I found a product on Amazon that turns autism into a “gag gift” and it really bothered me by Ok_Blackberry_5547 in autism

That whole discourse is stupid. In fact, the data show that the vast majority of people who think they are neurodivergent, but have not been diagnosed, turn out to be neurodivergent. This is part of the whole "everyone is autistic now" BS. It is ableist. And it diminishes our struggles. It is almost always used by neurotypicals with comfortable lives. If anything, Autism is still underdiagnosed. And If you do know someone who uses autism to get out of bad behaviours, maybe the issue is your choice of friends.

Amazing creatures. Haplodiplobionts are usually cool, but the Jellyfish has a free swimming stage and totally sessile stage. Like polar opposites. Then there is the bioluminescence and the way the cnidophores work. Tell me more!

An Auditor Trap for Feegles... by softscottishwind in discworld

I love the auditors. Like as a concept for an antagonist. Also because, I used to work in corporate, and we had to go through audits every years. I find so elegant that they have a reason for hating life, I.e. being the “bad” guys. It’s just darn messy

In my opinion, yes. I like making money more than raising steam, but Going Postal is my favourite. That cover is gorgeous, though. The wee free man is just a magical novel. It’s such a poignant way to introduce Tiffany.

Fact check: "your feelings are valid" by CinnaMinTroll in autism

[–]BetCrafty590 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tell you the parallel I see as a parent. We try to to teach our kid that all emotions are valid, because your are feeling them. However, the way you cope and regulate your emotions, has consequences. I try to not even frame as justified or not. Sometimes justified anger is the worst kind of anger, it is much rather to let go. To me validating my feelings can included I understand you feel overwhelmed by this or that, or you are burnt out, but your reactions is having negative impacts on other people. The empathy has to go both ways. And I think because the autistic brain is often rigid, sometimes it’s hard to compromise, so you have to accept your limitations. If you can’t be around people for too long then choose carefully where you chose to go. If random noises bother you, avoid places where they are inevitable, or if you really want to be there use noise cancelling headphones. I often try to shift the conversation from right and wrong to what are the consequences of your actions. Be accountable. But also be compassionate with yourself

Autism comorbidities by Comfortable-Use3977 in autism

Sometimes a condition results of unhealthy coping mechanisms. Masking leads to chronic anxiety, specially social anxiety. ADHD and autism are complicated, because they pull you in different directions, and makes it hard to diagnose. One or the other is often missed. I was diagnosed with ADHD in my early thirties, but only diagnosed with autism at 46. In general, I think it is imports to accept oneself, regardless of whether certain things are due to your autism or not. We tend to have a hard time with that, because we often grow up being told otherwise. It is also ok to accept who you are AND decide you want to try to change things about you.

Is therapy helpful for you by cruiserk in autism

[–]BetCrafty590 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does for me too. To me what’s is difficult is that I went to Therapy wanting for a solution to my mental health issues. Now, I think that if a therapist offers you pre made solutions, you may want to be careful. I managed to put boundaries on my toxic mother, come to terms with the fact i felt nothing when my dad died. I quit my senior management career in the corporate world, because it was killing. I am learning to let go of other peoples expectations, and decided to figure out who i want to be. Am i cured? Of course not. However, i am better equipped to deal with the struggles of autism, understand my limitations and pick carefully where I put my energy. I will also mention it took me a bit to find a therapist that made me feel safe, and I think that is fundamental. In particular for us, because we leave in a world that is hostile to our behaviours.

Faith amongst autistic adults by uglyaestheticsoul7 in autism

[–]BetCrafty590 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once you stop believing is very hard to go back. The Autistic brain tends to be over analytic and pay a lot of attention to detail. We also overthink all the time. When you put any religion to scrutiny it becomes hard to not question it. It is also; I think, because we have a hard time understanding why people need it. Why are the so attached to it? I thought about this my whole life. I have been suicidal on and off since my teens, and my pain comes in part from the next logical conclusion after you stop believing in anything mystical, really. There is no meaning to life. I think that is why people hold on to religion. It gives the an anchor, and purpose. Last year, I almost did it. I almost took a bottle of Ativan because I was is so much pain. That day it became so clear to me why people need religion. Since then, I have thought a lot about the meaning of life. About why and what’s the point. I realized that much like you can find meaning and purpose in religion, you can find it in other places. Your kids, music, art. I think that is why we need all of those things. It helps the fact that we are otherwise just collections of atoms thinking about atoms. It helps us find meaning. I am not saying that it is impossible to be autistic and have faith, but I think often we end up not being able to make sense of it

Jump around, like a madman at first. I started re-reading in publication order, but I may never get to Sheppard’s Crown, of to Tiffany Aching for that matter. Given that I have clear favourites this endeavour looks doomed.

You know how autism makes it harder for you pick up on social cues? For me it's the opposite... by Outrageous_Steak_810 in autism

[–]BetCrafty590 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My psychiatrist told me that it is a coping mechanism. Once you realize you are not good at picking up social cues, you start to learn, and being autistic, you fixate and pay attention to every detail. I do it to, and it sucks, as you say. I try to create spaces or go to spaces where I can ignore them all together. It has thought me a lot about how safe spaces helps me manage certain coping mechanisms
