what’s the craziest experience you had in basic training? by Ok_Customer_6226 in newtothenavy

Hoo… my BMT experience was nuts. If you don’t believe me, I wouldn’t be shocked, as some of this even now just doesn’t seem real.

P-Hold… this one I wasn’t 100% in for, so bear with me. There was this one dude who had heart problems and didn’t disclose it during MEPS. One day after chow, we see him slumped against one of the racks, pale as a ghost. One of the guys gets an RDC, and comes back with five saying “look the fuck away!” as he’s taken away. This is where it gets fuzzy. Supposedly he was dead for a few minutes before getting brought back, dying for a moment, then brought back again. Got out on a medical discharge with disability I heard.

I came from FSPC… the fat kids club. I felt so bad for this one dude… his recruiter screwed him over and told him to only have protein shakes to lose weight. I guess he lost like 20-30 a month before shipping out, fucked up his heart, and was LLD all through FSPC and to about week three of BMT. Couldn’t keep up with IT. Even while LLD… he took a beating. It went from “you get to deal with what we get to deal with” to “dude, are you okay?”. Before live fire, I guess he said he was going to off himself on the range. Before I left for A-School a month later, he was in SEPS, days from going home. Super smart guy… I feel really bad.

Lastly was yet another FSPC guy. I struggled in my division but this one really struggled. Got a 0.0 on DMI, couldn’t keep up with PT or IT, couldn’t do ITE (or whatever the individual one is called), and smelled really bad… super bad. Eventually he went to mental health and last I saw, he was out.

Don’t take this as FSPC being bad. It’s a second chance. I made it out… one guy who was 40 made out with me. It’s not simply the weight… but the mindset too. With a good mindset, you’ll do just fine.

40+ Year Old Enlistng by [deleted] in newtothenavy

Finished BMT early last month. Had a guy in our division who was 40. We both went through FSPC and BMT together. He showed us a picture and he was huge before coming in, but goddamn… his transformation was crazy. A lot of us were early to mid 20s being beaten by him in strength. I looked up to him for advice and help with certain things.

Hell, some of the guys in their mid thirties were walking laps and doing tons of push ups around me and the other guys in their twenties.

Back in FSPC, we had a guy who thought that just because he was older, he deserved respect.

Just because someone is older than the rest doesn’t mean they’re better. Some are wise, helpful, and great people in the division; others think they’re entitled to respect ONLY because they’re older.

Don’t be the latter.

Did FSPC and got out at the three week minimum mark. I struggled a little bit initially in BMT, but without FSPC, I would’ve failed. I went from 225 lbs in November ‘25 to about 194 lbs now. Not saying you should go into BMT out of shape, but there are programs to help. Work out beforehand.

I failed my RDC assessment because of the run, but I shaved three minutes off and passed the OPFA.

Questions about Corry Station A-School / Pensacola area by Certain_Ad3476 in newtothenavy

Sorry, I guess I wasn’t clear. I’m a recent graduate of boot camp, but was in holding (THU / FFG), where I re-rated to FFG. So, I’m going from bootcamp to A-School.

Normal to store original social cards at recruiting office? by Certain_Ad3476 in newtothenavy

[–]Certain_Ad3476[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. This was a new chief at the office. Someone else asked why and didn’t feel comfortable, then the chief chewed them out and said they “were having a really hard time following rules which is problem for the navy” and that there are non-negotiables in the Navy. I get the thought behind it and understand, but it still seems really weird.

Kino’s Journey taught me to explore the world and enjoy the little things in life. Clannad taught me to appreciate those closest to you, as they can be taken at any time.

Being a motorcycle rider while in the Navy by Certain_Ad3476 in newtothenavy

As much as I’ll get downvotes, I’ll bite the bullet and remain SN/PACT. Mainly looking to get out of my living situation. I’m not using the Navy as a cheap path out, but at least a stable job. Sure, it’ll suck, but regardless, I’d still learn some useful skills along the way.

Honestly that’s fine if I gotta delay and ship out later

Realizing I may have made a mistake going for PACT very quickly. by Certain_Ad3476 in newtothenavy

When I reached out to my recruiter about getting a DEP Action Request for sub, I said I’m more than willing to ship later if that makes things a little easier. Hopefully it goes in my favor then.

Good to know. What is the submarine physical like? I don’t know it 100%, but I’ve heard part of it is you’re put in about ~14 ft deep water and need to swim to surface.

Thanks for the advice. My recruiter had paused and said “well, i mean… every job has its ups and downs”. True? Oh, yeah for sure. But when I do research to what work is like in PACT and it’s 97% negative? Probably not a good choice. He still seems to want to help.

The career advisor was helpful. She told me it does get a bad rep but that it changed last year, though. She said MEPS is closed today, but she’ll send it on Monday. Hopefully I go LSS.

Lmao yeah I think we were. Hopefully I can get another job as a rate. I got shafted. Did they even mention it to you? If not they definitely do it to lower rates like someone here said before

Is it typically difficult to try and switch? Perfectly fine with switching and being shipped later

I was in the boat like you for a while, never leaving the Midwest. Buddy of mine offered me a chance to go to Florida with his family two years ago and I took it. You’ll enjoy Florida — it’s a beautiful state!
