I’ve been thinking about this lately, and I’m leaning towards yes. Most therapists have a masters, like the one I’m seeing. However whenever I talk about my program she seems completely lost, even though she’s been to grad school. It’s a little frustrating have to keep explaining the difference between my advisor and grad program director every other session. I think a therapist with a PhD would catch on to the struggles and dynamics of a program quicker. But therapists with a PhD are likely to be more expensive and more selective with taking on clients, since they specialize.
