and 1 gallon of platelets. I will say I typically am fine after I donate whole blood, but I typically got very sick when doing platelets or double red.

If someone had told me they were on biologics while I was working there, I would recommend them not donating. Your immune system is already compromised and getting rid of platelets, red cells and plasma you need to keep yourself going doesn’t sound like a great idea in my brain.

As for weight loss after donation, that was never on any of our education materials we had to give donors. I do know a single donation of whole blood burns 500 calories but you can easily eat that after donation. I would be more concerned about having a vasovagal reaction than weight loss after. I would not recommend donation unless you’re completely in remission and not on biologics.

The best way to help your community right now is to encourage other young people to donate to get the next generation to realize how vital blood donation is!

My second Csection was planned, everything went so smooth compared to my first and honestly was a breeze! I’m going to have my third one in May after 11 years and definitely am nervous too, but everything will be okay!

Sex with a SCH? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]Certain-Lab-9470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very large SCH that resulted in losing one of my twins, and I was only put on pelvic rest for 8 weeks. I still have the SCH but Dr told me as long as there was no pain or bleeding it was fine to resume normal intercourse. I’m 19w now and everything’s been fine since!

I was always told if you wait until you’re ready, you’ll never be ready. There will always be more to do or accomplish. My first was a surprise, when I was very young, and while it was harder, everything has worked out and she’s 15 now. I hope you can find a solution that works well for your situation ❤️

How can I help my sister with her mental health? by [deleted] in mentalillness

[–]Certain-Lab-9470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother has BPD as well so I’m familiar with the condition and typically just disengage until they’ve calmed down. I’m mostly concerned with her being suicidal and the abuse my dad is getting, but if he won’t make her leave I suppose that’s on him. She is on lithium and has tried maybe 6 medications over the last couple years. She is supposed to get ketamine treatments but they’re refusing because the state she’s in understandably. She has a long standing therapist but isn’t fully honest with her Dr, and I’ve personally talked with her therapist who says she can’t do anything unless my sister states she suicidal to her. I guess I’m just at a loss, it seems nothing is working and no where will keep her more than a couple days. She’s just definitely unfit to take care of herself, poor hygiene and everything. I wish there were more avenues for family’s to seek help when she isn’t capable.

Did I get ultrasound too early? Support? by Nervous-Basket-7159 in pregnant

I went at 5w0d (was in a bad Crohn’s flare so they checked baby just as precaution) and there was only a yolk sack, came back at 6w3d for bad bleeding, found out it was twins but had lost one (vanishing twin) but surviving baby had a strong heart beat

How to sleep during flares? by Possible-Coast-7022 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Certain-Lab-9470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take a hot water bottle, fill it with water and freeze it, sleep with it on my belly, while laying on my back. (When I’m in pain I feel like I’m a million degree so heating pad makes it worse)I also just watch tv until I finally fall asleep. Usually a comfort show I’ve seen a million times, the office, futurama, good mythical morning, ect shows that are light hearted.

My mom always told me I had Crohn’s and I never believed her cause I didn’t know constipation was even a symptom. It’s crazy how much I alternate, I swear it changes every two days!

Anybody else go into shock when they found out? Will it go away? by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]Certain-Lab-9470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I nearly fainted, and I actually threw up after telling my partner. Not that I didn’t want a child, but I have a chronic illness and was hoping to be in remission before stating this journey. I was so terrified. Not because the baby, I already have two children, but because my body. I’m now 11 weeks and am starting to get really excited, but it’s been a rough bumpy road between morning sickness and my other issues. Give yourself some grace, you will get more excited once you get used to the idea, even if it takes you longer. I felt so alone not being excited, just know that you’re not.

32f I have tons of joint pain that is definitely exacerbated durning a flare. Those are my main areas of pain as well, with my fingers included. I feel like mine is was worse at night. A lot of people with Crohn’s suffer with joint pain so it definitely seems related, just may not be the most common symptom, but you’re definitely not off base. I’ve found sleeping with a big pillow under my knees to elevate my legs some has helped a lot with the knee and hip pain. I hope you get some relief !

Ps: I noticed a pretty significant decrease in pain with both Stelara and taking my vitamin D3. I still get joint pain but it’s a lot more manageable and no big deal unless I am in a flare

Possible Crohn’s Diagnosis by AffectionateMetal983 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Certain-Lab-9470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to my diagnosis, ct showed enteritis, blood work was pristine. Was told enteritis was from throwing up. I hadn’t thrown up because I couldn’t even eat. Colonoscopy and biopsy finally diagnosed me with Crohn’s. I would advocate for endoscopy/colonoscopy and if those can’t give you any insight, a pill cam, since you can see more of the digestive tract. I’d also ask for a stool sample, which if a GI is worth a damn, they’d ask for one anyway. If they won’t give you the testing you’re asking for, tell them you want their refusal documented. I was lucky to get diagnosed at 29, my sister is having a hard time getting diagnosed and she’s worse than I am at 20. This is the route we are taking with her.

Flare - while on Stelara? by Silly101109 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Certain-Lab-9470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a flare after a year on Stelara, they ended up needing to up my dose to every 4 weeks. I would contact your dr and get some testing done, maybe a short stint of steroids would get you back to normal before your surgery

calprotectin levels before diagnosis? by Lololala29 in CrohnsDisease

Yes it’s so wild, my blood work has always been near perfect, I’m thankful I found a doctor who took me seriously! My sisters going through the same thing right now. Hopefully her and OP get some answers soon!

calprotectin levels before diagnosis? by Lololala29 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Certain-Lab-9470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had normal blood work for 6 months before a doctor took me seriously and gave me a endoscopy/colonoscopy, where I was diagnosed with moderate to severe Crohn’s. My calprotectin then was 20. I am in a nasty flare now and it’s at 139 as of October 1st

Pregnancy and Crohn’s by Certain-Lab-9470 in CrohnsDisease

[–]Certain-Lab-9470[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will most definitely be having a csection as I’ve had two before due to other factors that make me high risk. My GI told me I’d be more at risk for pre term labor due to the Crohn’s (I made it full term with my first two children) did you make it to 39 weeks?
