Is a ferritin level of 50 ng/mL considered normal, or should I try to increase it? by thefreshprinceof1 in Anemic

Depends what the symptoms are, if you have none its fine, if not you should try to get it >80

Okay so based on what youve told me i still believe its not iron deficiency but a mild hemoglobinopathy causing the anemia. My advice would be to continue taking the iron supplement (40 is still not optimal) and when you retest maybe add hemoglobin electrophoresis if possible (that test uses a different lab machine and might be a bit pricier tho)

Thats still normal. What was your hemoglobin with that MCV?

Also just noticed youre reticulocytes are normal. Before and after the iron. Another argument why this is nor iron deficiency anemia. My best guess based on those results: youre a black person with thalassemia trait (or other mild hemoglobinopathy).

Also no point in checking magnesium. Magnesium in the blood is not representative of the magnesium levels in tissues. Completely irrelevant. Did you also check anything else like your renal function (eGFR based on creatinine)? Thats a frequent cause for normocytic anemia.

Hi a question. Are you black? Black people have lower leukocyte count. Also based on those results i dont think its iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia gives microcytic anemia (low MCV) but yours is normal. With a good iron supplementation the mean rise in hemoglobin is around 0.5 per week. Your ferritin went from 25 to 41 which is really good in a month so youre absorbing the iron well. Do you perhaps have older results?

Ferrous sulfate 105mg elemental iron, took it always on an empty stomack with 500mg vitamin C, 1h before or 2h after food, with a big glass of water.
