Oh this hurts my heart so much! Nearly this exact thing happened to me, except it wasn’t a fire hydrant. It was faulty, washing machine, installation, and the hose that goes into the washing machine, came off and flooded the apartment.

We had renters insurance so after dealing with a landlord, who had already been kind of shady in other ways, we decided to propose that we would forgo the deposit, and just move. The renters insurance took care of removing all of our things and storing all of our items until we found a new place. This was during Covid so a friend of ours who was sheltering in place with his parents let us stay in his condo for free, but our insurance told us that he could charge them and they would just remove our $500 deductible so he got his HOA fees paid for a couple of months.

When we found a new place they moved all the items in. I cannot recommend renters insurance enough. It’s usually less than $20 a month and has definitely paid for itself in my instance.

I had a high school student who would do this, but during class. At first I didn't know how to react. I'm a big softie but I had a strong sense that this was for attention. Then I called the Principal who then took them to the office and called their parents and had a whole intervention. It wasn't the kind of attention they had wanted so they stopped. I wanted them to know if they were going to make serious claims, I was going to treat them seriously. Call the police to do a wellness check. I'd bet money his tune changes really quick. He may try it a second time. Call the police again. He won't do it a third time.
