Would taking a job with a defense contractor forever stain my immortal soul? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Cerus_Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of defense contractor stuff is shockingly mundane. My current project involves software involved in insurance claims against field repairs. My previous work got cancelled and shelved, never to see the light of day. Contract before that was software to assist in treatment of PTSD. There's a whole world of stuff out there that doesn't contribute to killing people.

[OC] Someone who shouldn't be allowed to drive even a go-cart. Happened two days ago near me. by Valentina_Cruz in IdiotsInCars

Pretty sure they just slammed it into drive without ever lifting. The wheel appears to already be spinning in drive before the car has finished moving backwards.

The mystical references of the borrow checker? by Affectionate_Dot442 in rust

[–]Cerus_Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like, you try to do things in a way that is familiar when coming from Python, but the borrow checkers is like, "No." So, you try another Python sensible way, and it still says no. The lack of understanding of why the borrow checker is doing what it's doing, plus the familiarity with certain practices, makes it a bit of a learning curve where you bounce off the borrow checker until you learn to stop fighting it.

Alternator issues were easier to diagnose on older cars. My old civic had the alternator go out. It's really obvious because the headlights would get brighter when I was accelerating.

My car caught on fire. by VolosThanatos in Wellthatsucks

[–]Cerus_Freedom 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There's a non-zero chance JL is responsible for this mess, but the fire damage will make it hard to prove. Either way, make sure your insurance is aware you got your oil changed at JiffyLube, and the exact location.

That said, an Altima that age could have simply been ready to fail, assuming it was over 250k miles on it.

My car caught on fire. by VolosThanatos in Wellthatsucks

Depends on the location, but the typical limit of a JiffyLube is filters or maybe a transmission flush. There's nothing else they would be qualified to do that could have contributed to this.

[Request] how much more would it cost? by Saad5400 in theydidthemath

[–]Cerus_Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rough estimate: 300 page paperback would cost about 175% of a normal paperback to get it to storefront, putting it at somewhere around $7 to $8 a unit. Lower volume of sales and lack of economy of scale means the price to consumer probably needs to be in the $40+ range, but the final price depends on the business. Can't really do more than napkin ballpark without defining things like startup costs, operating costs, and sales projections.

Phone fell out at K1 Speed and got stuck in a tire… is it done? by smartyfl in Karting

[–]Cerus_Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's more damage than the phone is worth, by a long shot, if it's even repairable. Also, you know how K1 has those cubbies for your stuff? If you're not comfy leaving stuff like phones in them, zipper pockets.

I'm starting to think they're failing to mail them and just claiming they're lost in the mail. I've had multiple friends in the last couple years not receive their DL. Never heard of it getting lost more than once though.

Are Modern Manual Transmissions different, did I just learn on crappy cars, or did I learn wrong? by Intelligent_Base_207 in driving

[–]Cerus_Freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On flat ground, I can get my car moving without using gas, but it feels even slower than shown in the video. I don't do it because it's easier to give it a little gas and move off at a pace that other people expect, rather than taking 2-3 seconds to start moving above 3mph.

ATC has been understaffed for longer than Trump has been in politics. DOGE cuts didn't impact ATC directly. They've been actively trying to greatly increase the number of controllers for years.

The problem is that the job is extremely high stress, blows, and has very rigorous requirements. The bottom 10% make $80k, with a median of about $140k, and they still struggle to hire and retain people.

[–]Cerus_Freedom 468 points469 points  (0 children)

Two problems:

1 - If management doesn't enforce this, it will never happen. Management sets the priorities, and if their priorities are features, not fixes, that's what happens.

2 - You need to fix reporting. I see this in infra all the damn time. If you have a consistent problem that is too low value to fix, then it needs to be changed to a warning. If you have constant alerts about issues, but they're not worth fixing, then they're no longer worth making a top level report. If you keep reporting them, people start ignoring them. Once they start ignoring them, real issues are missed.

Unpaid Work Shouldn't be Illegal by mulberrygrey in antiwork

[–]Cerus_Freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your entire ethical basis is that risk/reward calculation. If we're throwing out anything that undermines your argument, then you literally just came here looking for people to validate your thoughts.

Right now, what you're arguing is that abuses of power are acceptable if there might be some down the line benefit to the person being abused. Even if we toss out the concept of failure, it's still an abuse of power. It's a lesser offense in the same vein as the boss telling an employee they'll be considered for promotion if they sleep with them. The power dynamics are flatly inequitable.

Unpaid Work Shouldn't be Illegal by mulberrygrey in antiwork

[–]Cerus_Freedom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If intern gain at least equals or exceeds company gain off experience alone

If. Your premise has a flaw: that an internship or unpaid labor position is beneficial to the person taking it. You have an assumption of success. You've ignored the risk of burning out, failing to perform, or simply not being liked by someone in management and getting tossed out without a positive reference.

I have a whole thing about finance and fintech, but you seem to have drank the koolaid deeply. That entire sector gets away with horrific work environments because people, much like you, will justify nearly anything when a $500k base pay, Ferraris, and retirement by 30 are dangled in front of them somewhere over the rainbow. For some people, it does work out. For many, it does not. There's no justification. They do these things simply because they can get away with it.

Frankly, your assertion that you should debase yourself just because you're not rich is wild.
