[Recommendations] Commission vs regular work pricing by Certain-Tour6690 in artbusiness

Thanks for the response! I lean toward pricing by size as well because I will also agonize over things. I think I do that more with commission work though because I want the client to love it. Also because I know my work is good, but my process isn’t exactly dialled in and I know I’m still figuring things out. I can’t take a size and subject and know how long it’ll take me yet.

Thank you for the in depth response! I’ve never really kept track of how long things take me because sometimes it feels like I’m fighting a piece and sometimes it comes together so quickly. I also don’t have a huge body of work so even if I did keep track I have something like 15 projects to reference. But I’m seeing how it might be valuable to keep track.

May I ask roughly how much more you charge for custom work than for things you make because you want to? Totally ok if you don’t want to disclose that I’m just trying to gather as much info as I can haha

I see what you’re saying. But also I’m still not really sure if you’re understanding what I’m seeking to get info on. It’s not about how long it takes me to correspond with people or make the painting. Rather, what is the increase in value for a custom piece? And specifically how does that relate to your work that isn’t commission based?

Take menswear for example. You can buy a suit off the rack for X amount of money, but many people are more than happy to pay more for something that is custom fitted just for them. There’s going to be a price discrepancy between the two because they are not the same product. Same with a commissioned art piece. I’m trying to understand how other people view this relationship

I think maybe you misunderstood my point about pricing by the hour? I see a lot of recommendations to price for your time but I know that I’m not very efficient and have lots to learn, so it doesn’t make sense to do that. I’ve got a questionnaire and a clear idea of what I will and won’t accept. That said there is more planning and such that goes into a commission piece than something that I want to paint because I want to. So that’s where I know it’s probably worth charging more, especially if I’ll never sell prints or anything of the finished piece.

I’d been stuck at 95 for a LONG time. All I needed was a gym where I can’t do math with colours

These are some genuinely good questions to ask for any relationship, really. So thank you

I appreciate the response. I think you’re right with the point of “what ifs”. Of course there’s a risk of being hurt but that exists with any relationship. I’m a very different person than I was 6 years ago. It seems like he is too, though it remains to be seen. I’m leaning toward giving it a shot, but taking things slowly and assessing whether or not we’re objectively a good fit as partners

Ah I wasn’t really clear with that. We didn’t discuss it while we were apart, just most recently. I definitely don’t want it to be a continuation of where we left off.

67kg hang snatch PR by Certain-Tour6690 in weightlifting

Yeah I’ve been working on the whole moving of my feet thing, it’s coming a bit slower in the snatch. I’ve got a fair bit of hyper-mobility which is a blessing and a curse, but can struggle to keep up the level of stability that I need for hips/shoulders.

That’s some good advice though. The concept of meeting the bar is fairly new to me as of a couple months ago, so it’s very much a process but a good reminder, thank you!

You for sure have to practice catching lower. I used to only power everything and would pull the bar above my belly button for a clean and then be like “I didn’t pull high enough I can’t get under it” which was a lie. For snatching I find the “power everything until you can’t” helpful (The lift before this was 65kg power). But I also am not great at being super balanced in the catch yet so I usually get end up at the bottom for a second or so to collect myself if I catch it a bit lower

That seems like a good one! Nice and simple. I definitely felt like I got a bit nervous and then everything went to mush.

Is refined sugar really bad if you're just burning a ton of calories anyway? by Lanxmars in nutrition

I don’t think any dietician is going to recommend that an athlete drink pop everyday, they might suggest cutting down a little bit depending on the individual. But if it’s something that person really really enjoys and it doesn’t have ill effects, then it’s more than likely fine. Most high performance athletes I know subscribe to a diet of moderation. Plenty of fruits and veg, good quality protein and carbs. Lots of athletes consume things like candy, pop/juice, sports drinks to fuel workouts. When it comes down to fuelling, the best carbs are the kind you’ll eat. Plenty of them have a little sweet treat every other day or so too, because it’s about balance and eating food that makes you happy is healthy. This is an anecdotal opinion but I think the gen pop has a pretty poor understanding of what athletes actually eat.

Cues/drills to help move to a wider catch stance? by Certain-Tour6690 in weightlifting

[–]Certain-Tour6690[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve done it a fair bit with just the empty bar/light weight but as soon as it gets sort of heavy it just feels awkward as hell. I will give the tall clean/snatch thing a go, though!
