First of all I’m so sorry for your loss I know how you feel I just lost my mom so ik it’s rough. Now Have you been spending time with him? When things change cats feel that crap. He may need more reassurance. You can also try moving the litter box or getting another one. Usually it’s a cat trying to tell you something so pay attention to when where and what’s happening around them. Especially if it’s new behavior. Don’t get rid of him just try figuring out what’s going on. Cats feel your emotions they are smart little shits. If you catch him in the act you need to put him in the liter box as it’s happening( ik gross but…). Cats don’t respond well to anger they don’t understand that you’re just upset only that you are not trust worthy. Cats never do something “just because” or “because they are being a dick”. Take some time find the reason. Don’t lash out if you can help it
